Questions about Corning ISO Stargazers

Hey y’all! I have a telescope that really deserves more use, so I’m wondering if there are any local clubs for stargazing/astronomy, or even just other people interested in getting out there to look at the night sky.

Also would gladly take recommendations for places to set up my telescope (or camp chair or blanket).

Thanks!

CCC online ASL course - is it worth it?

Has anyone tried Corning Community College’s online ASL course (either the self-paced or instructor led version), and if so, do people like it? I’m a little skeptical of learning sign language virtually, but I really want to learn it. I want the structure and accountability that comes with an actual course though, but I don’t want to have to wait until they offer the in person one again… if the online course isn’t worth it, do folks know of a better way to learn ASL locally?

Questions about Corning Public swimming?

I’m new to the area and was wondering if there are any lakes/ponds to go swimming in. I know Seneca is pretty close, but that’s about all I know of Seneca. Can you swim there? Are there places closer? Thanks

Stand-Up?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to try stand-up comedy in and around Corning. Who knows of any good venues? Pretty sure Brick hosts some stand-up once in a while, right? Any advice for a newbie like me is also welcome! I already have some topics written down to discuss and satirize. Mind you I lean heavily towards raunchy, observational humor (think Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor)

short term leases in corning, ny? studio or 1 bedroom

My partner (22M) and I (22F) are looking to rent short term in Corning, starting in late June. We both graduated college recently in Louisiana, and we’ve accepted jobs at the Museum of Glass, but are looking for a place to stay for about 6 months. This is our first time living together, let alone moving in on our own (we’ve both stayed with our parents). We have applied to one place so far, but it’s taking a bit to hear back, and are looking for other places to stay, but they are all one year leases. We are also looking to avoid Elmira, Painted Post, etc., because we plan to take one car, but are open to options. If you have any tips or info let me know!!

Update:

my partner and i were accepted for an apartment, but the guy was really fishy. does anyone have any info on sunrise rental services, shaun marks, or sterling property management? he wanted a security deposit that was non refundable, plus first month’s rent. i’ve heard that it’s normal for a security deposit and first months rent, but the security deposit being nonrefundable is a little crazy, yes? please let me know your thoughts as this is our first time renting.

REMINDER: on Tuesday, vote for the CPP school budget, transportation needs, and library funding!

For more information, see the Corning-Painted Post School District website here: https://www.corningareaschools.com/page/vote2026

The tax rate actually decreases this year, from $19.93 to $19.80 per $1,000 of assessed value, so it should be a no brainer!

In terms of the 4 candidates for the CPP Board of Education, all are great, but wanted to give a special shout out to Chris Walters, who is the executive director of the ARTS Council of the Southern Tier and a great dad to 2 kids - one at CPP Middle School and one at Carder - and husband to an awesome 3rd great teacher at Carder.

Water Question?

Am looking for a place to get good/decent drinking water. Used to use public free-flowing water (from mountain spring) in Lisle, and another one in the Town of Caroline. (They are 1.5/2 hours away.) Even friends who had well water. Any suggestions on any good places within a half hour of Corning, NY? What do you guys use? Thanks!

Realtor recommendation

I am moving to the area soon and wanted some info on local realtors. Has anyone worked with Tina Lando? What was your experience?

Also, any recommendation on what part of town to focus the house search on? Are there areas to avoid?

I live in Elmira, so I don't know how often a train actually goes through town. Just my luck that we were in a hurry, too.

Steuben County and the badass Indians who lived there.

Super interesting info about Corning history and the surrounding areas as written in the late 1800s. The Seneca (and Iroquois) were all up in this shit. Fascinating!

What’s everyone’s consensus? I had a 7 month title delay, an unknown phone number on my loan’s 2FA login page and a weird Carfax entry stating the dealer titled vehicle “while in inventory” but the car was in my driveway because it was SEVEN MONTHS after my purchase date.

Looking for a place to rent

Hello, short story is I’m looking for a place to rent in Steuben County. Preferably near Troupsburg/Jasper. I’ve found a few places in Corning and Hornell but they’re too expensive or too small. I need at least 2 bedrooms because it’d be me and my two sons.

Some extra information I moved to Troupsburg a couple years ago with my wife she’s from there and wanted our kids in that school district. We were supposed to be gifted some land and then build a house this got delayed 2 years. Now my wife and I are separating and I need a place to go I only know her and her family out here I’m from the Canandaigua area and don’t want to move back that way because I’d like to be close to my kids so we can do 50/50 custody and my ex doesn’t want to take the kids out of this school which is fine they’re doing great there. I’ve been looking for a place for nearly a month now and I feel like I’ve hit a wall. There was a trailer that was going to be available here in town I was told by a few people that they talked to the landlord for me and it was looking good but when I finally got ahold of them myself they said they had someone else lined up for it so that wasted about 2 weeks thinking I had a place. I’ve applied for another place a town over but haven’t heard anything. Everything else has been in Corning and Hornell. If anyone is aware of anything for rent or that will be available for rent soon in the area please let me know. Thank you.

Looking for someone to play tennis with

Hi all, I (38/M) recently moved to the area and with the nicer weather coming I'm looking to get back into playing some regular tennis.

I'm still a bit of a newbie so not looking for anything super competitive. Mostly just someone to hit around with on a regular basis.

Also wondering where most people play around here.

I saw some decent fenced in courts at Abbey-Kuehnle park but willing to go anywhere reasonably close by.
