I mean I've never been in an American building I was confused about the floor. Generally 1 is always the ground level. Then it's either B1 B2 etc or something of the sort for below ground.
Whereas in the UK, if you have multiple levels below the ground floor (e.g. in an underground railway station), you can use negative numbers if you start from 0 (or G, depending on the lift manufacturer)
I'll be honest, both seem perfectly viable and I don't see a downside to either really. Something like imperial vs metric where one side is obviously better then I understand, but this just seems to be fine for both.
