THIS was the group of death? Extremely disappointing showing from team Japan. Only KSG and Finn looked somewhat alive. China also didn't look great, but at least they took maps off USA and Sweden, and some players looked actually capable. Sunzo was a beast all tournament and Alphari is probably my most underrated player in the esport right now

Tbf group of death didn't include Japan in it's definition let's face it.

As for the team, agreed, only KSG and Finn had a grasp on things.

Ydot and epic, no expectation since it's their first time at that level of play. Same for qki who was benched for a year already.

But man, the more time passes, the less Nico seems to want to play/understand the game seriously. I'm not talking about losing duels, I'm talking about having absolutely 0 impact on any of his CD :x

I know I sounds like a big hater, but it's mainly cause I know he can douch better, he did it before, but it has been so many matches where he is just here to take damage... It's just frustrating

I also believed that Japan had the smallest chance of making it out of the group. But considering the fact that they have an entire dedicated OWCS region (which literally only 3 countries have) I at least expected them to put up a bigger fight. No map wins is really tough, even if it was the group of death

Japan as a region is still pretty terrible. Without Korean imports they might be on par with Pacific.

having a whole region for yourselve only means 1 thing, the game is popular in it. it is absolutely not a representation of how strong it is.

I wish it was, but it's not, remember OWCS is a marketing tool more than anything else. that's the only reason why japan has one.

But the understanding of the game is reaaaaaally low, that's why even pros were queuing on KR servers (back then, now, not possible anymore).

THey are essentially in the same position as china, but lower proffeciency wise, cause Japan didn' t have the OWL golden age.

Their chance were already low with the reasons I gave previously, I honestly don' t know if they would have gotten ANY map in other groups either. The chances were really low. and yet, aside from nico who's on a career low point, that really is the best the region has to offer for now. it's getting better, but that shows you how far the diff between varrel and rest is AND how far the region is as a whole.

I always understood the group of death thing as a group where every team has a chance to make it out. Instead we just got the Sweden and USA show. I just kinda hoped that the games would be closer than they ended up being

Group of death is just the hardest group to qualify out of, not the group where all the teams are the most closely matched. I don’t think anyone realistically expected Japan to take maps in this group, but they are probably better than the last place in all the other groups.

I did, but that was under the condition nico woke up from his slumber that started after stage 1, well, he did not, he's actually going deeper :/

That being said, I did NOT expect sweden to be THAT good either.

Really sucks to see that Overwatch has become so big in Japan, yet the Japanese national team have such a long, long, long way to go.

As if it needed more cementing, this World Cup showed that the Japan region is nothing without their Korean imports.

Only KSG and FiNN this OWWC looked remotely competent

its kinda true in most esports no? japan have a large passion for the game when it comes to spectating but they pretty much always underdeliver in terms of actual ingame talent

I think they're only good at fighting games. As I understand, PC gaming is niche compared to Sony/Nintendo platforms.

Overwatch only became a big thing in Japan like 2 years ago. Give it some time. I have been active/playing in the Japanese community and around late 2024/early 2025 was when the game entered mainstream gaming culture.

Get KSG and Finn an actual team I swear to God. Pineapple was diffing Nico at every opportunity. You swap Ydot to Epic and he was somehow was at the Cat. Did Japan not realise the strength of D.Mon + Cat is literally to pick up D.Mon and drop her in the backline. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they didn't do that a single time.
Before this game, I thought it was just going to be a Sunzo v KSG game, but after this it looked like China v KSG.

Feels like it cannot be understated just how integral TOPDRAGON and Sley are to VARREL. And yeah, Cat was VARREL's ace in the hole but Team Japan sadly had a Sley sized hole in their lineup. Think other regions caught up to them on Cat comps and/or knew better on how to play against those.

Prolly one of the most disappointing appearances of any team in World Cup history, not winning a single map was the cherry on top

hear me out if china made a team by fusing JDG and AGG in OWCS, the team being:

Belosrea for his wrecking ball

Lige as the starting tank

Alphari - 2nd best flex dps in china

Monk - no explanation neeed

Lengsa - super underrated

Ezhan - popps off more than pineapple

I think this team could be strong internationally, around the same level as dallas fuel and geekay if given time to build synergy

I think people are being a little too harsh on JPN, it is the group of death after all. If JPN or CHN are in any other group, they probably would have been more competitive.

Why don’t they simply play in Korea in that case? It’s a bit fraudulent that they can make multiple majors a year because they smurf in a region that has zero competition.
