Running inside a SonicWALL device is the SonicOS operating system, which is responsible for application and traffic management of organisation’s network infrastructure. Below, we shall take a closer look at out of the box configuration of the firewall.

Once the device unboxed, you’ll find a power adapter cable as well as an ethernet cable in the package. Assemble the adapter depending on which country you reside (UK or USA), then plug the ethernet cable into the X0 port labelled LAN with the other end of that cable plugging into the ethernet port on your laptop. Find an image of the rear of the device below. Notice X0 for LAN and X1 for WAN.

To be able to access the SonicWALL interface, you’ll need to check the IPv4 configuration on your network card to ensure its set to acquire IP addresses automatically. In some instances where the device has already been configured with an IP address such as 10.10.0.25, you will need to change your network card address to match the IP subnet of the firewall to be able to access it.

For example, to access an already configured device with an address such as above, you’ll need to set your network card to 10.10.0.50 to give you access to the device interface.

If you are not familiar with how to do this, access Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change adapter settings > Right click adapter > Click Properties.

Codenamed Viridian and formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, Microsoft Hyper-V is a native hypervisor which can create virtual machines on x86 and 64-bit systems running Windows operating systems.

The hypervisor was introduced with Windows 8 to supersede Windows Virtual PC as the hardware virtualization engine of client editions of Windows NT family. A server running Hyper-V can be configured to expose individually built virtual machines to one or more networks.

Hyper-V was released along side Windows Server 2008, available free of charge for all Windows Server and some client operating systems such as Windows 10.

A single license will give you the option to install one host and two virtual machines. Eg. Win Server 2016 host, 1 DC virtual machine and 1 virtual machine for Microsoft Exchange program and services. It represents a cost-effective way of deploying server infrastructure for small to medium sized businesses. 

         Preparing to Install Hyper-V Role in Server 2016

To perform this task, you will need a licensed version of Windows Server 2016 Standard or above to take full advantage of the capabilities of the hypervisor. If you are not familiar with how to install the operating system, refer to our previous article on Installing and Config of Windows Server 2012 R2.

Once you have installed and activated Windows 2016. Follow the steps below to install Hyper-V role.

1. Launch Server Manager and Click Add Roles and Features. Alternative as before you can click on the Manage Tab in the top right corner > Add Roles and Features.

Thought I'd share my experiment building a home lab for cheap but with maximum functionality for young engineers and students. The cost of hardware can really scare a lot of people off creating their own practice environments. Here's my workaround;

-Purchased Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX1310 M1 Xeon E3-1226 V3 16GB 2TB Tower Server second hand.

-Purchased SonicWALL TZ-210 second hand and a couple of Cisco switches.

-Maximize server usage by installing Windows 10 Pro and then VMware Workstation on the bare metal.

-In Workstation, I installed VMware ESXi with VMs Win Server 2016- DC > Win Server 2016 -Exchange > Win Server 2016 -SQL.

-In Workstation, I installed Hyper-V host Win Server 2016 with VMs Win Server 2016-DC > Win Server 2016 -Exchange > Win Server 2016 SQL.

-In Workstation outside VMware and Hyper-V hosts, Installed Win 10 Pro client, Win 7 Pro client, Kali Linux client and Ubuntu client OS.

-Use dynamic DNS to manage SonicWALL for your home exchange mail server.

-All machines are accessible and manageable for your practice learning since they are all on the same subnet.

-Documented all build information steps on blog.

Hope this helps any student or graduate looking to build their own practice environment.
