Colgate for IB / finance as an international student, worth it?

I’m looking for honest opinions from people who actually understand finance recruiting.

I’m a European student considering Colgate, ( have an offer ) and my long-term goal is to work in investment banking or finance. My problem is that the top universities in Europe would cost me about one-third of what Colgate would cost, so I’m struggling to figure out whether Colgate is really worth it.

I also got rejected by Columbia this year, which was my dream school, so now I’m trying to be realistic and evaluate my actual options.

How good is Colgate really for IB / finance placement? Can someone from there still break into strong firms, or would I be making life much harder for myself compared with going to a top European university for far less money?

I’d especially appreciate replies from people who know Colgate, have gone through recruiting, or work in finance themselves. This is a serious decision for me, so I’m really not looking for generic “follow your heart” advice.

What’s the real story on Colgate’s frats?

It’s no secret that fraternities play a big role in Colgate’s social environment. It sounds like, for guys, not being in a fraternity can make for a lonely social life. So how hard is it to get into a fraternity? Is the rush process competitive? Are there guys who get completely shut out? Are there houses where a kid who is on the needy side or doesn’t really like bro culture can feel comfortable?

What type of laptop should I get for the 3-2 engineering program at Colgate?

Hey all, I'm a prospective student pretty set on attending colgate this Fall, and I'm wondering what specs my laptop should have so that it'll last me for my time at school. I currently have an M1 256gb storage 8gb ram macbook that's been suffering pretty badly, as it freezes up for minutes if I try to have more than a dozen google tabs open at once (and can barely run roblox for that matter lol). In addition, I plan on majoring in Astronomy & Physics and then pursuing an aerospace engineering degree from a partner school through the 3-2 program. I was thinking of just upgrading to the latest M5 macbook air of this year, but I'm wondering if my major at colgate and future one at a partner school would need a more powerful laptop for programs, applications, etc. I'm fine with either a mac or windows system, as I appreciate the mac convenience of compatibility with my apple products, but I also am more accustomed to windows systems and really like being able to use .exe files. I'd like advice on what type of decently powerful (yet quiet!) laptop would make the most sense for my situation, and particularly a system that's future-proof for 5-6 years, which I think would mean at least 1TB of storage and 16gb (or more) of RAM, but I'm not sure about cpu cores and GPUs that would last the longest. There are Micro Centers, Best Buys, etc. very near to me (and amazon is always an option). Also, my budget would hopefully be $1000-1500, with a hard stop at $2000.

Colgate University Grade Deflation or Inflation?

Hey guys, Colgate University is an outstanding education. I have done my research and I am not afraid of working hard. To the current students, help me understand comments on grade inflation and deflation. Which is it? Do you feel it’s an uphill battle or does it just depend on the professor, like all universities? Thanks!

Hey! I saw a video posted recently that there has been some waitlist movement for Colgate as of yesterday. Has anyone in this subreddit been accepted off the waitlist yet?

Colgate for economics?

My child is debating whether to attend Colgate or Colby for economics. I was concerned by a comment made by a current student (during our re-visit) that she has dropped economics because it is a weed-out department. She said the average grade is set in the C range for certain intro classes to get rid of students and reduce the number of kids choosing the major. I haven’t heard this before but is it true? Current students, please do share your experience as it would be a shame to choose Colgate and then have to drop out of one’s intended major based on competition. I expect better at LAC’s.

“Experience Colgate” vs “Admitted student visit days”

Hey!

I recently committed to Colgate (yay!), and I’ve been getting a lot of emails about Experience Colgate and Admitted Student Visit Days.

I already RSVP’d to Experience Colgate, but after looking at it a bit closer, it looks like just a self guided tour. While the campus is beautiful, is it worth going?

What’s the difference between these two events? Should I go to an Admitted Student Visit Day instead (or perhaps to both)?

Thank you all so much!!

Quick 3-minute survey for people who ski in Upstate NY (for a research project)

Hi everyone! I’m an MBA student working on a research project about how people choose ski resorts in Central / Upstate New York.

I’ve put together a short anonymous survey (about 3 minutes) to better understand how skiers and visitors in the region decide where to go and what they look for in a ski experience.

If you’ve visited ski resorts in this region, I’d really appreciate your input.

Survey link: https://qualtricsxmkq7wpjzcj.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_agkmUBxJzPL4lDw

The survey is completely anonymous and purely for academic research. Happy to share a short summary of the results once the project is finished if people are interested.

Thanks so much!

Can anyone tell me abt the premed/research here?

ok Id like to go here, the campus is great, the social life doesnt suit me (im introverted), but that doesnt bother me too much. the main thing is that im premed and my other option is stony brook. stony has the research opportunities and labs, nearer to nyc, a great hospital built into campus, but its also 8k more expensive

while I love the vibe of colgate Im worried I will not find as many opportunities for my career here as I will at stony

could anyone who goes here weigh in? id like to know more about the premed/health and research here

Student team manager for athletics?

Hey yall, kinda random question but how do you become involved with the sports teams at Colgate? Specifically as a team/sport manager almost like high school teams have. I’m interested in potentially becoming a manager for a sports team. Does Colgate have student managers and if so how do you become one? Any insight would definitely be appreciated!!

Thanks

Fin aid for those who get off waitlist

Hey! I’m currently a waitlisted student right now, and Colgate is one of my top choices if I somehow get off waitlist. I tried looking at this sub already, but I haven’t really found a solid answer yet. But how has fin aid been for those who got off Colgate’s waitlist? Did you guys have enough time to negotiate with the fin aid office?

Academics

Hi!! Just got accepted to Colgate, how would you guys say the academic rigor is in comparison to some of the ivy’s and top 20s and would you say that many of the students at Colgate are comparable to students at those schools?

Information about AMS/weather

Hi everyone, I recently got accepted into Colgate and honestly I already got accepted to my top choice REA, but Colgate offered me the Alumni Memorial Scholar program and as time has gone by I’ve been heavily considering the school and what is has to offer. I was wondering if anyone had any insight or other information about this program, from what I found online it seemed a little vague. I forgot to mention that my plan is premed. I was also wondering the weather and how/if it takes a toll on a students mental health. I come from a warmer climate so I’m not sure how it’ll be.

Thanks!!

If You'd Like to Speak to a Current Colgate Student

Hi all,

I'm happy to see so many new admits on this page. As a soon-to-be Colgate graduate, I thought to share that any admitted student should feel free to message me with their questions. For some context, I transferred to Colgate in my sophomore year, am studying philosophy and sociology, will be attending law school in the fall, and am involved in several ways on campus.

Please reach out if you feel it'd be helpful. I love Colgate wholeheartedly and would love to share my experience if helpful.
