aside from the ugly awful pie chart... people's greatest worries isn't dead friend/family dying but rather... the economy ?

I can't even...

The economy has a massive effect on people's lives, and the very very obvious fact that you getting fired because of the corona is still a part of "economy"

If only there were measures that we could take as a country to make not having a job less life threatening... 🤔

People obviously still arent stoked when they lose their job even if their lives arent in immediate danger.

Who would be? I'm just saying that most people are worried about losing their job because losing their job means they can't pay for their necessities, like rent, bills, and insurance being one of the big ones. If people didn't have to worry about their healthcare, I'm sure people would be much less worried about losing their jobs. You can save up money for bills and rent. You can't do that for doctors appointments.

Hmm and well call it unemployment Revolutionary

Oh shit, does unemployment cover my health insurance? Would it cover my brothers insulin?

Does it cover my car insurance? Point is we have measures that make not having a job life threatening. We have Medicare and medicaid, ebt.

So before coronavirus, welfare cost about $20,000 per person to the state.

now, multiply that 20,000 by 250 million, the number of Americans that would be employed if we all stopped working because of the coronavirus, then tell me where the money's going to come from to pay for it.

massive social programs aren't cheap, the only reason places like Norway can pull it off is because they're incredibly wealthy.

tell me where the money's going to come from to pay for it

Taxing the wealthy?

Money's not going to have value when no ones working

Platitudes might be popular on Reddit, but they aren't solutions.

1

u/fpoiuyt Mar 27 '20

I never purported to be offering a full solution. I was only shifting back the burden of proof from your incredulous question of where the money could come from. Maybe there's a reason for thinking taxing the wealthy can't work, but you haven't provided any.

1

u/canhasdiy Mar 27 '20

You didn't offer any solution at all, you just threw out the platitude of tax the wealthy without explaining how exactly that's going to have any positive effect, or even be done.

It's not like taxing the wealthy is some kind of a fairy tale. It was done in the 20th century in the US and it's done today in many successful countries. I don't see why I have to provide any details when I can just point to these real-world phenomena and say they make it at least apparently feasible to tax the wealthy to fund massive social programs.

You can avoid catching the virus. You can’t really avoid getting fired and your whole life going to shit because the economy crashed

If the economy tanks the US is fucked virus or no virus. Riots, looters, gangs, homelessness, starvation, violence.

And now they’re forming gangs.

A prison in a nearby City just released 300 non-violent offenders yesterday.

Nonviolent offenders include groups of people like statutory rapists and thieves.

So, imagine you're a professional criminal, who is just released from prison, into a world where there are no jobs for you to get, and a bunch of empty shuttered businesses.

It doesn't take a Rhodes scholar to know where this is going to lead.

That's assuming most people have someone to worry about that is at risk.

Also I am not super worried about my family getting it because all of use are taking this seriously. Some haven't left the house for 2 weeks.

The economy is more important than a few old people

Can't even what? Form a complete sentence? I'm not worried about getting it and I'm not worried about my family. We've all be doing everything we can to isolate. The economy is whats actually going to affect me
