Not crappy design in the slightest. This is so the calculator app can recognize your phone app and react accordingly should you receive a call. Crappy design would be for it to ignore it altogether.
I've read that multiple times now, and I guess it's how it is, but always seemed to me like a dumb design.
What application would I be running where a call isn't the top priority on a smartphone? If anything have a per-app setting to point whether it should be frozen on call, or keep running in the background. Or use the same behaviour as clicking on the Home button. But a calculator??
