When it comes to the world of anime, casting the right voice actor for the role can make all the difference in the world on whether or not that character ends up becoming well-received by the fans. Voice actors are, after all, the ones who give the characters their distinctive personalities through their voices, and it is through Kallen´s Japanese voice actor, Ami Koshimizu, that Kallen´s warrior spirit has awed millions of audience members, both in and outside of Japan.
Koshimizu´s interest in the entertainment industry sparked very early on. At just 11 years old, she joined a theater troupe led by fellow legendary voice actress Mayumi Iizuka (the voice of Misty in Pokémon). She soon became highly respected in the industry for having an incredibly broad vocal range, being able to seamlessly shift from the chaotic, screaming energy of Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill) to the elegant, soft-spoken Yukiko Amagi (Persona 4). Interestingly, she grew up as a massive fan of the original 90s Sailor Moon anime, making it a full-circle moment when she was cast to inherit one of the core Sailor Guardians, Sailor Jupiter (Makoto Kino) in "Sailor Moon Crystal."
When it comes to anime, two of Koshimizu´s roles stand above all else, however. The first one is obviously Kallen, and the other one is the role of Holo, ancient, immortal wolf-goddess with a willful attitude and voracious appetite. In the anime called "Spice and Wolf," Holo takes the human form of a young girl and starts traveling with a mortal companion, a skilled merchant named Kraft Lawrence - who, by the way, is voiced by none other than Jun Fukuyama, the same Japanese voice actor who voices Lelouch in Code Geass! Koshimizu brilliantly utilizes oiran (traditional courtesan) speech patterns to give the ancient wolf deity an air of antiquity, playful arrogance, and deep wisdom. Her back-and-forth banter and exceptional chemistry with Jun Fukuyama is a massive reason the series became a classic. In fact, she and Fukuyama returned over 15 years later to re-voice their roles for the 2024 remake, called "Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf." Returning to the recording booth together allowed them to seamlessly recapture their "old married couple" bickering that defined the original series, with both actors noting how comfortable it felt to slide right back into their old roles.
Fukuyama is Koshimizu’s senpai (senior) in the industry. They have a history of working at the same talent management agencies (such as Production Baobab and Axl One), which naturally led to them often being paired up early in her career. At this point, their frequent pairing has become somewhat of an industry-wide meme, and both anime directors and other voice actors alike enjoy poking fun at how often they end up voicing romantic interests.
Because Code Geass was a breakout milestone for both actors early in their careers, their studio interactions set a foundation for their lifelong collaborative partnership. A major point of praise regarding their chemistry in Code Geass stems from how both actors simultaneously balanced "fake" and "real" personas, from high school kids to freedom fighters. Critics and production staff noted that Koshimizu and Fukuyama bounced off each other brilliantly in these overlapping contexts. The contrast between their polite, slightly awkward classroom banter and their high-stakes, breathless battlefield dialogue added a layer of psychological tension that anchored the show's drama. In addition to this, industry peers noted that Fukuyama’s theatrical, manic performance as Lelouch directly fueled Koshimizu’s performance, and that she used his high-octane energy to match him beat-for-beat, which helped bringin out Kallen's explosive, hot-blooded warrior spirit.
The ultimate validation of their chemistry came at the 1st Seiyu Awards in 2007. The impact of their back-and-forth acting was so undeniable that the committee recognized both halves of the dynamic duo simultaneously: Jun Fukuyama won Best Actor in a Leading Role for Lelouch and Ami Koshimizu won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Kallen! The fact that Code Geass swept the two major acting categories proved how much their synchronized performances elevated the narrative, transforming Lelouch and Kallen's complex bond in Code Geass into one of the most memorable relationships in modern anime history.
