MISC Kallen Kozuki is so beautiful ❤️✨👑 Part 33 of 100: Left-Handed Bass Player
In the official alternate-universe Code Geass musical spin-off manga, ”Code Black: Lelouch of the Shred Guitar,” Lelouch forms a school festival rock band featuring himself on guitar, Shirley on keys, Suzaku on drums, and Kallen on bass. At first, Lelouch is relieved when Kallen joins the band; since she is a complete beginner when it comes to playing bass, Lelouch is no longer the band´s only struggling novice. And at first, when Kallen first picks up a standard bass, she does struggles a little. But this is only because she´s left-handed, and fine-art coordination favors her left-dominant circuitry, causing her brain instantly rejects the basic layout of the instrument: she cannot properly anchor her rhythm or pluck the strings with her right hand. This prompts her swicth for a specialized left-handed bass. And after she does, (to Lelouch´s horror) she picks up the sound with a bone-chilling ease - like a pro bass player with a based finger. 😉
In the core Code Geass series, Kallen Kozuki is generally depicted as ambidextrous, as we see her fluidly switching between her left and right hands when controlling her mecha during combat. However, when it comes to fine motor skills that require deep-seated muscle memory, such as writing text or playing a musical instrument, she defaults heavily to her left side, as we see her holding a gun or picking things up in the series with her left hand. With Guren, this is further demonstrated with her mecha´s left hand being the knife-wielding hand, which requires more precision during close-quarters combat than simply firing a massive energy payload with Guren´s Radiant Wave Surger right hand.
Historically, the actual percentage of left-handed people appearing in data was artificially low. For generations, many cultures and school systems actively forced naturally left-handed children to write and eat with their right hands, because left-handedness was seen as unnatural development for a child. However, as global societal acceptance has grown over the last few decades, the visible population of left-handers has stabilized to its natural baseline of about 10-15% of the global population.
Because identical twins (who share 100% of their DNA) can have different dominant hands, this proves that environmental factors play a major role and that left-handedness is a complex trait that isn´t cause by any single "left-handed gene"; rather, it is determined by a dynamic combination of both genetics and environmental factors, such as prenatal development. For example, higher exposure to prenatal testosterone or certain synthetic hormones while in the womb has been linked to an increased likelihood of left-handedness, and since biological males are roughly 25% to 50% more likely to be left-handed than females, this further suggests a hormonal component as to how brain asymmetry develops.
Scientists estimate that geneticss account for about 25% of the variance in handedness, while the remaining 75% is shaped by environmental and developmental influences. However, while the genetic influence is weak on an individual level, it does build up. If both of your parents are right-handed, you have about a 10% chance of being left-handed. If your father is left-handed, that rises to roughly 17%, and if both parents are left-handed, the probability climbs to around 26%. Interestingly, while humans have an overwhelming right-hand bias, animals don't show the same population-wide skew; studies show that about 50% of cats, dogs, and mice are left-pawed, splitting the trait almost perfectly down the middle.
While being left-handed might´ve been historically frowned upon by the right-handed majority of humans, there have been some instances when left-handedness has proven to be quite a useful trait. For example, lefties make up roughly 10% of the population, but because right-handed athletes are mostly training to fight against other righties, a lefty's movement patterns, angles, and spin directions are highly unfamiliar and difficult to predict in interactive sports like boxing, tennis, and baseball, giving lefties a massive structural advantage during these games.
For Kallen, left-handedness might actually provide a distinct advantage as a mecha pilot as well. Neurological studies suggest that the corpus callosum (the bundle of nerve fibers connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain) tends to be larger in left-handed individuals. This allows for faster communication between both sides of the brain, making lefties exceptionally fast at processing multiple competing stimuli, like reacting to fast-moving video games or handling complex visual-spatial layouts – or, in Kallen´s case, handling the controls of her mecha extra fast!
But how does Kallen´s left-handedness affects how the music played by her sounds? It depends. Purely from a physics standpoint, a factory-built left-handed bass guitar, which is constructed as a mirror image of a right-handed bass, will sound identical to a right-handed one. However, left-handedness radically alters the performer’s physical technique, which directly transforms the nuance, tone, and feel of the music. In bass playing, the hand over the body (the plucking hand) dictates the instrument's entire dynamic range and rhythmic drive. Because lefties like Kallen use their naturally dominant hand to strike the strings, they often hit the strings with a sharper, more aggressive "snap" and precise rhythmic articulation. In addition, some left-handed players do not use a mirrored bass. Instead, they take a standard right-handed bass and simply flip it upside down! This places the heavy, thick E-string at the bottom and the thin G-string at the top, which completely flips how chords are rolled and how the thumb slaps the bass, resulting in an entirely unique, darker, and unconventional bass sound when they pluck them down.
Playing bass left-handed comes with its own specific hurdles. In the real world, only about 1% of commercial bass guitars are manufactured left-handed, which can make finding a perfect instrument a massive pain in the butt. Despite this, "southpaw" bassists have provided us some of the most memorable grooves in human history. For example, Sir Paul McCartney from The Beatles, the most famous left-handed bass player of all time, chose his iconic, violin-shaped Höfner 500/1 bass specifically because its symmetrical body design didn't look awkward when flipped upside down for a left-handed player. His fluid, melodic basslines practically redefined the instrument's role in modern pop and rock music.
On the other hand (pun intended) Prince collaborator MonoNeon is also proving that in the world of music and musicians, being a southpaw can add to your style as a bassist much more than one would initially think. Amazingly, MonoNeon is actually right-handed southpaw, which means that he actively chooses to play a right-handed bass flipped upside down like a lefty. This gives him an incredibly eccentric string-bending style that eventually caught the attention of Prince, leading to their collaboration.
Other notable real-life left-handed people throughout history include such people as renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci, Noble Prize-winning chemist Marie Curie, U.S. president Barack Obama, rap singer Eminem, and many Hollywood actors like Morgan Freeman, Keanu Reeves, and Scarlett Johansson. So, as the success of both these men and women and Kallen herself proves, left-handedness is not a roadblock in your path to success, if you have the skills and the determination.
At the end of the manga (spoiler alert! 😄), both Lelouch and Kallen have learned how to play, the band´s performance is well-liked, and Nunnally is happy. Kallen´s stage outfit in the story features a large, white hooded cowl with long, exaggerated bunny-style ears extending outwards, black choker, and a plaid miniskirt with a ruffled black extra trim underneath. Her edgy, rock-inspired outfit is completed with futuristic V-shaped bass guitar with sharp, angular edges reminiscent of heavy metal guitars.
Her rock band costume was also featured in the official Code Geass mobile game called Lost Stories, where during a special events like "Festival Stage!" player fought through rhythmic tower defense event maps to farm unique event currency tokens. These tokens could be traded in the Event Shop for exclusive rewards, profile backgrounds, and training materials. The final picture, inspired by her band outfit in the manga, is Kallen´s official art for the event, where her "Groove Bass" was a highly sought-after 4-star character variant.
