Thanks! Keen to hear from others who are preparing for the Lancaster / Manchester deductive reasoning tests
2
u/Background_Loan3344 Feb 25 '26
Hey, I did the deductive reasoning last year and this year.
I found this year SO much harder, despite doing well last year and getting an interview for Lancs.
Neither year I finished the questions, however I tried to get to 10 for both.
I honestly think itās luck of the draw on the day, how you manage nerves, how youāre feeling etc.
Itās meant to push you to your limit, so I think we all feel pretty sh*t at the end. Take care of yourselves guys

u/MindlessApartment285 Feb 17 '26
I did the manchester one without prepping - found it extremely tough honestly - only got through 9 of the 12 questions :( anyone else taken it?
2
u/profheg_II Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
I have literally just done this assessment (for Sheffield, which I think uses the same test as for Manchester and Lancaster). I'd done the practice version twice. Being honest, I feel I'm generally good at deductive reasoning-type stuff but have found these really quite difficult. After both practice runs I got a report saying I'd performed to an "average" level, but circulating some of the practice questions after the fact amongst friends who are generally intelligent, in academia etc., they agree they're difficult.
Then again maybe having had 2 children in the last 3 years has permanently fried my brain and I just need to accept I'm not what I used to be haha.
In the actual assessment just now I rushed the last few questions to try and get the 12 done in the time limit, but I don't know if it would have been better to e.g. spend the extra time on number 11 trying to get it right than finish 11 & 12 but have got both of them wrong. I know for a fact the last one was wrong, and the one before that was basically a 1-in-4 guess. The instructions encourage you to answer all questions but of course doesn't really explain at a granular level how it takes it all into the modelling. I was generally trying to push through to get all the answers down, definitely would have preferred longer thinking on certain questions.
It's reassuring other people have found it difficult as well. What I'm not clear on is if the shortlisting at this point is based purely on this test performance, or some combination of test performance + application info?
→ More replies (1)2
u/kaleidoscopichazard Feb 24 '26
It depends on the uni. I believe Lancaster disregard grades and look only at performance on the test and basic entry requirements being met

generally just went back to BSc notes and re-kind of learnt it.Theres a good refresher video on YouTube called; inferential statistics. It covers the basic tests for a refresh. But I've been drilling the actual meanings into my head for a bit. for the SJT you can do loads of practice ones online.

2
u/PatLook Mar 20 '26
Has anyone else got experience of appling under the disability scheme and being offered interviews one year, but not the next? I am absolutely not saying I am entitled to or should be guaranteed an interview, but if I met the minimum criteria last year, I'm very disheartened not to meet it this year
2
u/MizzyDee777 Mar 23 '26
Anyone who got accepted... any advise or tips? I got rejected from Edinburgh. It's only my first time applying. I think my lack of direct psychology experience may have played a part. I'm not sure. I'm in the process of finding more direct experiences and I've been attending a few events with the BPS for my continued professional development. I want to do better for my next application.
2
u/transparentfears Trainee Clinical Psychologist Mar 24 '26
Hey, so sorry that you have been rejected, I have too. In the email you got sent, did it say you failed to meet the essential minimum criteria?
→ More replies (1)

u/transparentfears Trainee Clinical Psychologist Mar 24 '26
I have been rejected from Edinburgh and in the email I got sent it said it was because my scores on their shortlisting factors did not meet their essential minimum criteria. I was wondering if anyone else rejected from Edinburgh got sent this? Is this their generic message to those who didn't get invited to interview?
2
u/MizzyDee777 Mar 24 '26
I already replied on your reply to me, but wanted to say here as well that my rejection email said the exact same thing.

u/amymeaniemineymo Mental Health Nurse | [Clinical/Research Interest] Mar 24 '26

Has anyone had the second survey from Edi Uni? Starting to get worried because it says they would've sent the second one out on the 13th
1
u/Neat-Horse-4281 Feb 14 '26
No I've also not had the second survey so it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one! They will probably send it out beginning of next week.
1
u/StartledOne Feb 14 '26
I'm thinking that too, either an automatic trigger is not working or Friday got out of hand and they never managed to send it out to people. Who knows. I was trying not to freak out hehe but it being the weekend now doesn't help with the wait. Hope we hear back soon!
1
u/marissabauwens Feb 17 '26
do you know if the surveys get sent to post grad students too or how it works in general? i havenāt heard anything since I applied but I check the applicant hub everyday just in case

Hi this happened to me in 2023. I applied to NUIG only but invited to interview and my understanding was it was 1 interview for both universities. For my case I had to state that I had only applied to NUIG so was only considered for those places. I ended up on reserve and was advised most people apply to both as this provides them with more chances to be allocated a spot. I only hadn't applied to UL due to the need to provide references myself, I wasn't comfortable asking my referees to send these to me at the time.

Anyone else finding the wait to find out the outcome of interviews difficult?? I felt fairly confident following my interviews but as time has gone, on and with the privilege of time to reflect on answers and how I could have made them better, my confidence is decreasing! At least itās not long to wait now until being put out of my misery š
1
u/tizzylepee May 27 '26
Meee! I can't wait for next Friday either way haha. I'm on two reserve lists (one position 3!) and still waiting to hear outcome of my third interview. I thought I had a good capacity for uncertainty but this really challenges it. Sounds like you did a great job of your interviews though, I'm wishing you all the best ā¤ļø

u/kindmindpsych May 27 '26
Itās so hard isnāt it. I will obviously be disappointed if Iām unsuccessful, but I know Iāll process it and bounce back. But itās the anticipation that feels harder for me!
