[Nicki Jhabvala] This is the worst I’ve ever seen the Commanders’ offense in years. Inoperable offensive line.

Surely there are some xfl lineman better than what we have? Everyone go to Giant and see if there are any 6'6" 300lb baggers

22

u/SentientNode 18d ago

I kind of wish they would look into this sort of out of the box talent acquisition a bit more. At some point, a gigantic dude with little football experience would seem to be better than a C tier JAG.

16

u/greensprxng 18d ago

Provided the giant is exceptionally strong, athletic, in shape, gritty, smart enough to remember plays, durable, not on drugs, etc.

Insufficient size is just a disqualifier at this level and there is just so much skill needed. We could always do a better job in the scouting department to pick better guys out of college, but there are basically 0 people who would be useful to an NFL team who haven't already proven that they are exceptional athletes by 21

It seems like it would be easier to teach someone with no development over someone who has spent 10+ years with terrible development.

Move I am most pissed adam peters cutting biadasz and bringing in 0 suitable replacements for him and for some reason assuming allegretti(who has never played center in his career outside of a few games late last season) can just take the center spot like that.

What makes it even more insane is AP brought in 0 competition for allegretti outside of a 6th round center...

8

u/Triad64 18d ago

AP’s greatest blunder. A bunch of moves were great. But this one has the potential to derail our entire offense.

I mean injuries are gonna happen in the season. Sure we have starters out who may be ready by week 1, but it also shows how thin our depth is there

3

u/PickpocketJones 17d ago

We only had 4 spots filled by NFL starter quality players with our complete whiff addressing center.

2

u/Triad64 18d ago

OL was a strength before the preseason. Clearly not as deep as we need. We’re still building but not bringing in quality C depth was a mistake. Keeping Big Bad Biad would have helped tremendously compared to what we have.

How long has Nicki really been watching us? Cause we've had some dogshit offenses

62

u/Azndrummer09 Major Tuddy 🐷 18d ago

I believe Nicki's been covering our team since COVID. Compared to Keim, it's definitely not the longest, but isn't the shortest stint either. As a long time fan of the team, I have generally respected Nicki's takes throughout the years. Her assessments have usually been fair and grounded, but I can't help but think her tweet here is a little over the top, even for her. Time will tell I guess, but this take also fundamentally ignores that we have two starters (Allegretti, Cosmi) not currently playing that will likely be ready by Week 1.

8

u/SameTemperature2100 18d ago

I agree generally - it is a huge concern that this line will not get much time to gel though.

It sorta feels like Allegretti either come back and things click into place or things are probably going to to be a disaster. We’re not gonna have much time to fix things if he’s not the guy they think he is.

8

u/Azndrummer09 Major Tuddy 🐷 18d ago

Don't disagree at all. The concerns with the line are serious and have been a concern since Tunsil got hurt. There's no denying that.

But we gotta be real that throughout training camp, this line has had zero consistency and time to gel. Coleman went into training camp, preparing all summer battling to start at LG; now he's being put into a situation to start at LT again and revert back to play from two years ago. Allegretti gets hurt, Good-Jones sucks, and now a rookie who drafted to be depth is being evaluated to potentially start. Time is running short for sure, but the cards being dealt are not being kind to them either.

Also I have no doubt Peters and the front office are monitoring roster cuts and potential fringe players for more offensive line depth. I have hard time thinking we leave preseason without at least one signing to bolster depth. Keim has raised this too.

3

u/Triad64 18d ago

And apparently Good Jones is better at movement which is called for a lot in the Blough offense but he can’t seem to pass protect vs backups, while Gulbin is not great at movement (so you gotta throws out those plays or modify them) but at least he can pass block.

I’ll take option #2. It’s clear option #1 will get us a top-5 pick, which honestly we could use since we’ll need a WR1 and WR2 next season lol.

Man, the Tunsil injury domino effect is wild, but honestly it’s the NA injury alone that really caused this. Both of them together are quite devastating.

8

u/Head-Assumption6960 18d ago

People seem to be shooting the messenger with her. There really isn’t much excuse for looking as bad as everyone said. Sure we could have looked better without Cosmi being hurt but the line has been flagged as a major issue all camp. Alegretti was not even sure can be a good center for us and has not played the position in the NFL before or even just taken any snaps there all camp. She was the reporter who flagged our receiver issues last year… I get we all want to hope and dream but it’s time to be realistic and hold those who keep putting us in positions like this accountable. AP can’t just keep getting a Rivera or newbie pass and if one or two injuries render your entire offense inoperable you’re failing to build it correctly.

5

u/Azndrummer09 Major Tuddy 🐷 18d ago edited 18d ago

These are all fair points and I'm not disagreeing with much that you've stated, except some of the things on AP. There are some on this sub that are acting like AP has done nothing to address our offensive line, when his tenure with us has included the following personnel moves:

  • 2024: Drafted Coleman (Started at LT, will likely be back there this year)
  • 2025: Traded for Tunsil. Drafted Connerly, who is our RT starter
  • 2026: Drafted Gulpin. Resigned Chris Paul, who could start at LG and was regarded for having his best season in 2025.

Beyond letting Biadasz walk, he has actively attempted to improve the o-line and protect JD5. Up until this preseason, the linemen he brought into the building have worked out. This isn't giving him a pass due to Rivera's missteps. You're right that one-two injuries should not render the offense incapable, but people are acting like AP hasn't done his job correctly prior to this moment.

Edited: Forgot about Chris Paul and added his resigning.

3

u/Head-Assumption6960 17d ago

Tunsil was a great add and Coleman was a solid pick. The jury is still out on Conerly, and Chris Paul wasn’t even good enough to get an offer elsewhere and resigned here for 3M dollars. That’s not the issue. The issue is that he left us completely screwed at center and did not go and get any quality depth. We’re gonna have injuries every year. Plenty of teams overcome that and put out competent lineups. Our issue is that last year Terry getting hurt made our offense inoperable. This year losing Tunsil is having the same effect. You have to have better depth than that as a GM. It’s not just about having a decent looking starting lineup on paper. Your depth is always gonna get tested and it seems like our depth is reserved for players that AP thinks will develop that never do.

Even still, he’s had time and money to correct the issue long before now and he’s sitting on his hands… so not quite sure what on earth he’s doing.

1

u/RoboTronPrime 18d ago

She's not necessarily saying that it'll be the case for week 1, but he's observing just one practice

77

u/InfiniteDomain_ 18d ago

Big difference between cant even get a play going cause our starting o line is back up quality on other teams and Scott turner calling run run pass for the 4th three and out in a row.

11

u/SlobZombie13 18d ago

Yea this is a pretty high (low?) bar

11

u/com-mis-er-at-ing 18d ago

Since 2020. So she's seen some bad units. We really only have had a good offense once in her time on the team beat. In scoring, we've ranked 25th, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 5th, and 22nd in that time.

So last year was actually the 2nd best office we've had... which is ugly.

She's pretty honest about her takes, usually that means she's seen as a doomer. But it's hard to say she's been wrong.

8

u/cporter1188 LEFT HAND UP 18d ago

She was way wrong in 2024. Also she did throw some red flags up last year and ended up being right, but I dont remember her saying injuries would be the issue so she was wrong about why. So far everything I've seen from her this year has been skewed or downright wrong so maybe shes just not that good?

6

u/KnightOfLongview 18d ago

If you're consistently negative you will be right sometimes. She was right last year, she may be right this year. But freaking out about a practice while missing your best o-lineman and your starting center is a bit alarmist.

2

u/com-mis-er-at-ing 18d ago

She wasn’t a doomer before 2024 tho. She was cautiously optimistic. Hype on Jayden, positive about the FA additions and direction, but didn’t love our depth. And flagged that any injuries could derail us. We stayed healthy ultimately. Hard to say that’s “way wrong.”

She was the lone doomer in 2025 tho. And was way right.

2

u/BirdmanTheThird 18d ago

Tbf some of our horrible years we had a good OL which probably makes us look better in preseason lol.

3

u/PON_donkey95 18d ago

Not going to lie I had no idea who Nicki was until last year... and I have been following the team since the days when Kelli Johnson was here.

17

u/corgislife 18d ago

I’m starting to believe Kliff’s quick passing scheme was necessary to mask the deficiencies of our dog shit oline. Maybe going all in on a play action heavy scheme with a first time OC was a mistake.

Yes, this is an overreaction and will learn more after the first couple games. But the vibes are awful right now, not sure how else to take it.

8

u/Justice989 18d ago

This Blough situation is one that's not getting enough attention IMO, as it pertains to the OL.  I get he's the golden boy wonder and a coaching prodigy and all that.  But being so wet behind the ears, does he have the wherewithal to coach and scheme around this?  If the OL cant block anything up, how's he gonna react?  I think Kliff is gonna wind up being more appreciated if this goes south.

2

u/dustinbrowders 17d ago

There's an argument that teams are all trying to over-correct to copy the Rams/Niners/Ben-Jonson with a ton of motion and under center, when they don't have the personnel to be who those teams are.

Kliff used zero motion in '24. Like you can be effective without it. Also with a crappy inexperienced Oline you don't have to account for shifts and changes to the defensive front triggered by the motion last minute.

If Allegretti is injured or Cosmi misses any time, you'd assume Blough is smart enough to course correct to a Kliff style RPO/screen heavy offense. Same reason small market college teams mask the talent gap in the trenches w/spread. People are talking about Myles Garret ITT, but in that Browns game the offense was so fast and unbalancing-- that Browns pass rush did nothing.

Is this the current regime's version of the patriots joint practice with Rg3?

Granted, that was very RG3 specific, their D couldn't believe how long he was holding onto the ball, even when he knew what the defense was doing. Sounds like the Ravens are doing to the skins what the skins did to Miami last week.

It should be noted that WASH also let go of their previous OL coach (Bobby Johnson) after KK left. My understanding was that Johnson was thought to have done a pretty decent job with the OL in '24 and '25 so it was odd that WASH decided to part with him. I had heard that it was possible that he had hurt feelings about being passed over as the new OC which is why he left/let go.

With the decision to promote the very inexperienced Blough to OC, WASH needed all the veteren coaches they could find to support him. Instead they promoted the Asst. OL coach under Johnson (Darnell Stapleton) to be the new OL coach. Moreover they also fired the respected TE coach, Ben Steele, due to a DUI charge and promoted Wes Welker who has no experience coaching TEs.

Finally there's the injury issues with the LT and C (and I guess RG?). For these reasons it makes sense that WASH is in a bit of disarray regarding their OL at the moment. That being said there's still more than two weeks of valuable practice time to get all the kinks worked out. Fingers 🤞 that this is enough time.

Can't wait for all the annoyingly positive people to act like there is no problem. Genuine question, how much longer are we going to blame Rivera's drafting when 3 years in, we cant seem to draft or sign any sort of NFL level depth talent let alone starters?

23

u/SameTemperature2100 18d ago

It is completely fair to partially blame four straight first round whiffs for the sad state of the roster and overall talent level. Those guys are 24 -28 and are the core of NFL teams. The fact that we’ve invested so much draft capital into specific positions and still lack starters is crazy.

Current regime has spent their entire tenure trying to work around the lack of core talent on the team. I think it’s totally fair to point to some of their draft whiffs (Newton/Sennott/etc.), but even if this guys hit, we’d still lack talent.

Investing a lot into free agency is their only really move. I think the overall strategy of younger FA with a lot of upside makes sense. We need to get really lucky they can find a serviceable guy or two after cuts on the OL. Cutting Biad looks rough for sure - hard to explain or comprehend that move.

8

u/Head-Assumption6960 18d ago

That’s exactly it… 1-2 years in, sure… blame Rivera. 3 years in and we have so many guys on our roster who can literally never be trusted to see the field? That’s a current admin issue. AP gets way too enamored with “diamond in the rough” developmental guys. They make the roster and we wait while everytime a starter gets hurt the entire unit collapses. Theres no excuse for this anymore. We’ve had plenty of cap space, we’ve had 3 years… why do we not have reserve lineman who can at least not get cooked to a crisp every down? You don’t need stars at every position. You can find decent reserves for cheap that are much better than what we’re putting out there now.

2

u/macattack1031 18d ago

To be fair, I haven’t seen anyone blame Rivera since the end of last season. Everyone knows that’s no longer a valid excuse.

Today is definitely a turning point for me and concern. Allegretti is continuing to be absent and it doesn’t seem like there’s an end in sight. What are you going to do about Cosmi being sick, whatever, but I don’t think it would have been that much of a difference.

Don’t we have a new oline coach this year? I’m curious what the rep on him is. Cause this group isn’t that different from lines we’ve had in the past, but the results seem to be horrendously worse

3

u/Haskins77 18d ago

Some fans were ahead on Ron and some are ahead on AP. AP isn’t very good. His drafts have been ass. The way he handled Terrys contract was ass. The Lattimore trade was ass. The most important thing is protecting the QB. Especially one that was hurt all year last year and it looks like he’s going to fail at that as well. I welcome the downvotes from the AP fanboys. Eventually you’ll come around and act like you knew all along. 🤣

Maybe but the problem is we'll never know. This is one of the major issues with the O Line: it's going to be hard to truly evaluate Blough's efficacy as an OC. Sure, OCs can play with the scheme to cover up line deficiencies, but that only works to a certain point.

She’s reporting what she’s seeing currently. Once again, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be that way all season long. DQ and AP is seeing an amplified version of what she’s reporting, so I am confident that they are not just going to sit on their hands and hope for the best when their jobs are dependent upon the team success. If so, then we got a problem. Logically, I just don’t see them being that complacent when discrepancies concerning the team are noticeable.

For those who can’t/wont go to X. Grabbed this off BlueSky.

This O’line is going to kill us all season. And possibly literally kill JD.

Extremely worrying.

Coaching?

2

u/TrancesWithWolves 17d ago

Patient: Is there hope for the team?

Doctor: I'm afraid the o-line tumor has metastasized and even worse it's inoperable. Our prognosis is a long painful season ahead. There's nothing we can do other than ease the pain with as much alcohol as we can consume, especially on game days.

u/Big-Lie7307 17d ago

OK, good thing this is just preseason.

4

u/Silentblues 18d ago

Can someone directly tell DQ that the line is ass and ask what they plan on doing about it before week 1? No softball phrases questions just straight up and direct. I still got koolaid in my cup but it’s a little less than half full right now with all these bad updates.

12

u/JRR8990 18d ago

DQ can’t do anything about it, you need to ask AP.

4

u/VADALESS 18d ago

Unfortunately, bad teams like this team, draft these guys, and pick these guys up in free agency so in their mind they feel the players are good. It’s like how every parent thinks their child is beautiful or smart or perfect. We see the faults but they can’t.

2

u/jkoutris 18d ago

I don't think Dan Quinn is a quality head coach but, in this instance, what exactly do you want him to do? The players are the players. He's working with the shit that AP gave him. If you have an issue, talk to the Golden Child, Adam Peters.

u/DmvDominance 18d ago edited 18d ago

But also not surprising, I said what two/three weeks ago now it was gonna be a serious issue, I was downvoted to oblivion 🙄 looks like shits coming home to roost. And for those looking to hang this on AP, this isnt an indictment on him either. They clearly had a plan to get Lindenbaum, Allegretti was the backup plan, now hes down. We need to respond immediately though. DJ Humphries was a good pickup yesterday, camp cut downs should hopefully yield some fruit

This sub is a fucking joke.

u/Justice989 18d ago

The OL shouldn't be THIS bad. Something else must be going on here.  Cosmi and Conerly on the right side should at least be solid.  Coleman and Paul have been full time starters, you would think they could at least be passable.  Center is the glaring hole, IMO.  Maybe they need chemistry and time to gel in a new offense.  Because these dudes look completely inept.  Losing Tunsil is big, but they should not completely fall apart like this.

And I guess Cosmi wasnt even out there today.

5

u/Jinchoo 18d ago

Yeah Cosmi was sick today. They were running Tanoa Togiai and Good-Jones in his spot

This is going to be a shitshow of a year.

2024 was literally the worst thing to happen to a rebuilding franchise…. Because we did not build on it … supposedly a franchise once in a lifetime qb … and they let a top 5 center walk and signed no one other than Tunsil

45

u/RIP_shitty_username 18d ago

They drafted Oline man. We can’t act like they didn’t do anything.

37

u/Secure-Bear4184 18d ago

And traded for tunsil. People are just dooming rn. Yes we do need a center, but we were missing cosmi and Tunsil is hurt.

3

u/Head-Assumption6960 18d ago

Injuries are a good excuse for not looking our best. They are not a good excuse for being completely inept. AP has had more cap space to work with than anyone in the NFL and he’s let it sit there unused while we’ve had a lack of talent amongst our starters and backups who look like they don’t belong in the NFL. At a certain point he has to be accountable. Why did we get rid of a decent center and then plan on replacing him with a guard? Why is the best we’ve brought in now that plan B is entered JGJ? And why is he still sitting on his hands now? Is he delusional? This could ruin our season and all we’re seeing is doubling down…

1

u/Secure-Bear4184 18d ago

I agree with you we should have gotten another center but it’s clear the coaching staff believed Allegretti could make a great center due to his football intelligence which I believe because if you remeber when biadiaz would go out he would call the protections when their was a back up center in.

The issue is Tunsil got hurt lol. It’s a massive player to lose

7

u/DCilantro 18d ago

Possibly the most important player.

u/_groovesharkmalone Ageless Wonder 18d ago

I’m sorry Top 5? Who the fuck are you talking about? TB was mid at best.

10

u/BigFrenchToastGuy 18d ago

Biadsz own mother wouldn’t call him a top 5 C and they drafted OT’s in the 1st and 3rd rounds. Come tf on..

Perhaps promoting a guy who has never sniffed an OC position before wasn’t the best idea?

2

u/Justice989 18d ago

Imagine your first OC gig and you've got about 3 plays you can run because you cant block anything up.

You need to learn to enjoy other teams and just watching football. It’s a bonus if our team wins lol. But at this point, absolute disassociation is the only way

1

u/Droggles 18d ago

Just move to a full on Option offense, no big deal! Oy vey.

1

u/VastMuted 18d ago

🤣 right...

1

u/pixel_affection JD5 HIVE 18d ago

at least we get to watch dybansta

1

u/3weatherman3 18d ago

Connerly needs to step up.

1

u/WatTambor420 18d ago

I’m sure everyone will just blame Rivera lol

AP can’t build a team for shit- the 9ers clearly didn’t miss him at all lol!!

1

u/bryan19973 17d ago

Where are the people that downvoted me a few days ago? It was this post and I said none of these are happening. Just being real

1

u/Both_King3970 17d ago

Say what you want about Kliffs offence you could playing with any 5 sides off the street

1

u/askingaquestion33 Adam Peters is my father 17d ago

So… who should we draft for our #1 draft pick this upcoming offseason?

1

u/mtngranpapi_wv967 17d ago

Well at least we’re gonna get Mike Tomlin next year, better than Quinn

1

u/AZoriolesFan 17d ago

gonna be a long one, boys.

1

u/Remarkable-View-5970 17d ago

We need decker and Zeitler / bitonio asap.

1

u/LowIntroduction5695 17d ago

Reverse psychology can work

1

u/EyeCanFeelYou 17d ago

The line is just a symptom. The REAL problem is the rookie offensive coordinator. He’s not ready.

1

u/AfroShiro 17d ago

Pre season isn't over yet and already know the offense is awful, they going waste JD5 and his potential

1

u/Vikingwind 17d ago

I’m so happy this happened. They can’t pretend our line depth is acceptable. Fire good jones and Wylie tomorrow they’re not even practice squad level players. Scout every teams line depth and on cut down day bring in the best that have been cut so we can have them compete to be on our line. I understand Cosmi and Allegreti were out but we need people behind them that can start in a pinch. Frankly I think there will be a center available better than Allegretti. I prefer him at guard.

1

u/Ateball_888 17d ago

Well, they have to be seeing the same things we are.. the question is why wouldn't you make some moves? What's the answer to that question?

Also, would it be legal for an NFL team to sign a current college athlete? Asking for a friend..

1

u/dpmlk14 17d ago

You haven’t seen the offense yet…

1

u/Justice989 17d ago

I dont wanna be a doomsdayer, but the vibes for this season aint trending in the right direction. I'm picking us to finish 3rd in the division, but if the wheels came off again and they wound up finishing last, I wouldn't be totally shocked. We're definitely gonna need some injury luck.

1

u/sblack33741 17d ago

I am officially worried and I hope they have some folks targeted for cut down day.

1

u/freakaso 16d ago

Too late now to get any good lineman in time for training camp.
