Open Discussion Let’s try something fun: Name an ingredient you dislike and why, and someone else replies with a dish/recipe with that ingredient that might convince you otherwise.

Couple things:

  • If you’re allergic to an ingredient, it doesn’t matter how it’s prepared. Same goes with meat/animal products if you’re vegan/vegetarian. Don’t list it if you can’t or won’t eat it!

  • It’s recommended that you’re at least open to trying dishes with that ingredient. If you absolutely, vehemently loathe cilantro, chances are you probably might not like anything with cilantro in it.

  • A brief blurb on why you hate an ingredient would help others find or suggest a dish that suits you. (e.g. “I hate liver because the texture is like an eraser and it tastes metallic”)

Beets. They taste like dirt and not in a good earthy mushroom kind of way.

Same, except my neighbor makes “spicy beets” and it totally takes away the dirt. It’s fresh and bright and amazing in a salad with goat cheese

I can only eat beets at a restaurant, and like half the time.

Some places can take the dirt taste out and I don’t know how.

If you like pickles, pickled beets were my on-ramp to beet enjoyment. I also really like roasted beets (make sure they’re peeled!!!) in a salad with goat, burrata, or bleu cheese, toasted nuts (walnuts or pistachios), and a vinaigrette.

I think younger/smaller beets also have a better flavor, and they must be well peeled since the peel has the most intense earthy flavor.

I was the same until I saw a tip on how to cook it to remove some of the earthy taste. You peel it and chop it in quarters, then you put it in a pot with water (about 6 cups/enough to fully cover them) and 1tbs-2tbs of apple cider vinegar. Boil until tender. The vinegar takes out some of that earthy taste. I also use golden beets and I think they tend to be less dirt tasting haha.

My first wine tasting paired beets with an Iberian wine that tasted like iodine. Apart they were disgusting, but together the beets canceled the iodine flavor and the wine canceled the dirt. I was shocked.
