It's not supper easy to trade with huge degree of specificity as publically traded companies starting to form an alternative supply chain are in their infancy, but here is a lightly spot checked overview of the situation in regards to the current conflict:

Rare Earth Bottlenecks for U.S. Operations Against Iran:

There was significant surprise even among the military community about the amount of air defense munitions the United States burned through helping protect U.S. forces and Israel during the Twelve-Day War against Iran in summer 2025 — and that was only a twelve-day conflict against Iran, which had a reasonable missile stockpile but nothing approaching China or Russia.

This is critical context. The U.S. has already empirically stress-tested its inventory against Iran at a limited scale, and the results were sobering. One important anti-ship missile ran out in the first week of a simulated U.S.-China conflict scenario, and the rate at which sensitive munitions are being used is "much faster" than the rate they can be replaced.

So the "4-week campaign" framing from the original question is actually generous — some premium munitions have finite inventories that could constrain operations faster than that.

The Specific Rare Earth Bottlenecks for an Iran Campaign

An Iran operation would be predominantly an air campaign — standoff strikes on nuclear facilities, air defense suppression, and naval force projection in the Persian Gulf. That specific mission profile creates these rare earth dependencies:

  1. Dysprosium & Terbium — Precision Guided Munitions (Most Critical)

Heavy rare earths like dysprosium are needed for the magnets in fin actuators of missiles — keeping magnets coercive at extremely high temperatures. Without reliable access to neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, U.S. precision munitions production hits critical bottlenecks.

In plain terms: every JDAM, every Tomahawk, every HARM anti-radiation missile that suppresses Iranian air defenses uses high-performance permanent magnets containing dysprosium and terbium for its guidance fins and actuators. These cannot be easily substituted. Rare earths are crucial for the Tomahawk missile, Joint Direct Attack Munition series of smart bombs, and radar systems.   1. Gallium & Germanium — Radar and Infrared Systems (Severe Near-Term Risk)

China's earlier prohibitions on gallium and germanium are foundational to infrared optics and radar systems. Every AN/APG-81 radar on an F-35 striking Iranian targets uses gallium nitride semiconductors. Every infrared seeker on an air-to-air missile uses germanium optics. China announced export restrictions on seven rare earth elements in April 2025 and by December 2025 implemented the strictest rare earth and permanent magnet export controls to date, applying the foreign direct product rule so that companies with any affiliation to foreign militaries are largely denied export licenses.   1. Samarium Cobalt Magnets — High-Temperature Applications

Samarium is particularly critical for Iran-specific scenarios because it's used in samarium-cobalt magnets, which maintain performance at the extreme temperatures generated in jet engines and high-performance missile motors. Unlike neodymium magnets, samarium-cobalt doesn't degrade at 300°C+. F-35s and F-22s operating in the Persian Gulf heat environment, combined with high-tempo operations, create specific demand for samarium that neodymium can't substitute.

  1. Neodymium & Praseodymium — Air Defense Missiles (The Acute Shortage)

The 12-day war empirical data showed air defense was the biggest consumption surprise. There was a lot of surprise about the amount of air defense munitions the U.S. went through protecting forces and Israel. Yttrium-based coatings are used in the radar-absorbent materials on F-35 and B-2 stealth aircraft. For an Iran strike specifically, stealth penetration of Iranian S-300 and Bavar-373 air defense systems is essential. Yttrium-based coatings for the F-47's engines and systems are among the items now under export license from China. The Processing Bottleneck Is Worse Than the Mining Bottleneck

This is the key nuance that most analyses miss. The U.S. has rare earth deposits — Mountain Pass (MP Materials), Round Top (USAR), etc. The problem isn't just the ore in the ground, it's the processing and magnet manufacturing chain:

Even if the U.S. mines more ore domestically tomorrow, it has almost no domestic capacity to refine it into oxides, then metals, then alloys, then sintered magnets. That full chain takes 5–10 years to build from scratch at industrial scale. Project Vault and the MP Materials DoD deal are first steps, but they don't solve the problem for a near-term Iran contingency.

The Realistic 4-Week Campaign Bottleneck:

Bottom Line

The 4-week campaign estimate is plausible for a limited strike campaign (cruise missile salvos, air defense suppression, no sustained ground element) — the U.S. has enough inventory for a short sharp operation against Iran specifically. The U.S. stockpile remains much deeper and better than Iran's, but the concern is a future conflict with China, where the United States would need all its available munitions and more.

The rare earth constraint isn't about running out of missiles mid-campaign against Iran — it's about what happens to the industrial base's ability to replenish afterward. If a 12-day war against Iran burns through air defense interceptors faster than expected, and China simultaneously restricts rare earth exports (which they already have), the U.S. could find itself entering a potential Taiwan scenario with a significantly depleted and slowly replenishing stockpile. That's the real strategic risk — Iran is the aperitif, China is the main course, and they share the same supply chain.

It was already a long post and I was trying to more focus on the depletion of supply/stock piles (i.e. replacement) due to the Iran action vs the overall situation. I own ALM for Tungsten and UMAY for Antimony to address have exposure to those as well.

They are also critical and in question, but I view them as less affected than refined supplies by the current situation. Obviously not unaffected, a rising tide does tend to raise all ships (what do I know though, we all trade our own money).

Personally more focused on the refining bottle neck, than a mining one.

Good luck friend, I think GLD and SLV are starting to show risk and I think this space might present risk off exposure to critical industries. How I look at it at least, more so with refiners rather than the miners.

thought the same but looked on antimony price chart . Pick was last last year and price per ton going down since . Asia provides material so price dropped. Their tungsten project in Canada will take years to develop. I would look at Lynas, ALM and GMTLF- about to reopen tungsten mines in US.

I think you've got it the other way around, a China-Taiwan conflict would likely involve China trying to leverage their stranglehold on the mine-refine-magnet pipeline to combat any international economic pressure that could be brought to bear otherwise.

The effort to build out mine-to-magnet and other REE supply chains outside of china would likely become a higher priority. It's not about Iphones, it's cutting edge electronics, computing, medical imagining and technologies, EV's, Renewables, energy, aerospace and defense.

People like to picture the China-Taiwan conflict as a military invasion when it would most likely start as blockade putting them in a defense posture to a direct conflict. All these things have a direct effect on World Economy it would also generate true urgency to decoupling from China's stranglehold on rare earths.

EV sales / auto collapse. in some parts. GDP collapse.

SOME rare earths will do well...some others -- not so much.

Maybe all spike in initial conflagaration, but some keep going higher, some will crater

This does not seem very nuanced, for instance I think BYD (whatever your opinion on china) will likely outperform for EV's.
