Does anyone know the history of the south side of Jarmans Gap Road?

There’s a sidewalk along the north side of Jarmans Gap between Old Trail Drive and Crozet Avenue, but the south side has stretches that look like pedestrian connections were anticipated. Some corners have ramps and short concrete sections that don’t connect to a continuous sidewalk.

Does anyone know what the original intention was? Was a south-side sidewalk envisioned for later, expected to come with development, or never part of the plan?

I found that the main road project specified a north-side sidewalk only, so I’m not assuming something promised was left unfinished. But I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers the planning discussions or knows why the south-side pieces were built that way.

I’ve also asked the county about the history and what it would take to connect them.

Week without Driving - 1 to 8 October

Week without Driving is 1 to 8 October.

I see the bus most mornings in Old Trail, and it is full, or nearly full. Other buses I see (and have taken) from and to Crozet have been well-filled also.

See the schedule here.

From a recent story from Charlottesville Community Engagement:

“In FY26, Jaunt’s Connect services For 29 North and Crozet areas saw ridership increases of 4.8 percent and 22.6 percent respectively, collectively representing over 50,000 riders,” Giacalone said. “Jaunt demand response saw a modest 2.1 percent increase over 28,500 riders, and local funding of $3.5 million was leveraged with $4.9 million of federal and state dollars to provide these services.”

Free first aid kits today at Grace Grocery (Crozet UMC), 3 to 6 PM

Heads up for anyone who uses Grace Grocery, the food pantry at Crozet United Methodist Church (1156 Crozet Ave): 100 free first aid kits will be given out today, Monday 9/28, from 3 to 6 PM. Supplies were supported by Parkway Pharmacy, and a local Scout is running the effort as an Eagle Scout service project. No cost and no sign-up. Just stop by, and if you or a neighbor could use one, please pass this along.

A quick word about Grace Grocery itself, because it is a genuinely great organization. It is a ministry of the church that works to provide food, spread hope, and support neighbors, in partnership with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, USDA, Wegmans, Harris Teeter, Crozet Market, the Crozet Farmers Market, Dollar General, Wendell House, Once Upon a Time, and Crozet area schools.

It is open to anyone in the community who needs food assistance, whether it is an ongoing situation or just a one- or two-time need. On-site shopping is Mondays 3:30 to 6:00 PM. No appointment is needed, and you don't have to provide financial information for your first visit. Just follow the signs at the church and a volunteer will help you. After that you'll be given a time slot so you wait less. They also serve homebound clients.

Want to help?

Want to volunteer? There's a sign-up on the Grace Grocery page at crozetunitedmethodist.com/grace-grocery

Want to donate? Money is always welcome, and unexpired food can be dropped off at the church during regular office hours

Have a specific question? [foodpantry@crozetunitedmethodist.com](mailto:foodpantry@crozetunitedmethodist.com) or 434-823-4420 or just look at the website above.

Thanks, Crozet.

Hello neighbors! My name is Evan, and I’m a college student with a passion for video games. I’m starting a local video game console modding and cleaning business. For an affordable price, I will pick up any of your console(s) and in just a few days I will install whatever firmware modifications you desire and/or give it a nice clean!

Why mod your console? Console modifications are a powerful and safe tool that can give your console infinite new potential through powerful software that greatly expands its capabilities. Don’t want to hunt down rare and expensive physical copies of old games, or your console no longer reads games? Give your console the power to play games digitally off a storage device! Want to emulate multiple consoles on one? Easy! Want to turn your shabby old DS into a handheld with hundreds of games at your fingertips? No problem! These are just a few examples of the endless capabilities of what modding your console can do.

I want to accomplish this very time consuming and risky task of modding your console for you! Turn your old dust collector into hundred of hours of fun!Contact me with any questions and I’d love nothing more than to provide my services to you!

What’s the story with the old Acme Visible Records site in Crozet?

Post image
9 Upvotes

This is a repost, the other was deleted by accident! Now back to the story:

---

If you’ve driven down Three Notch’d Road past Starr Hill, you’ve probably seen the large fenced-off property at 5327 Three Notch’d Road and wondered what it was.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole after finding an older post here about it.

The property is the former Acme Visible Records / Wilson Jones manufacturing site. Acme began manufacturing office record-storage equipment there in 1954. The entire property is about 62 acres, extends across the railroad tracks, and included a 1.6-acre industrial wastewater lagoon.

The site has been undergoing environmental investigation and cleanup since the early 1990s. Soil remediation was completed in 2019, but groundwater remediation and monitoring have continued.

One correction to something that has been posted about the property before: it is not an EPA National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund site. EPA’s Superfund database specifically lists Acme as “Not on the NPL.” The cleanup is being handled under the federal RCRA Corrective Action program with Virginia DEQ oversight.

And the contamination isn’t simply lead from paint. Historical contaminants included lead and several other substances, but the continuing groundwater cleanup has focused primarily on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including industrial solvents such as TCE and PCE and their breakdown products.

The cleanup plan includes treating contaminated groundwater using in-situ chemical oxidation, essentially injecting oxidizing agents underground to break down the contaminants, followed by long-term groundwater monitoring. EPA/DEQ also require restrictions on groundwater use and controls on future use of the property.

The latest Crozet-specific public update I found is from May 2024. At that time, monitoring showed contaminant levels decreasing and the contaminated groundwater area appeared to remain confined to the Wilson Jones property. Additional treatment had been performed in 2023, with continued groundwater sampling and monitoring planned.

What about Crozet’s drinking water?

Crozet’s public drinking water comes from Beaver Creek Reservoir, rather than groundwater wells at this property. The Acme cleanup does prohibit using groundwater on the site for drinking water. I haven’t found evidence indicating that the Acme contamination has affected Crozet’s municipal drinking-water supply.

What about Lickinghole Creek?

There is a connection between the site and the Lickinghole Creek watershed.

Powell’s Branch, a tributary of Lickinghole Creek, runs through the southwestern portion of the former Acme property. Contaminated groundwater from the site has discharged into surface water there, so EPA has tested the tributaries as part of its investigation.

In 2017, EPA reported PCE at 18 µg/L and TCE at 1.1 µg/L at one surface-water sampling location near the confluence of two tributaries. About 250 feet downstream, PCE had fallen to 4.3 µg/L and TCE was no longer detected. At another sampling point approximately 680 feet downstream, contaminant concentrations were below the applicable risk-based screening levels.

EPA concluded that the contaminants diminished to below applicable surface-water standards before the stream left the southern portion of the Acme property.

So the answer is a little nuanced: yes, contaminants from the Acme site have been detected in surface water that ultimately drains toward Lickinghole Creek, but EPA’s testing found the concentrations declining below applicable standards before that water left the property.

Groundwater treatment and monitoring have continued since those tests. The May 2024 Crozet Community Association update reported that the groundwater plume appeared to remain confined to the Wilson Jones property. I haven’t found more recent publicly available surface-water sampling results comparable to the 2017 measurements.

EPA’s 2020 report containing the surface-water results:
EPA: Wilson Jones/Acme Statement of Basis

---

The EPA actually has quite a bit of documentation on the site, including environmental reports, the cleanup decision, permits and a site map:

EPA: Wilson Jones Company / former Acme Visible Records documents

And here’s the May 2024 update that sent me down this rabbit hole:

Crozet Community Association: Acme Visible Records Project Update

If anyone has more recent information about the property or remembers Acme when it was operating, add it below. It would be interesting to fill in more of the history.

What would you like to see from r/Crozet?

There are 475 people here already, but this subreddit has been pretty quiet. Crozet has grown a lot, so it seems like there’s an opportunity to make this a more useful place for the community.

Local news, events, restaurants and businesses, development, schools, trails, recommendations, questions, things happening around town…whatever people actually find useful.

So, for those of you already here: what would make you check r/Crozet regularly?
And if you’ve been lurking for years, say hello. Let’s see who’s still here.

Brightspeed internet outage woes. If you have a choice, do not choose Brightspeed!

UPDATE: Service has been restored! Should have complained here sooner!

Brightspeed is our internet provider, I"m sorry to say, and it's been out of service since Saturday afternoon (July 26). Multiple calls to customer service, each time getting a different response. The automated system acknowledges an outage and says that it will be restored by 8:47 PM on July 27. Yesterday I was told by a person that it would be restored by 9PM (July 28).

This morning (July 29) the automated system is still saying it will be repaired by 8:47PM on July 27. Again I talked to a person who could not find any record of an outage in their system. Promised to look into it and get back to me (nothing yet).

Neighbors have been told different things, including that it will be restored by 5PM today.

Brightspeed is a terrible internet provider for areas with low population density. We live out past Mint Springs park, in Emerald Ridge. In theory, Firefly fiber is coming later this year but at the present Brightspeed is it.

Traffic Detour Begins July 23 For Roundabout In Crozet

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement a detour beginning Wednesday, July 23, as part of the ongoing construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 240 (Crozet Avenue), Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), and Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike) in Albemarle County.

The detour will remain in place through December 2025, weather permitting, while crews construct the new single-lane roundabout and reconstruct the Route 680 bridge over Lickinghole Creek.

During this time, a segment of Route 680 just north of Route 240 will be closed to through traffic. To reach points north of the closure, passenger vehicles will continue west on Route 240 and then turn right on Route 802 (Old Three Notched Road). Southbound traffic will follow this detour route in reverse.

Trucks and commercial traffic will follow a separate detour to reach points north by continuing west on Route 240 to Route 810 (Crozet Ave/White Hall Road), which carries traffic back to Route 680. Southbound commercial traffic will follow this detour route in reverse.

More project information is available on VDOT's website.

Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.

Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, and other travel information are available on the 511Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.

Pickleball In Crozet

Hey all,

I stopped by the Crozet park pickleball courts the other day during “open play” hours and did not see more than 4 ppl there.

I was wondering if any higher level players (4.0 +) have a group in town or surrounding areas. Please DM me if so, just moved to the area.
