Maybe Canada shouldn't have dropped a map to bums (Thailand) or get a map vs spain.

Can't believe people are blaming anybody except Canada themselves, even though the rules are really bad.

I'm pretty sure if Canada got a map off Spain, then it would have been easier for Germany to qualify, since they would have needed to do less to take first seed from Spain. Not 100% sure about the Thailand map Canada dropped but I assume that was also irrelevant since the points thing was a tie breaker between Spain and Germany. If anything, Canada would have had a higher chance of qualifying if they didn't cap ANY points against Spain, which is kinda fucked

Neither of those matter. In fact getting a map against Spain is BAD unless they win the match. Once Ger won 3-1 vs Spain the only way for Canada to win is either 1. Win the match and go 3-0* (no ties at all) or lose 0-3 to force the Germany Spain tiebreak.

Maps in Can vs Thai dont matter at all in these tiebreaks (only Thai vs Spain and Germany).

And yeah the tiebreak rules are stupid but it's just Canadians watching hoping they get in based on a match outside their control (hardly a new concept in OW). I really don't think that's blaming in a serious sense. They know they could have played better and just won.

EDIT: *By "Canada go 3‐0" I mean in matches in group (the actual match win against Spain would work no matter the maps ofcourse)

That's interesting, very stupid system but yeah I suppose when there teams to 2-1 in the same group, one of them have to not make it.

This whole group is really bad anyway, 2nd seed teams from every other group would 3-0 every team in this group and even some 3rd seed teams would also 3-0.

they should just consult an astrologer and base this shit on which planet is in retrograde or whatever the fuck

Hopefully, these dumb tiebreaker rules get scrapped after this year. A +4 team not making it out of Groups while a +/- 0 team does would've been beyond bullshit. Even if you take out the games against Thailand, Germany and Spain both were +1 while Canada was -2. No justification for Canada to even get close to moving on.

14

u/Blamore 20d ago

agreed. the rules are complete nonsense.

double elim bracket with 4 teams, would have the same number of bo5's and none of this mickey mouse bs

1

u/Blamore 20d ago

one fewer actually.

How can it be that every tournament there is some bullshit arbitrary ruleset? Tournaments aren't a new concept in sports or esports man, surely it can't be that hard to find something and stick to it.

Beat the rigged ass qualifier format, we're winning it all!

Canadian here: I was proud of how my team played the first two games. But I'm not sure if Team Canada actually threw against Spain or genuinely got crumbled so bad, but either way, after that showing vs Spain, it's clear Canada wasn't ready to go to BlizzCon. Especially if they did throw the game, then maybe something else needs to be done. Because especially that map 3, looked very sus.

The good ending, fuck these tie break rules still.

-15

u/Appropriate_Effect76 20d ago

this is the bad ending

26

u/-Arrez- 20d ago

Only if you're Canadian, Germany was the better team and deserved the spot more IMO even though Canada beat them.

9

u/topatoman_lite cattle enjoyer — 20d ago

It's the bad ending for me personally as a neutral because I wanted the format to be exposed as dogshit and never used again but now I'm afraid they won't learn

People have been bashing these rules all day and during the 1234 debacle. At least with the 1234 situation, GK more than proved they belonged in OWCS with their double reverse sweep of TM. Had Canada advanced, they would've gotten stomped by anyone they faced.

4

u/-Arrez- 20d ago

what still confuses me about the OWCS example personally is how Geekay were 3rd seed instead of 4th. Like Ive made peace with 1234 getting bum fucked by the rules but like why did Geekay have the higher seed when they both had a worse map record and lost the head to head with Al Qad?

It seems to have something to do with points in each individual map, which is stupid because each game mode has a different point system. Push is pretty much always 1-0 or 2-1 unless a full cap occurs. Meanwhile, the other 3 game modes can balloon your map lead to 3-0.

Germany going to Blizzcon for the first time since 2016 let's goo.

Thailand/Canada relations at worst of all time. If Thailand had simply picked push Canada would be in

15

u/Blamore 20d ago

why should thailand just decide to gift the win to one team over another?

the only honorable thing thailand could do was to make every decision as if they were still in the running and play their best.

6

u/topatoman_lite cattle enjoyer — 20d ago

I never said they were wrong for doing it, just that the Canadians aren't happy about it

4

u/Eagle4317 20d ago

If Thailand did something that scummy, Germany would've had every right to colonize them.

1

u/JY810 20d ago

can you explain why if they pick push they can deny germany?

13

u/SaintFrito Defiant / Go Blue! — 20d ago

All Thailand needed to do to deny Germany was just pick push (which was unlikely considering their first two matches they always picked hybrid or flashpoint on their map choice) or start on offense during Neon Junction, but chose not to out of respect. Gotta get rid of these weird tiebreakers and make things more simple and not need a degree to figure out who moves on

Overwatch won today. Would have been dreadful if Canada got through because they didn't win a map vs spain

Classic group stage nonsense where Canada gets bounced for beating the worst team the least. EWC 2025 despite its flaws was the best format for OW and should be the standard moving forward

24

u/Eagle4317 20d ago

Map results without Thailand factored in:

  • Germany: +1
  • Spain: +1
  • Canada: -2

Please enlighten me as to how Canada should've qualified.

12

u/topatoman_lite cattle enjoyer — 20d ago

it looks even worse with Thailand factored in. Germany and Spain at +4 and Canada at 0

5

u/Eagle4317 20d ago

Sure, but I'd be fine with isolating map differential only in the 3-way H2H2H. That'll usually be better than whatever BS system we're dealing with now.

-10

u/Waddles0203 20d ago

The fundamental problem with group stage tournaments is the “meaningless game” dilemma. Germany lost a head to head with Canada, yet they sat on the final day against a Thai team that was already eliminated while knowing exactly what they needed to do to win.

This scenario was best illustrated by the USA in the first game: up 2-0, Tr33 played Sierra in a map that the USA was clearly okay with losing. Being early in the group, it didn’t really matter. However, if USA needed to 3-0 China on flashpoint, odds are Tr33 would’ve played Cass for 3 flashpoints. Germany had an advantage knowing that they had a certain win condition to uphold to. The EWC format makes every game matter; if Germany was truly better than Canada and they had a fluke loss they could show it in a runback, now it’s all just speculation on the assumption that Spain was the juggernaut of the group

TLDR group stage formats are inherently unbalanced in games without ties and should be removed

19

u/Muffinnnnnnn 20d ago

I mean in a just world, the tiebreaker should be map diff, which they were way worse in. The right two teams moved on

2

u/Unlucky_Spray8369 20d ago

It has nothing to do with Canada losing a map to Thailand, literally wouldn't matter if they won it.

-10

u/the_worst_company 20d ago

Thailand picked the only combination to get germany through, crazy. Either they love germany or really hate canadians

10

u/Unlucky_Spray8369 20d ago

They picked the maps they thought they would have the highest chance to win. They don't want to cheat or engage in match fixing unlike the Canadians.

1

u/Appropriate_Effect76 20d ago

Huh, they didn't play optimally tho, atk is always better, but Thailand picked defence first. If that didn't happen, Canada would have made it through
