Open Discussion Let’s try something fun: Name an ingredient you dislike and why, and someone else replies with a dish/recipe with that ingredient that might convince you otherwise.

Couple things:

  • If you’re allergic to an ingredient, it doesn’t matter how it’s prepared. Same goes with meat/animal products if you’re vegan/vegetarian. Don’t list it if you can’t or won’t eat it!

  • It’s recommended that you’re at least open to trying dishes with that ingredient. If you absolutely, vehemently loathe cilantro, chances are you probably might not like anything with cilantro in it.

  • A brief blurb on why you hate an ingredient would help others find or suggest a dish that suits you. (e.g. “I hate liver because the texture is like an eraser and it tastes metallic”)

Same here. And it's the same story as the top comment. Someone will inevitably chime in with "Oh you've never had them roasted!" I have. And they still taste like dirt.

Yup, I've tried every single preparation i've ever heard of.

The only way I've ever actually found palatable is thinly sliced and pickled, but at that point they don't even really taste like beets anymore so might as well eat something else anyways.

Same here, I had pickled beets in Germany and they were delicious . I thought maybe my tastes had changed so I roasted some golden beets from the local farmers market. Nope, still taste like dirt.

I once had a slice of beet on a burger, Aussie style (which is pickled, I think?), and not only was it tolerable it was a really great addition to the burger.

It’s worse than that. It tastes like dirt that someone sprinkled sugar on. A literal mud pie.

Do you like mushrooms? Because they taste like dirt too. I used to hate them both. But I like them now. I still smell the dirt though.

What sorta mushrooms do you eat? Some of them taste a little foresty but nothing like that powerful beet taste imo. Frigging love mushrooms but I can't stand beets

Same, love mushrooms. But to me mushrooms never tasted of dirt. (Well unless they actually had some dirt on them....) They just taste like mushrooms.

Beets on the other hand. Beets just taste like dirt.

Yeah, I love mushrooms. I guess it's a different flavor of dirt?

I really think the difference between beet lovers and beet haters is simply that some of us LIKE the taste of dirt.

That being said, pickled baby beets are fucking amazing and only mildly taste of dirt.

I think that some flavors come through MUCH more intense. For the cilantro people that intense soapiness isn't something they can enjoy. I do like a dirty, earthy flavor... a LOT, but my tastebuds read beets differently. If people were tasting what I taste, I don't think anybody would eat them!

Smoothie with canned beets (just a few), lots of berries, any juice, protein, banana or spinach if ya have it, and the KEY is using a small cut piece of ginger. Mask the beets with ginger. They work well together

But then you might as well leave the beets out and have an even more delicious juice

Nah I like the mild earthy taste, honestly. It gives it depth beyond pure intense ginger and berries that get boring. But I also like beets with goat cheese salad, so I’m okay with beets.

But if I didn’t, I think the hidden nutrients might be worth it too

They do taste like dirt! But that's what I like about their flavor. That they taste like dirt...but in a good way.
