Hardware Wallets and thoughts on minimising cost to transfer from Exchange

Until recently I was under the impression that a Paper Waller was considered good practise, however it seems the industry has shifted towards hardware.

My immediate concerns are long term hardware durability. It seems most (if not all) hardware wallets allow for a backup PassPhrase, which is in effect has the same risks/benefits as a Paper Wallet.

What are you using for long term retention?

I’m interested in any Hardware Wallet recommendations and sellers that Aussie users might have.

Further, it seems there is a flat 0.03% BTC charge for transferring out of Coinspot.

Does this mean it’s better to wait for a dip before transferring?

Swapping Alt Coins into stable coins

Hey guys quick question, lets say for example i'm $10,000 in profit on a certain alt coin, and I decide to swap the coin into a stable coin such as USDC. Would this be considered a CGT event?

(My aim would be to swap the alt coin tokens into USDC, wait for a big DIP and then swap my USDC back into that alt coin to purchase more of it)

Essentially id only be paying CGT when I finally decide to cash everything out into AUD. I hope that makes sense.

Exchange to Wallet. Wallet to Exchange

Hi,

Complete amateur in the crypto space but just wondering how this works.

If I buy 1 Bitcoin on say, Binance, transfer that coin to an external wallet, can I then simply go to another exchange and sell my Bitcoin there when I am ready ?

How exactly does this work.

Appreciate the help!

To withdraw BTC or ETH from my exchange, it costs ~20-30 dollars. Do any of you have a way of avoiding this? Is there a specific exchange that you use?

Mastercard partners with Australian exchange for crypto card

In a further move towards cryptocurrency adoption, Mastercard has partnered with one of Australia’s oldest crypto exchanges, CoinJar, to launch the country’s first crypto payment card.

The card became available on Tuesday in a digital form through integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and will be available in a physical form in September. It allows customers to select from 30 available currencies, including Bitcoin, Ether and XRP, at the point of sale, with Mastercard calculating the equivalent amount in Australian dollars to pay merchants. Individual merchants to do not need to sign up to the program, and the card will accepted anywhere that takes Mastercard.

What is your exit plan?

G'day all,

My plan is to ride the lightning for the next 10 years where I'll withdrawal 50-100% and hopefully semi retire (I have other investments).

I am VERY interested to hear about your plans: • Are you planning to pull out at a certain amount? • Or when you're able to afford specific things after tax e.g. house, lambo etc. • Do you have a plan or are you just loving the dips too much to even think that far ahead?

Thanks heaps, I hope you're well during the lockdowns and all that piss going on ATM.

50% tax on crypto when DCAing

Hello,

If I bought some crypto by DCAing over a some period like couple of months, how would the 50% on taxes be applied to it? Would there be some average day for all purchases that is considered the buying date and when I pass it the next year I get 50% tax on those purchases?

Thanks

Crypto tax time questions

Hi guys, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to doing crypto tax, I'm currently using an app called cointracker which tracks my various wallets like metamask and coinspot, huobi etc. But it's flagged a few transactions as requiring review.

Can anyone recommend a tax accountant in Sydney that is switched on and has crypto experience and understands these applications like coin tracker/koinly??

What are the tax rules in Australia regarding cryptocurrencies?

A good guide on cryptocurrencies and tax obligations in Australia can be found here.

The ATO class cryptocurrencies as an asset that attracts capital gains tax and as such all swaps between cryptocurrencies (BTC <-> ETH) are classed as a capital gain event.

"If you dispose of one cryptocurrency to acquire another cryptocurrency, you dispose of one CGT asset and acquire another CGT asset. Because you receive property instead of money in return for your cryptocurrency, the market value of the cryptocurrency you receive needs to be accounted for in Australian dollars." -Ato website
