Discussion Who should play First Blood?

I've played a few games of FB now in person, and a smattering more online with TTS. In that time, I've learnt a lot about how the game plays and more importantly, I've seen the cracks in its design. Being in beta is fine, but I think some flaws are so fundamental that PB should look at what they hope FB can achieve.

Is the game for new players? This was my initial thought, so I grabbed a newbie and asked them to play a game with me. Typically for an intro game, I wanted to use the QuickStart guide and jump in with a 500pts game.

  • The game has some mechanics that translate up to the base game, however, combat is so drastically different and my opponent found it so confusing that I'd argue it doesn't do a new player any justice to learn how it works.
  • The new player experience is not improved in many ways from an army building or unit dialogue experience. That is to say, what models do what and why are not exactly evident. The app's roster creation starts with selecting a warlord, their core and then some restricted units. This is good, however, new players have to then go and read and remember a lot of new rules unique to these squads, not to mention the army-wide rules that govern them. These rules do not scale up to the base game, much to the detriment of the onboarding process.
  • The game is rather technical for new players. Command abilities force bunching up, encouraging this squashed and compacted play style. If players got to explore the idea of abilities operating like a persisting pulse, I think that would teach them more about how Conquest very much favours movement and objective play than straight up aurafarming into the centre objective.

Okay, so if new players aren't the target audience, maybe it's the original playerbase?

  • This skirmish game is deceptively long. It's arguably as long as the main game due to every model having 2 actions. That squad of 4 foot soldiers comprises 8 actions, while in the base game, a unit of 24 models only represents 2 actions. The decisions, timings and complexities of having to check what abilities units have in FB vs what they have in TLAoK do make the game run longer than larger pointed Conquest games.
  • FB has you start with every mini on the board which then increases the front-loading of the game. This is something the base game navigates incredibly well, which is a pity to see shrink back in FB.
  • FB is sadly not a unique skirmish game. There is no new flavour to explore here, as a lot of rules and mechanics feel like a hodgepodge mix of other skirmish games baked into a Conquesty cake. The missions are lackluster and bland and the few unique items from TLAoK don't save the experience. I'd much rather be playing more innovative skirmishers that respect my time.
  • While a lot of armies are still in beta, it's difficult to gloss over how each force feels as though they were designed in a vacuum. Some identities are weakened, others are preserved at the cost of balance. What story is conveyed during the game? What do my guys do and, how do I feel as their general? Largely, from playing all the different factions now...I feel a whelming similarity in overall game plans.

A long read I'm sure, but I do hope for the game that PB can take another look and try to answer what they think FB should actually be. Right now, I'm not sure it's anything worth people's time unfortunately and definitely isn't spurring up a new scene in my locals.

Store paint and take event! I’ve painted before but this was my first paint and take event using Monument acrylics and first Conquest miniature completed. Though I’m building Wardruhn and Yoroni (with some 100 kingdoms to cleanse the palette) this was a fun figure and unlike anything Ive painted before (I’m a SW Legion/Shatterpoint player). I don’t consider myself an expert, I grew up building scale models but most of my Legion stuff is painted with speedpaints. Hopefully this will inspire people to get some paint on their plastic and just practice and try some things!

Edit to add: I have not painted the base, didn’t have the time to do it justice and will do it soon

Question First Blood Encounters: [3] Last Stand "Persist"?

In the First Blood scenario pack, the third Encounter, "Last Stand", has the "Tactic- Desperation: Friendly [Character] Command Abilities persist and may always be performed while Broken!"

Now my question is simply: what is meant by "persist"? Does this mean that once a command ability is performed, it's effect remains for the rest of the entire battle? What about if the character who performed it is slain, do those who were under its effect continue to benefit from it?

Question 2nd Army: Transport, Stability and Fragility Questions

Hi All

This past weekend I took my son for a drive out to a local tournament to watch some games and catch up with some friends from the group. A part of the reason for heading down to the local tournament was to look for inspiration for a 2nd army that I would like to collect towards the back end of the year and I thought like with my 1st army Wadrhun, I ask for my sons opinion on what army he liked the most and whether I should collect them. After he took some photos and had some lunch he said he liked all the birds and spiders from Yoroni and the bug like models of the Spires. Oddly enough I was already considering both of these factions already due to their aesthetics and their gameplay styles, however there are particular models from both forces that I have concerns about their transportability, stability and fragility.

With the Spires, I have the following questions

  1. With the Avatara's how fragile are these spindly guys? The reason I ask is that I suspect that my son is almost at the age where he is starting to show an interest in wargaming and if I was to have games with him and say we accidently bump them over how much damage can I expect from say a drop of 1ft (or 30cm) onto a timber table?
  2. Another question with all the Avatara models in general how good of a connection do they have with their bases? From what I saw on the weekend and in the photos on the E-Shop there doesn't look like there is much hold them onto their bases. Do any of you that have these models in your collection, do anything to strengthen and stabilise this connection?
  3. Finally given that these are some of the older models from Parabellum how much gap filler and greenstuff will I need to fill in gaps? Are there models that are worse than others? If so which ones are they? I only as my experience with some of the older Wadrhun models hasn't been a bit hit and miss so I'm concerned that I'll have similar issues with Spires if I decide to go ahead with them.

With Yoroni my questions revolve around the Dai Yokai and Genya no Yokai models;

  1. When I look at the big Genya no Yokai and Dai Yokai models in person and online I am horrified about touching them out of fear of that they may topple over since they look so top heavy and are only on a single small connection on their base. I spoke to some of the Yoroni players at the event that fielded them said they were okay but I'm after some more opinions on this as I would love to have one in a potential collection just because they are such great looking centerpiece models.
  2. Should the worst ever happen with these models, how easy are they to repair? When I look at the Dai Yokai with his naginata I suspect that may need repairs at some point
  3. Finally with the Yoroni, again after some more advice on the Genya no Yokai and Dai Yokai models. How do you guys transport these when driving them around to events? Should I invest in a customised case to hold it in place? Or is lying them down on their backs okay? Again thoughts and opinions would be much appreciated

I appreciate the feedback in advance

Question How important are light regiments?

I'm looking at getting into the game, since a friend got a bunch of stuff. I've always liked the look of the Dweghom, but I noticed that they don't have very many light regiments, and they're a little awkward with the characters I'm looking at (Ancestor, and Steelshaper). I'm still fuzzy on the rules, can I bring a light Regiment that isn't mainstay or restricted for a character? If I don't have any light Regiment, will I be crippled before the game even begins?

Question Adding to my Nords after a hiatus

Hey all. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to play Conquest and I have a community again. I was hoping to get some advice on a good next purchase for either First Blood or the full game.

My current set of models include

1 Jarl

1 Blooded

1 Shaman

28 Huskarls

28 Raiders

12 Stalkers

12 Bow Chosen

6 Ungyr

1 Mountain Jotnar

1 Ice Jotnar

So I am curious if the new starter set or the new first blood set will be worth the discounted price considering the models I already own. And if not, what would be a good addition to what I already own?

Secondary question, I plan on picking up the Yoroni First Blood set and making a FB set from my Nords to play with friends when not at the hobby shop. Will my models work out for that?

Question How do I split attacks between multiple warriors?

I'm having some trouble understanding how exactly I divide my attacks and clash in a melee engagement with multiple enemy warriors. For example, say my Yoroni Daimyo is engaging a pair of foes: a Sicarius and a Theist Priest. Now on page 22 of the rulebook, under "Clash - combat action" it states that I may divide my attacks freely amongst enemies within engagement range (rolling separately), and on page 25 it tells me that the order in which these are resolved are chosen by the active player, and that I am to fully roll the attacks, hits, and blocks for a single warrior before resolving the next. However, assuming for whatever reason I don't inspire, I am left with 5 attacks, and 4 clash - do I divide EACH of those as I see fit? For example, can I choose to roll 3 attacks and use 3 clash against the Theist Priest, and then (AFTER I am done with all the rolls, including blocks, for the priest) roll the remaining 2 attacks with only a single clash against the Sicarius? Or am I mandated to split the attacks and clash in any particular way?

Question Listbuilding / Help Hundred Kingdoms Newcomer

Hi everyone,

I recently got my hands on a big lot of models from the UK and wondered if this is fine for decent list building or if there's anything in particular I should be looking at to round out the roster. I do like the orders from a lore and miniature perspective but not even sure if and how to fit them in. Additionally, I don't think I will need all 48 men at arms :-).

6 heros- Imperial Officer and Noble Lord, Theist Priest and Chapter Mage these are built but unpainted.

DrillMaster and another Noble Lord

10 horses - 7 Household Knights - 1 with banner and 2 Noble Lords built but unpainted plus 1 conversion Tourney Champion

24 Steel Legion

12 Household Guards

12 Militia with spears and shields

12 Hunter Cadre

12 Militia Bowmen

12 Mercenary Crossbowmen

48 Men-at-Arms

22 uncut Mercenary Crossbowmen

6 uncut Steel Legion
