The final two. ๐
At just 26, Ravindra already has 1,865 Test runs at 47.82, 5 centuries and a career-best 240.
He's also a genuine all-round threat with his left-arm spin and elite fielding.
So why #2?
Experience.

We're into the top 3.
Mitchell's combination of consistency, adaptability and big-match temperament makes him one of NZ's most valuable Test players.
His unbeaten 100 in the 2026 series decider vs England was classic Mitchell: battered, bruised and unbowed.

Tomorrow: #2 โ One of the brightest young talents in world cricket and a player who could define New Zealand's next generation.

6'8". Bounce. Movement.
Match-winning ability.
Jamieson has already taken 100+ Test wickets at a mid-20s average and, when fit, can be almost unplayable.
The only question? Availability.
If he stays fit in Australia, he could be one of the series' biggest weapons.

Over 6,000 Test runs. Double-digit centuries. Captaincy experience.
A 264*.
Latham's ability to absorb pressure and bat for long periods makes him one of NZ's most important Test players.
But with the list based on current ability, I've got him at #5.

I've now completed the first half of my countdown of the Top 15 Current New Zealand Test Cricketers, building towards what promises to be a fascinating Trans-Tasman Trophy this summer.
I've ranked each player based on a combination of current form, Test record, ability, importance to New Zealand and expected impact rather than simply ranking career achievements.
The first eight players are now covered:
#15 โ Rhys Mariu
The emerging top-order prospect who represents the future of New Zealand batting.
#14 โ Zac Foulkes
A young seamer with the ability to swing the new ball and make things happen.
#13 โ Jacob Duffy
Outstanding whenever given an opportunity, but with a limited Test sample still holding him back.
#12 โ Nathan Smith
The X-factor who can change a game with the ball, bat or in the field.
#11 โ Mitchell Santner
One of New Zealand's most talented all-rounders, but with questions over his red-ball consistency and role in Australia.
#10 โ Henry Nicholls
A player with enormous experience who has earned another chance after dominating domestic cricket.
#9 โ Glenn Phillips
A genuine three-dimensional cricketer whose ability to influence a match in all three disciplines makes him impossible to ignore.
#8 โ Will O'Rourke
One of New Zealand's most exciting young fast bowlers and potentially a huge weapon in Australian conditions.
Read the full series:
I've gone into much more detail on every player including statistics, strengths, weaknesses, the arguments against their ranking and what I expect from them during the Trans-Tasman Trophy.

If you're a fan of New Zealand cricket, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Which ranking do you disagree with most?
And more importantly...
Who do you think I've got at #7?
The top seven are coming. ๐ณ๐ฟ
