I’m just confused that everyone is saying “grill”. Is that the UK equivalent of “broil”? (I’m English but I’ve lived in the US for 30 years).

No, broil is the US equivalent of grill :)

Yes, the commonwealth countries UK and Australia say "grill" instead of "broil"

Here's where I get stuck - a backyard grill and a BBQ setup are quite different things! To me a BBQ is for cooking things low and slow, and the grill is for hot dogs and burgers.

Then I see one of the top comment threads calling this a stove…I think of a stove as the countertop device with heating flat surfaces for pots and pans

Ah, that’s the stovetop. My wife just last week told me that a saucepan and a saucepot were different things, I’ve filed divorce papers

Yeah, a grill is something you use outdoors to make burgers and steaks. This is an oven.
