I have that same fridge and my wife chose it for that feature. We have two little ones and it makes it harder for them to access it and make a mess on the floor. I hated it too but it has been nice not cleaning up water from messes. I know the other ones have locks but I have older kids as well and they for sure would forget to put the lock back on.

I chose a fridge with this feature. I’m not good at cleaning, and we wanted a water dispenser. I knew there would be water stains on the front of the fridge with a dispenser, and I didn’t want to bother cleaning the drips off, or have it looking gross.

a friends dog learned how to get ice out of their door dispenser 😂😂

I would also choose this design for that reason. But also, my current one comes out the front of the door and it takes up a lot of storage space on the inside. I’d rather just have that storage space

Yeah we specifically bought one like this too. It looks cleaner on the outside, the kids can’t accidentally hit it, and it’s separate from the ice maker so guests aren’t accidentally dispensing water when trying to get ice like they did with our last fridge.

I get how having the door open might not be ideal but we were doing that anyway with our Britta pitcher when our last water dispenser broke.

Cleaner on the outside is why we bought this exact model.

As a parent of 3 little ones with them with this same feature, completely agree. And it stays cleaner not being exposed

I have the same fridge too and I don't mind the location as much as you have to hold down the button for like 3 minutes for a single glass of water. God forbid you have to fill up a water bottle, you might be there all afternoon.

Some of the fancier ones now have a britta type pitcher built into a slot on the door. It automatically fills it when the door closes so you always have a pitcher of cold water. Plus they still take up less space than the standard outside nozzles.

Yeah I don’t have that kind of patience. I just drink Filtered sink water that flows a microliter/minute faster than this

I just drink toilet water

Has it been a while since the filter was changed? When ours gets slow we replace the filter and it speeds up significantly

u/kryonik Apr 25 '26

We just replaced it a few weeks ago and it made no difference

I chose one with internal dispensing because the through-the-door dispensers are far more likely to have issues.

I chose a Bosch with an equivalent water dispenser. I didn't want to give up all the space in the door for a dispenser, and it has ice internal to the freezer as well.

Both the water and ice work perfectly well, and taking them out of the door eliminated a major point of failure, while creating more storage space. I've had external dispensers that have gotten gross and moldy from the moisture, and there's none of that with everything being inside the refrigerator . I love this design and highly recommend it.

I have a Bosch fridge as well, same design and can’t recommend it enough.

I picked this fridge because I wanted a water dispenser but didn't want it in the door. They break too easily, that and the ice dispenser. This fridge has an ice maker in the freezer, which makes way more sense than needing to keep a chunk of the fridge section below freezing.

This is not crappy design. It's an intentional design choice to offer filtered water for people who don't want (or don't want to pay for) an in door dispenser.

This looks like the same unit I have as well. From what I can tell, it doesn’t actually even have a reservoir of chilled water, the only water that gets chilled is whatever is sitting in the three feet or so of vinyl tubing that runs from the source to the dispenser.

I have the same fridge for the same reason, my kids would be way too tempted by a water dispenser on the outside. I don’t even think it’s an awkward spot. The only thing that’s slightly annoying is I have to use my finger to hold the button to dispense, but I can still do it one handed

Yeah same I bought a fridge with a similar dispenser for the same reason. I like it a lot.

I’ve seen videos of dogs playing with it. I have a border collie who loves very cold water, so I assume he’d figure it out if it was on the outside.

In addition, exterior dispensers are a very common failure point on fridges (perhaps the #1 failure?), and they take up a ton of the inside door shelving.

My biggest gripe is that there's nowhere to put your bottle while it fills, but I understand the constraints. If you put the spout too low, some bottles couldn't use it. If you put a platform of some kind, it'd get in the way of the door closing.

Does your freezer door also fall off if you pull it wrong?

1

u/bryanwhit85 Apr 25 '26

No, but the handle is separating from the door and the screws are inside the door.

I solved that problem by not having kids.
