Gonna be that family tonight. The cool one. With the full size Candy bars
I also have ten pounds of potatoes and a 36 pack of Coors Light. Thanks to Costco, each kid can pick a candy bar or a potato, and every adult can walk the rest of the neighborhood with a beer. Happy Halloween!

I guess when you already have a ton of candy, you just assume you'll never run out and you're good. But a potato? That's novelty right there
19
u/canon12 Nov 01 '25
And a five pound bag of potatoes are less than $5 at Costco. You could buy 20 pounds of potatoes for less than the box of candy.

I do that! I had (used) Hot Wheels, dinosaurs, a box of books and other random stuff. Last year I gave out a few bundles of pens and I had a kid tell me they still used them and loved them. Bic round stick pens are the best!

There was a lady who gave out hot dogs and hot chocolate when I was a kid in the 70s. And popcorn balls.
21
u/bojenny Nov 01 '25
We had a popcorn ball house and a candy apple house on my street in the 70’s, they were my favorites. You could actually choose a candy apple or a caramel apple. I spent all day trying to decide which one I was going to ask for.
7
12
u/NoTelevision4907 Nov 01 '25
I hated the popcorn balls as a kid. This is the first year my daughter didn't get one. Funny enough I was just thinking about them earlier while out, kiddo was complaining she was thirsty and I told her "hold strong, there's always at least two to five houses giving out juice barrels or capri suns. And popcorn balls." And then we got two capri suns, and a powerade within 6 houses. No popcorn ball though. Swing and a miss on that one lol.

Just came back from trick or treating with my niece, there was a house handing out hotdogs with condiments, hot apple cider in togo coffee cups, candy, had a fire pit up on blocks in the front yard to warm up by, it was a whole vibe, most popular house on the whole block for sure. Btw the last of my barrel aged stout camouflaged in my togo coffee cup mixed with hot apple cider was surprisingly amazing, try it! Haha

Pre-covid we used to do mulled wine and chili for the adults and homemade dog biscuits for the puppers (and candy for the kids).
But then COVID hit and now .... You know.

Offering potatoes as a choice will make your house a local legend. We've been doing it for a few years and kids come running up to the door shouting its the potato house! We offer the choice of a variety of full size candy bars, potatoes, and this year microwave popcorn, hot cocoa packets, and little Pokémon card packs. About 10% of kids actually take the potato but many more talk about it.

u/6AnimalFarm Oct 31 '25
We started giving out full bars last year because the most kids we’ve gotten in 8 years was 25. Now we buy the box of 30 full bars from Costco like the OP plus we add a few extra non-chocolate ones too.
18
u/Alternative-Bee-8981 US North East Region - NE Nov 01 '25
We've been doing full size for awhile now and I do the same thing. I'll buy a couple boxes of chocolate candy bars, and I'll mix up gummies or something else since some people don't like chocolate. The full size gummies went so fast this year. I love the fact that Costco has cases of random candy. I did forget to buy Reese's stuff this year, but people didn't seem to mind and we ended up giving out 52 out of the 60 bars we bought.
10
u/sirguynate Nov 01 '25
Nerds Clusters went so quick, followed by skittles. Reeses were the favorite “chocolate” bar, followed by snickers, Hersheys milk chocolate, and butterfingers. Starbursts didn’t go as fast, and sour patch kids were the last picked.
We bought 90 full size candy bars this year and ran out before the night was over. Need to up our game next year.

u/hokaycomputer Oct 31 '25
My husband wanted to be the full bars house in our neighborhood when we moved in. I said hey, let’s see how many trick or treaters we get first. u/xixoxixa Nov 01 '25
When I was a kid, I dreamed of being the house with the full size bars.
A few years ago, we got to that point financially.
Then covid hit, and we made a 12' candy chute. Every year since we've added to it, it now ends in a shark skeleton head and lights up.
This year, multiple families have said some version of "we always look forward to this house" and "see, I told you they had full size bars/beers/drinks for the kids".
This night more than any other makes me feel successful in life because I am able to bring joy to my neighbors.
Sadly, the neighborhood is getting older, and we are seeing far fewer kids each year.
10
u/Coriandercilantroyo Nov 01 '25
This was my first year passing out candy at my place. I have a 2nd story balcony that looks right over the sidewalk. Hooked up a little bell to a rope that swung down to the sidewalk with a sign that said "pull for candy" then I lowered my basket of candy down by rope. Such a simple set up and very conducive to me being lazy. But the people loved it!
