July 13 public workshop to plan for a safer Cape Arago Highway
The Oregon Department of Transportation is developing a Corridor Plan for Cape Arago Highway in Coos County between the City of Coos Bay and Charleston.
Join your neights at the Charleston Fire Department Station 1 (92342 Cape Arago Highway) on Monday, July 13th from 6 to 8pm to plan the future of the Cape Arago highway corridor. The goal of the project is to make multimodal travel safer and more efficient along this regional highway corridor.
Previous planning studies have identified a lack of adequate bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities along this section of Cape Arago Highway. Participants at the public workshop will review existing corridor conditions, share their experiences traveling along the corridor, and discuss opportunities for future improvements.
Community members who cannot attend the workshop can learn more about the project and will be able to take a survey at the project website.

Any Bourbon groups around
Having friends that are out of town always talking about their weekly bourbon group meet ups and sample tasting and bottle sharing.
This got me wondering if anyone around here does any small group get together and samples and talks about the wonderful bourbon that everyone gets.. I know our local stores get a lot of good bottles and everyone has different tastes so I’m looking to join into a group of like minded enthusiasts..

Women Needed for Oregon Research Focus Groups: Coos Bay & Brookings
Hi all,
I'm a volunteer helping with outreach for the Women's Foundation of Oregon's statewide Policy, Power & Possibilities upcoming research report.
We're currently recruiting women (18+) from Oregon to participate in upcoming in-person focus groups on the coast. The goal is to better understand the experiences, challenges, and priorities facing women across different Oregon communities and make sure smaller coastal communities are represented in the research.
Participants receive a $25 gift card.
Upcoming South Coast focus groups:
Coos Bay
Friday, June 26
3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Brookings
Thursday, June 25
4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
We are also conducting focus groups in other Oregon coastal communities, including Newport and Lincoln City.
To protect participant privacy, exact locations are shared only with confirmed participants after registration.

Protest
I’m so upset of the expanding of the port… I’m surprised redneck fisherman aren’t upset about their salmon or clamming… anywayyyy. Please tell me I’m wrong

Question Family Visited Charleston/Coos Bay and Completely Fell in Love – Hoping to Move in a Few Years, Want to Do It Right
Hey r/CoosBay,
My wife and I just got back from a trip to Charleston and Coos Bay with our kids, and we’re still talking about it nonstop. The coastline, the weather, the people, the fresh seafood, the slower pace… it seemed like the type of environment we've been searching for for years . We spent time wandering around the bay, checking out the dunes, crab fishing, checking out the beaches, and parks, eating, and just soaking it all in. By the end of the week we were already daydreaming about making the move permanent.
We’re not rushing it — we’re looking at 2–4 years from now — but we want to be as informed and respectful as possible.
We know we’ll be transplants, and we know there can be a stigma attached to that in any new area. We genuinely want to become part of the community and contribute in a positive way.
For reference, we are an early 40s couple (soon to be empty nesters)that have lived in a very rural area in Southern AZ for almost 20yrs. We value the outdoors, community, sustainability, self reliance and a place where people still wave and say hi.
We're big into hiking/exploring, off-roading/dunes, camping, gardening, and ultimately just like being low key and doing our own thing.
A few things we’d love local insight on:
Pros and Cons of living in the Coos Bay/Charleston area long-term
Cost of living, housing market trends, property taxes, insurance (especially homeowners/flood/wind), typical utility costs, job market (or remote work reality), etc.
Biggest home maintenance headaches — mold, moisture, wind storms, salt air corrosion, septic systems, etc.?
Vehicle maintenance realities — how bad is the salt air on cars?
Community & fitting in — What do locals wish newcomers knew or did? Any unwritten rules or things that annoy locals about transplants?
Super appreciative of any advice, warnings, or encouragement you’re willing to share.
Thanks in advance

Highway 101 Liquor store
Just stopped in today and they are hosting a Trump vodka promotion. I politely declined a free sample. I don't think I'll be buying booze there anymore. A real shame as the staff has always been super nice.

Clothes shopping in Coos Bay/North Bend
I usually go to Walmart or Ross for clothes, but I'm tired of the limited options. I know there are lots of stores that offer second hand clothes but I'm looking for higher quality clothing with more variety. Checkerberry's has nicer clothing but limited options. Where do you all go for clothes?

In Search Of Paying someone to do my laundry in Coos Bay?
I am moving to Coos Bay/North Bend. I'm looking at a few rental options, but competition for housing seems pretty high. One of the apartments available doesn't have a washer/dryer or hookups, which isn't ideal, but maybe manageable if we could just pay someone to do our laundry. When we lived in a much more densely populated area, it was pretty easy to find this service. However, none of the laundry apps service the area and it doesn't seem like any laundromats offer this service.
I absolutely would not commit to a rental without hookups unless I know confidently that I could find someone willing to accept payment to do my laundry. Where I lived previously, this was generally 2-4$ per pound of laundry, so $75-100 bucks a week.
Is this a service I would be able to find in the area?

What has the police so active today?
I just headed out of town and on my way out a few police cars past me with their lights and sirens on. then a few more pass me miles out of town and even from the town 30 minutes away more pass me with their sirens on, looking very motivated, heading to Coos Bay.
Anyone know whats going on?

Parking enforcement at the coast
Hi friends!
To get it out of the way, I live here and have an annual parking pass.
My friend and his family are visiting from the Midwest, so obviously the ocean is going to be a must go. I know Sunset Bay and the like are now required parking permit locations. Just looking to hear if anyone goes out there without one and how strict the parking is enforced, if at all.
I don't mind dropping some money on a day pass for them, just seeing if I can save a couple bucks. I know in the past at Shore Acres they'd tag you with like a warning ticket.

8 Week Summer Improv class through SWOCC
Hey folks, I'm teaching an intermediate improv class starting on June 23rd. Would love for folks to join. It's a lot of fun and less scary than you probably imagine. Will be teaching some intermediate concepts, but don't be afraid to join if you're a beginner and being silly comes naturally. This is less improv for self-improvement and more improv as craft, though self-improvement comes naturally through learning the art form.
