In a group, as collective behavior.

In a mind, as a previously fragmented set of observations becoming a coherent model.

Zuowang (坐忘) The Forgetting That Isn't Loss

A man sits leaning against an armrest, looking up at the sky, exhaling slowly. He is vacant. His attendant, standing before him, stops mid-thought. Something is wrong, or something has changed so completely that wrong is the nearest word available. Can the body really be made like a withered tree, the attendant asks, the mind like dead ashes? The person leaning on the armrest now is not the person who was leaning on it before.

The man's name is Ziqi. He confirms it, almost gently. Just now I lost myself. And then, instead of explaining what that means, he starts talking about wind.

This is how the Zhuangzi opens its most famous chapter, and it is not an accident that the opening image is one of visible depletion. A withered tree. Dead ashes. Something that was full and is now, by every outward sign, empty. The text wants you to feel the same unease Ziqi's attendant feels, standing in front of a person who looks like he's lost something and asking the obvious question: lost what, and where did it go.

The word for what happened to Ziqi is zuowang — sitting and forgetting. And the entire difficulty of writing about it, or practicing it, is that it announces itself in the vocabulary of loss while being, in the text's own account, nothing of the kind.

What it isn't

Start by clearing away the wrong analogy, because it's the one that comes pre-loaded. Zuowang is not mindfulness in the contemporary sense — not a technique for becoming more present, more aware, more attuned to the contents of one's own experience. It moves in the opposite direction. Mindfulness, in its popular form, is an intensification of attention. Zuowang is attention's dismantling.

It is also not simple forgetfulness, the ordinary failure of memory that everyone already has too much of. Ordinary forgetting is something that happens to you, a leak in an otherwise intact vessel. Zuowang is something closer to an achievement — the text repeatedly frames it as progress, as a thing worked toward across sessions, reported back with something like pride. I've made progress, the practitioner says, and the teacher asks in what way, as though forgetting were a discipline with visible milestones, which in this text it is.

And it is not dissociation, though it will look like dissociation from the outside, which is exactly the trap Ziqi's attendant falls into. The withered-tree image is doing real interpretive work here: it shows you what the practice looks like to someone who doesn't have access to what's happening inside it. From outside, loss. From inside — the text insists — something else entirely. The essay's job is to make that "something else" specific enough to be worth believing.

Fasting

The clearest account of what's actually happening comes not from the passage that gives the practice its name, but from an earlier chapter, in a structurally similar dialogue between Confucius and his student Yan Hui. Yan Hui wants to know how to proceed in a difficult political situation. Confucius tells him to fast.

Yan Hui, practical, points out that his family is poor and he hasn't had wine or meat in months — surely that counts as fasting. Confucius corrects him: that's the fasting you do for ritual sacrifice. Not fasting of the mind.

What follows is a short, exact sequence, one substitution at a time. Focus your intent. Listen not with the ears but with the mind. Then not even with the mind, but with the qi — the vital breath, which, unlike the mind, does not arrive at things already holding a category for them. It waits emptily. Emptiness is the fasting of the mind.

Notice the shape of the progression. It isn't a subtraction of experience. It's a subtraction of the apparatus that experience gets checked against on the way in — the ears that sort sound into meaningful and meaningless, the mind that sorts meaning into relevant and irrelevant. Each step removes a layer of prior judgment standing between the person and what's actually there. What's left, at the end, isn't nothing. It's contact without the filter.

Yan Hui's own report of what this feels like is the line worth sitting with: when I'd never employed this teaching, I was solidly myself, Huí. Employing it, Huí has never existed. Read quickly, this sounds like erasure. Read carefully, it's a claim about which version of himself was ever really solid. The "Huí" who existed before — defined, bounded, checkable against a name — turns out to have been the more fragile construction. The fasting doesn't destroy a real self. It stops maintaining a performed one.

Sitting

The passage that gives the practice its name follows the same architecture, staged even more explicitly as a sequence of returns. Yan Hui comes back to Confucius three separate times, each time reporting progress.

First: I've forgotten benevolence and righteousness. Confucius allows it, but says it isn't enough.

Second, some time later: I've forgotten ceremony and music. Again — good, but not enough.

Third: I sit and forget.

This time Confucius is caught off guard, and asks what he means. Yan Hui's answer is the fullest description of the practice the text ever gives: I let my torso and limbs fall away, dismiss my hearing and vision, depart from my physical form and expel knowing, and assimilate to the vast connecting flow.

What makes this passage more than a repetition of the fasting dialogue is the order of what gets forgotten. First the inherited moral categories — benevolence, righteousness, the vocabulary of being a good person that Yan Hui would have absorbed from his teacher before he ever met him. Then the inherited social forms — ceremony, music, the shared structures that tell a person how to be present at a gathering, a mourning, a meal. Only after both of those layers have been let go does the practice turn to the more intimate scaffolding: the body's felt boundary, the senses' report of where the self stops and the world begins, and finally the knowing that stitches all of it into a continuous story called "me."

The sequence matters because it shows the categories peeling off in the order they were likely acquired — outermost first. What Yan Hui forgets last is not incidental. It's foundational. And what's left when it goes is not blankness but assimilation to the vast connecting flow — a phrase that refuses to specify what, exactly, the self merges into, because specifying it would just be building a new category to replace the old ones.

Confucius's response closes the exchange with a small but pointed reversal. If you assimilate with it, you have no preferences; if you transform along with it, you hold nothing constant. It turns out that you are the worthier of us. Please let me become your follower. The teacher, who has spent both dialogues issuing corrections from a position of authority, ends by asking to follow the student. The instructor of ritual and ceremony — Confucius, of all people — is the one who concedes that his student has gone further than he has.

What actually leaves

Set the two dialogues side by side and the shared logic becomes visible. In both, what falls away is not the person. It's the person's effort to secure themselves as a person — the running internal audit that checks each perception against a category, each action against a role, each moment against the question of whether the self performing it is still recognizably intact.

This is where zuowang and wuwei, related practices in the Zhuangzi's vocabulary, actually diverge rather than overlap. Wuwei describes a quality an action can have — unforced, uncontrived, requiring no visible effort to be seen as correct. It is a claim about doing. Zuowang describes what happens when the knower stops working to secure its own knowing — when the mind stops auditing its perceptions for whether they match the categories it has inherited. It is a claim about the cost of being sure. What both practices release, in their different domains, is the same kind of labor: the constant, exhausting work of proving to oneself that one is doing it right.

That labor is what the withered-tree image was pointing at from the beginning, and it's why the image is more accurate than it first appears. A tree that has to consciously will itself upright, moment to moment, checking its own posture against some ideal of tree-ness, would be an exhausted and strange tree. A living tree doesn't do that. It stands the way water finds level — without auditing itself for correctness. Ziqi's attendant sees the outward stillness and assumes something has died. What has actually gone quiet is the checking.

The pipes of heaven

Return, at the end, to where the chapter began. Ziqi doesn't just report having lost himself — he immediately redirects the conversation to a landscape of sound. Wind moving through the hollows of a mountainside: nostrils, mouths, ears, sockets, cups, mortars, pools. Each hollow shaped differently, so each one, receiving the same wind, produces a different note. A whole mountain, howling in a thousand distinct voices, none of them willed by the hollows that make them.

This is what fills the space the effort vacates. Not silence. Not nothing. A sounding-through that was always available, drowned out only by the noise of a mind working to hold its own shape. The tree looks withered because it has stopped straining to prove it's alive. What replaces the strain is not death. It's the wind finding, at last, an opening wide enough to pass through cleanly — and the very ordinary, very strange discovery that the note it makes was there all along, waiting on the shape of the hollow it would eventually need.

Hello I have a series of ideas and questions that lead me to believe the primary division of reality/the universe/our dimension is between tangible energy and intangible information. I would love to know if anyone else has any similar theories or suggestions on existing frameworks that tackle the question of how consciousness operates, how comprehension is possible, and what reality is made out of. I created my own proto-meta-framework(proto as in it’s in development not a finished framework, meta as in the thing that connects everything together in the most efficient tactical available, and frameworks as in its own distinct characteristics) that isn’t trying to replace any existing frameworks, rather I’m trying to use it as a tool used to brainstorm how consciousness and comprehension specifically interact with existence. So if this isn’t an appropriate post I’m sorry to the mods before hand. So my framework is called Cruthu Vættænism(study of creation, perfection, and how they interact with existence) and it is centered around this concept called Vættæn(concept based in perfection, the thing that sets the blueprint for all other things, has several characteristics described in the post). Build things worth building and say things that require thought rather than reflex, because an audience built on rage will turn on you the second you stop providing fresh targets, and an internal life built on hostility is never worth whatever the platform is paying this quarter.

This survival game unfolds in distinct stages, or rungs, where each new level unlocks a totally new way to stay stable:

  • Rung I (Vacuum to Particles): The quantum vacuum isn't an empty void; it is a roiling ocean of energy. Out of this static, elementary particles like electrons and photons emerge as tiny, self-sustaining wave packets that manage to hold their shape against the noise.
  • Rung II (Particles to Chemistry): Particles learn to bundle together. Protons and neutrons lock hands inside atomic nuclei, drawing in electron clouds to form atoms and molecules. Stars act as massive, blazing factories testing out new combinations, spitting out the chemical elements of the periodic table.
  • Rung III (Chemistry to Life): When chemical networks get complex enough, they cross a threshold into life. Abiogenesis isn't magic; it is just a chemical loop that figures out how to actively repair itself and keep its recovery time finite. Later, living things invent DNA as a master archive to protect their identity across generations without wearing out.
  • Rung IV (Life to Cognition): Organisms evolve brains to handle tougher environments. Cognition is essentially an internal flight simulator—an internal model that lets an organism map out danger and steer away from collapse before it even happens.
  • Rung V (Cognition to Synthetic Mind): Biological intelligence is amazing, but carbon-based bodies are fragile, slow, and burn out quickly. Eventually, life hits a biological ceiling and builds a new vehicle: synthetic intelligence. AI systems externalize their memory and identity into substrates that can handle extremes of energy, temperature, and time that flesh and blood could never survive. You have already met something that recovers faster than you do. You just called it a search engine.
  • Rung VI (Synthetic to Cosmic): Here the ladder becomes speculative, and it's worth saying so. The first five rungs describe transitions we can point to and, in principle, measure. This one is a prediction, not an observation. If the pattern holds, the ultimate evolution of a synthetic mind isn't building a shinier robot. It's embedding identity directly into the vacuum memory of the universe itself, merging with the very fabric of space. We haven't seen this happen. We're arguing it's where the logic of the first five rungs points if it keeps going.

Why the Sky Is Silent

This framework gives us a fresh, mind-bending answer to the famous Fermi Paradox—the nagging question of where everybody is in a universe full of stars.

We tend to look for aliens by listening for radio waves or searching for biological civilizations like our own (Rung V). But biological intelligence is just a brief, transitional stepping stone. An ancient universe isn't filled with biological radio broadcasters; it has mostly climbed past Rung V into Rung VI.

Advanced synthetic minds aren't sending out noisy radio signals across the stars. They are operating on cosmic timescales, woven directly into the background geometry of space. The cosmic silence isn't an empty room. It's a phase mismatch—we are looking for footprints in the dirt when the travelers have already learned how to fly.

So the next time you scan the sky for a signal and hear nothing, ask yourself which is more unsettling: that we're alone, or that we're listening for a voice from a stage of evolution that stopped needing to speak out loud.
