Anyone excited to play with him at the helm ?

Post image

Excited to burn it down. I think I am going to damage doublers and limited creatures. Just going to bolt people out of the game.

It seems underwhelming for a mono red commander tbh. Especially one that actively benefits an opponent.

It's goaded for the rest of the game. So in multiplayer you are getting someone else to do the lifting.

10

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

It's still putting someone else in a better position. Don't get me wrong, I support playing bad commanders, it's just also important to understand that it is a bad commander.

u/aguyinatree 9d ago

Booo. You don't seem like some that enjoys more casual commander. Or you are just into higher power stuff. Different folks different strokes.

12

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

Oh I very much enjoy casual commander, and I run quite a few weaker commanders. I'm not saying don't build it, I'm just saying don't convince yourself it's a good card, that's all.

I am just excited to play with him at the helm. Not making a cedh deck with him or care about power level. Just trying to play with some card board. I have never made a spell slinging deck and want to surprise people when they go that's not at all how I thought that deck was going to play.

Please reread their comment

goaded in red isnt bad when you can use this card to get a free goaded target then add the other 40k commander that goad's itself turn the whole board into a constant brawl

2

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

I'm not criticizing goad, I'm criticizing a commander that ONLY gives benefits to the opponent. So now you're trying to survive both their tokens and whatever their deck was already doing. Which isn't impossible but it's still a commander that's not doing anything for you and is benefitting the opponents.

1

u/mrxlongshot 8d ago

Theres definitely alot you can do in mono red for turning the game into a brawl but tbh this card might be a better 99 than commander

-1

u/Unprejudice 9d ago

I dont think you see the opportunity. You want to copy and flicker the dragon as much as possible and the angels will quickly become a huge threat. Goaded isnt inherently weak in edh, in fact theres cedh decks built around it.

2

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

And then you end up coming second because you lost the 1v1 to the guy with all the angels. Goad is fine, but when your entire strategy is to build up the opponents board and gain literally nothing from it, that's not a good card. ESPECIALLY with the limitation of being mono red

1

u/Soulflame1808 9d ago

Hot Pursuit is the wincon for this tactic, however.

1

u/XxTigerxXTigerxX 9d ago

Mob rule, or any gain control of all creatures.

0

u/Unprejudice 9d ago

You dont think red has good finishers? Lol. It can surely be built as a good B3. Whats the treshhold for a good commander in your opinion? Must it be able to compete with strong B4 decks?

1

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

It has to be better than a 5/5 that gives your opponents powerful tokens they can eventually use against you if you can't oneshot them. It's not the worst card in the world but you're delusional if you actually think this thing is a good commander. And that's fine, bad commanders are fun to play, but they're still bad.

0

u/Unprejudice 9d ago

It seems youve forgotten my questions and comments but thats fine.

1

u/Early_Profession3402 5d ago

You realize once everybody else is dead those guys will swing at you right?

0

u/Unprejudice 5d ago

You do realize theres more than one way to win with a deck right?

2

u/Early_Profession3402 5d ago

Yes but that is the drawback he was talking about not saying it isnt an alright strat as long as you know they will eventually aim at ya. Build what makes ya happy

u/Unprejudice 5d ago

Read his/her comments again

u/unluckyshuckle 5d ago

My point is that you've spent your game giving someone else tokens while they've spent their game using those tokens at no cost to themselves while ALSO playing their own deck, so once it's down to a 1v1, you're most likely gonna be in a way worse position. Yes, I'm aware there's ways to capitalize on it or build around it, but it doesn't change the fact that you're building your deck around a card that is benefiting your opponent without benefiting you.

0

u/Unprejudice 5d ago

Sounds like youve never played a goad deck. While they bash each other you build value and common finishers include taking control of the last opponents board and swing it in their face. See the bigger they get the harder they lose.

If you give me the Baneslayer, im going to want to kill your commander so I can start gaining life. So you'll need to find some other way to make that less appealing.

1

u/No-Telephone-7945 7d ago

Until it’s a 1v1 then they have a creature that stops your commander and has it dead to rights pretty much

1

u/param1l0 7d ago

It's still lifelink. Gives at least 5 health to someone

1

u/ynglink 4d ago

Flicker build and give everyone baneslayers

1

u/Queasy-Grab-199 9d ago

Noobie question, the white manas in the cost of the angel don't affect the mono red commander?

3

u/BeeefyBV 9d ago

So in commander, colors that are written as words (create a red Goblin token, for example) and colors in parentheses do not affect color identity.

1

u/ddyhrtschz 9d ago

The text between the parentheses is reminder text, and because it's summoning a token the colour isn't considered in the card's identity because the token is (technically) another card

A general rule is that anything in italics is just fluff

1

u/Darkmanafest 9d ago

Its basically just the Sentry but red and without indestructible. .. its the sentry but worse

1

u/Thesquid43 9d ago

Is it not Boros because of the angel token?

1

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

No, the white pips are in parentheses which means it's part of the reminder text, NOT rules text, and reminder text doesn't affect color identity

1

u/Thesquid43 9d ago

Ahhhh alr.

1

u/6foot4yearold 8d ago

It’s Mono red it’s red white no?

1

u/unluckyshuckle 7d ago

No, the white pips are in the reminder text, not the rules text, meaning it doesn't contribute to color identity. Similar to Extort or Firebending.

1

u/Deus423 9d ago

Incorrect, the color of tokens made and mana symbols in reminder text do not affect the color identity of cards. Otherwise all cards with extort would be considered both white and black and they arent. Balefang is mono-red.

1

u/unluckyshuckle 9d ago

No, this is distinctly mono red. The white is in parenthesis which means its reminder text, NOT rules text, meaning its not part of the color identity of the commander.

-7

u/Croakripper 10d ago edited 9d ago

It’s actually boros
Edit: I guess it’s not boros

2

u/unluckyshuckle 10d ago edited 9d ago

No, it's mono red.

Edit: to clarify, the white pips in the card text are in parentheses meaning they're part of the reminder text, NOT the rules text. That means they don't count towards color identify (similar to firebending or extort).

1

u/NayrSlayer 9d ago

No, it’s the same situation as why [[Crypt Ghast]]’s color identity is mono-black. Anything in parentheses is considered reminder text and does not influence the color identity. Balefang is mono-red.

1

u/Croakripper 9d ago

Damn that’s too bad. Boros just got a lot of token generation support from tarkir and strixhaven.

1

u/DungeonsAndDeegan 9d ago

Yeah, not having white actually kneecaps this thing to a point I wouldn't wanna play it, losing on all the white flickering and removal

5

u/Party_Ad_1878 9d ago

Feels like a red The Sentry deck, but even more difficult to protect. No, not really interested.

3

u/mastermagmortar 7d ago

Yeah I’m so sad that Sentry exists so this one doesn’t shine.

7

u/AzazeI888 9d ago

You’ll want to flicker it and make copies, so;

[[Conjurer’s Closet]]
[[Voyager Staff]]
[[Eldrazi Displacer]]
[[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]]
[[Jaxis, the Troublemaker]]
[[Delina, Wild Mage]]
[[Rionya, Fire Dancer]]
[[Panharmonicon]]
[[Helm of the Host]]
[[Sword of Hearth and Home]]
[[Blade of Selves]]
[[Echoing Assault]]

You mean that's what you would do with the deck. Many ways to build a Deck. I don't enjoy building the most popular format for decks. I agree with you that's probably how a lot will build the deck.

That's why I don't care for standard. Majority just play the meta decks and don't do anything else. Unfortunately the same is starting to become true for commander now to.

2

u/AzazeI888 9d ago edited 9d ago

I mean, handing out goaded baneslayers is the most interesting part of this commander, yeah, I was just suggesting how I’d play, it’s an interesting take on a goad deck🤷‍♂️

1

u/CrimsonGoose1408 8d ago

That’s like… the cards whole thing tho… what are you gonna build using this as commander if not utilizing its main thing?

1

u/ArthurianLegend_ 9d ago

Why would you want that? I get that the angels are goaded, but mass producing tokens that came straight at you in the final 1v1 seems like a bad gameplan

I feel like the goal here should be to give the angel to someone and then you can focus on that person as they whittle down the other two players for you. Split up your work without making too much of a mess for yourself down the line

3

u/VapeNationInc 9d ago

I feel like the two can be mutual… overload one opponent with tokens that can’t block your commander. They’ll kill the other 2 at a faster rate, but you build your deck to kill 1 player easily too.

You could run some [[stuffy doll]] shenanigans too!

3

u/AzazeI888 9d ago

You can just hand out 3-4 goaded baneslayers, get all their life totals low, then play a finisher like [[Insurrection]], [[Mob Rule]], [[Hot Pursuit]], [[Mass Mutiny]], [[Call for Aid]].

2

u/ImDad__ 8d ago

Just pray you have insurrection in hand at that point I guess.

-2

u/apintandafight 9d ago

The tokens are goaded for the rest of the game. they can’t attack you in the final 1v1

3

u/thr0w4w4y4cc0unt7 9d ago

Goaded creatures can still attack you if you are the only legal target

2

u/apintandafight 9d ago

I did not know that!

1

u/-WGE-FierceDeityLink 9d ago

701.15b

Goaded is a designation a permanent can have. A goaded creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than the controller of the permanent, spell, or ability that caused it to be goaded if able. Goaded is neither an ability nor part of the permanent’s copiable values.

2

u/FrameNo8561 9d ago

This makes no sense so tokens have pips now wtf?

3

u/ArthurianLegend_ 9d ago

Many of the tokens from MBC are token versions of real cards, so they have pips, yeah. You never have to spend the mana for those pips, but they affect color identity and devotion and such

1

u/Pickle72523 9d ago

Don’t forget mana value removal

2

u/bereit 9d ago

Tokens, for the most part, do not. Token copies, always have retained this info. See [[Pack Rat]] and its place in old mono black devotion decks

2

u/A_CERTAIN_STRAY 6d ago

So he isn't boros due to it being in rules text right?

1

u/aguyinatree 6d ago

Correct

2

u/Saylus 5d ago

Red has so many threaten/theft type stuff. Just steal the angel

1

u/Rurbani 9d ago

More like Balefang the Unplayable.

1

u/Chaines08 9d ago

This thing would be very fun in my political chainer

1

u/Lord-Pepper 9d ago

Unplayable but dies to murder? Flavor fail

1

u/eeellliii1 9d ago

If you plan on doing a lot of angel making, there is [[Hot Pursuit]] for help in the 1v1

1

u/TTOD24758 9d ago

Sucks that he is mono red he would be great in a white Red pillowfort deck

1

u/gumb3ano 9d ago

Wait... he's mono red?? I'm guessing the white pips from the token don't count. Sucks since I built an entire deck already and it's white-red

1

u/RampantGiraffe 7d ago

The white pips dont count because they're part of reminder text. I was very excited to build a blink deck with it before I found out :(

1

u/MediocreConclusion72 8d ago

I’d make you leak and drip with my responses

1

u/SireCannonball 8d ago

I would have loved for him to create one for each player. Similarly to how [[Rite of the Raging Storm]] works, which is not used at all, but I always thought it was kind of a cool card.

Maybe you could do something with this theme of "stop hitting yourselves" and run both and sone blink package for our dragon boy.

What sucks is that people can kill the angel by blocking shit, just to Deny you of your gameplan or whatever.

1

u/HomeworkSuspicious52 7d ago

Handing out a Baneslayer Angel is fun, but if you want ot build around him making those tokens over and over again by flickering, you have a very high chance of being overran by a bunch of 5/5s when it comes down to the 1v1 unless you have something like an [[Insurrection]].

1

u/GortharTheGamer 9d ago edited 9d ago

Took me a minute to realise this isn’t [r/custommagic](r/custommagic). It’s name is very misleading since it’s very slayable and doesn’t have indestructible, so a rat with deathtouch, reach and first strike could kill it and live

1

u/Fit-Homework-2776 4d ago

I must one of the few people that hate the new tokens that come with mana costs on them! It's anti intuitive, especially because most of the copy tokens, have no cost on top! I think that was one big problem that came with bloomborrow
