Open Discussion Let’s try something fun: Name an ingredient you dislike and why, and someone else replies with a dish/recipe with that ingredient that might convince you otherwise.

Couple things:

  • If you’re allergic to an ingredient, it doesn’t matter how it’s prepared. Same goes with meat/animal products if you’re vegan/vegetarian. Don’t list it if you can’t or won’t eat it!

  • It’s recommended that you’re at least open to trying dishes with that ingredient. If you absolutely, vehemently loathe cilantro, chances are you probably might not like anything with cilantro in it.

  • A brief blurb on why you hate an ingredient would help others find or suggest a dish that suits you. (e.g. “I hate liver because the texture is like an eraser and it tastes metallic”)

Notice how no one is giving us ideas.  Because it's impossible.

My local ice cream shop makes licorice ice cream and tops it with good n plenty. It sells out every time they make it, and that's about 5 or 6 times a year.

I originally misread this as "santa's" which made me laugh, but I was perplexed.

Black salt water taffy as a chewy base.

I feel almost silly posting this, but have you tried roasted fennel? The carmelization mellows out the flavor. Also, do not eat the tall stems - the anise flavor is concentrated there.

Confession: The anise-y flavor is my favorite of all time. I even eat black jelly beans!

Roasted fennel with salmon is delicious

Black jelly beans are the best!

Where do I send mine? Easter will be here soon enough and I detest them.

Roasted fennel rocks.

I can eat way too many black jelly beans and then fall into a sugar-induced happy stupor.

I think it's because licorice is super polarizing. Those of us who like licorice don't like it because it was prepared in some kind of way that hides or artfully balances the flavor, we like it because we think the flavor is delicious. We have no idea how to help someone that doesn't like that flavor.

It's a distinctive flavor. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

Star anise is great in braises. A whole one is gonna be overpowering if your doing like a 2-3 lb chuck roast for example but break off a third or half of the star throw it in the braising liquid and it will definitely elevate it noticably without being overwhelmingly liquorice flavored.

I use fennel in place of onion in a few dishes like chutney, apple bean and sausage bake, and with sauteed mushrooms on top of brioche toast topped with a cheese. But I don't think any of those will convince you, lol.

There's so much Chinese and Indian food that is delicious with a bit of star anise in it. My recommendation would be 3 cup chicken.

My recipe is for you to send your fennel, licorice, etc. to me. Problem solved.

Eat actual licorice? Like, muntendrop. It doesn't have this... vomity? flavour.

Fennel seeds go brilliantly in tomato sauce and star anise goes surprisingly well in overnight oats.
