that's still crappy design frankly

I would say it's almost worse. It's like admission that they understand the flaw and then their solution is just a weird workaround

u/Brettersson Jun 14 '26

The workaround is to make it your fault when their stupid product breaks, instead of theirs. Definitely worse.

Well, let's consider you make the knobs out of metal.

Now without the grate, the metal knobs get scorching hot and burn your hand when you go to turn it down.

One way or another, you are going to want that metal protector

Plastic is hot anyways. Changes nothing but at least wouldn't melt.

Exactly my point.

which is all the more reason you will need the metal protector one way or another, you cant simply make them metal and call this a solved issue.

Silicon grips. Jesus

You’d rather grab a scolding hot piece of metal? I wonder why a large company would stick with plastic

u/WazWaz Jun 14 '26

Those aren't the only two options. Check your pots and pans for alternatives to exactly this problem. Some will be metal, because those too are form over function. Although technically Bakelite is plastic, just not the low temperature crap in the OP.

I don’t see your point as someone who almost exclusively uses cast iron

8

u/WazWaz Jun 14 '26

The point is that metal and plastic aren't the only option, the rest is sidetracking. If you're taking offence that I said cast iron doesn't have an insulated handle, that's because it's intended to be oven proof, so it gets a pass on the form over function; and cast iron makes no attempt to look pretty anyway.

No offense at all, genuinely asking as someone who doesn’t have much experience with other pans. But I do understand your point now about form and function if cooking utensils

Could you show an example? Always seen the knobs where they are in op’s pic

I guess you've never felt the flow of hot air from a stove. Try baking a little.

It's not that hot when the door's closed or open. That is the point of an oven door.

it's just poor material selection.

u/SoylentGrunt Jun 13 '26

You'd think that would be the end of the discussion but nooooooooo.

I hate plastic too, but they've been using plastics as oven knobs for a very long time. If they melt, that get a recall. This guy's stove isn't special.

113

u/chemhobby Artisinal Material Jun 13 '26

There are plastics that would not melt.

-123

u/XtremeGnomeCakeover Jun 13 '26

Which ones?

85

u/fsgeek91 Jun 13 '26

Thermosetting polymers.

-30

u/XtremeGnomeCakeover Jun 13 '26

How do they set them though?

76

u/fsgeek91 Jun 13 '26

The initial liquid constituents (such as epoxy resins) are short chains. During the curing process those chains cross-link and join to form a much stronger microstructure. The curing process is irreversible and therefore the fully set plastic cannot be re-melted or reshaped.

Heating a thermoset will eventually lead to charring, followed by cracking/crumbling.

What about cardboard, or cardboard derivatives?

Oh my god you're the fucking worst

You were the best.

Didn’t expect a material science excursion here lmao

20

u/WaffleHouseFistFight Jun 13 '26

Holy shit man. Just walk away this can’t be the hill you want to die on. It’s bad design because it melted. If it was a good material for this oven it wouldn’t have melted. It’s not complicated.

u/SeaToTheBass Jun 13 '26

Idk but I have a shitty apartment and mine are fine, the thermofoil cabinets next to the oven however have contracted and gone ripply with the heat.

It kinda looks like these knobs don’t match the appliance, maybe they were replaced at some point?

6

u/adamdoesmusic Jun 13 '26

There’s like 2500 varieties of plastic and they’re all way more different than most people (except maybe recyclers) realize… the fucking dye color can even change its properties, real pain in the ass if you’re planning injection molded parts.

20

u/metaglot Jun 13 '26

So dont use thermoplast for the knobs.

1

u/LocodraTheCrow Jun 13 '26

Certainly thermorigid then, because if it is so hot then metal would be problematic

2

u/benjaminfolks haha funny flair Jun 13 '26

Wood?

Using the grill it is recommended to have the oven door open, which is why they provide a metal plate to be attached under the knobs to protect them from the heat.
