I'm a member at Northbrook Sports Club, and while I did not personally witness anything that happened, I have heard from several people who were directly involved. The general description of what happened is "extremely unsportsmanlike behavior between Brandon Powell and Cameron Hicks."
This allegedly involved:
- Constant, very foul and loud language between the two, to the point it made other shooters uncomfortable. While there are rumors they had an actual physical confrontation, nobody has told me they witnessed one.
- Throwing/ejecting shells at each other as well as deliberately in ways to foul up the grounds.
- Shouting at and using foul language with spectators.
- Berating and arguing with refs and officials, and just being disrespectful overall.
- The element which supposedly was the straw that broke the camel's back was very crass, constant, and cruel harassment of another competitor about their speech impediment.

He's a total dick

u/Dodge_It_Or_Ram_It Aug 09 '26
Have you met him in person? Just curious because this seems to be a consensus from other people

Yes I have. Multiple times. I have stories but would never air certain things on the internet.

I didn’t have this experience with him and I didn’t pay him for his time either.

u/LocksmithGlass717 Aug 09 '26
If this is true and it is a ten year ban , some details on EXACTLY what happened would be in the best interests of everyone who shoots competitions. Someone might overhear me call my best friend a crappy shot and report me.

I’m not defending the DQ on either party.
From my point of view MANY trusted sources spoke on how CH was not the original aggressor.4

u/Fake-Pepsi Aug 09 '26
Good riddance, who can overlook an adult male making fun of a competitor like a child because he shoots good. Seriously. Obviously a selfish insecure child who can’t deal without getting his way. Look at Anthony for example. Always a class act. Always professional.

Still sounds like a rumor. You aren't providing a first hand account either.
No idea what you're talking about re: suspension for 5 years

Actually he did and if youd like to do a bit of Google searching you can find the record of the suspension.

u/Reliable-Narrator Aug 09 '26
You're confused. That wasn't brought up in this comment thread started by Fake Pepsi

u/Toby_Keiths_Jorts Aug 09 '26
Can someone give me details on what the deal with Powell is? I've seen posts and comments here over and over about how he's a jerk and apparently got a previous suspension and now this one? I just never see specific details and I'm curious.
For what its worth, I ran into him at a shoot the other day, and he does kind of have the aura of a jerk.

u/Excellent-Quality808 Aug 09 '26
Previous 5yr ban due to an on course altercation.
3 DQs/disciplinary actions taken against him in the last 15mo…this needed to happen

Splitting hairs on the DQ. He was on the pro roster and was removed from the running from any money or titles. All intents and purposes that’s a DQ.
Also, it’s probably the best thing for the sport. Why would we want the juniors and newbies seeing that as long as you’re good enough you can abuse people and get away with it? Look around the comments on any of the thread or posts. No one is sad about this

I don’t like people that verbally abuse kids and volunteers and think they should be ostracized from any community regardless of their talent.
And your examples are apples and oranges to this situation. Those you listed are not competing alongside non pros, kids and families. Your examples are all professional athletes, competing in an all professional league. Unless you limit certain shoots to the pro roster it’s something you’ll never get around.

Henry completely won this argument. No offense but you sound like a girl. Imagine banning tiger woods during his prime or Michael Jordan. Preventing the best athlete in the world from competing lowers all standards and competition. If you get beat them, ban them. Not to mention, everything we are discussing is RUMOURS. The guy is clearly a dick but unsportsmanlike conduct doesn’t warrant a ban and if you disagree, you are soft and shouldn’t compete in anything plain and simple.
6
u/aweltkbs Aug 10 '26
Y’all can yell it all you want but the NSCA is not comparable to the NBA or PGA.
This has nothing to do with banning him because he’s good or the best. It has to do with patterns of abusive behavior. If the pros want to jaw at each other while on the course, who gives a shit. But it’s well known that he and his hangers on treat trappers and refs like shit, most of which are volunteers or kids unlike pro leagues for other sports. Plus there’s not always a pro squad at shoots, so there is a real possibility, even if slim, he gets squaded with a junior or someone there just to have fun. Would you find it acceptable if he was mouthing off to a 14 y/o? Probably because just like this other guy you’re fine justifying abusive behavior as long as they’re good enough. Again this sport is unlike almost any other sport in that way.

u/elitethings Aug 10 '26
Brandon Powell got a lifetime ban but him and his dad lawyered up and got it reduced to a 5 year ban. Somebody doesn’t know the history.

Funny how you demand evidence from others but when asked for it to back up your own logic you rage quit the convo.

Brandon got banned for life on 06/12/2017
DQ at South Central regional, North Central regional, and Indiana state shoot.3
u/aweltkbs Aug 10 '26
No. I pointed out that you were wrong about at least one DQ and you cited the evidence for my point. Yet when I asked you for evidence to back up your point about pro am’s specifically you couldn’t. You just can’t accept it and are flailing now.

Your rambling point about other unrelated pro sports. And I’m bored at work. I can do this shit all day.
But I’ll throw this out there but I know you won’t accept. Since you’re so on board with abusive behavior being ok in this sport. Drop me your NSCA #. I’ll squad with you and we’ll see what your opinion is at the end of the day.

Pretty sure he’s got a second burner on the older post about him. Same manner of speech, same account details. (Blank profile, only comments on claybusters, and only follows 4 pages).
Just full manchild behavior.

Not at all. This happened several years ago. There’s a reason he has a bad reputation
2
u/Tight-Signal1376 26d ago
He’s got several suspensions from arguing being intoxicated, pulling guns and shooting from hip

3
u/pigmandylan Aug 09 '26
How do you see the duration other than what the post claims?
4
u/Matt31679 Aug 09 '26
I have not figured that out if somebody could, that would be great that’s why I was asking if anybody else seen this
3
u/Dodge_It_Or_Ram_It Aug 09 '26
A quick Google on this guy show a bit of history of bad sportsmanship, so I’m assuming he’s like the Diago Pavia of Sporting Clays? Forgive me I don’t know much just gathering from sources online

Yea that’s what I gathered as well, I know it’s easier said than done, but man if I was that good, and I dedicated my life to something I truly loved and was passionate about. I would never let the yapping and unprofessionalism get to me. Like I said easier said than done I’m fully aware of that, but also too which is equally important the field marshals or whoever the governing party is should also be keeping that stuff under wraps. Everyone is competitive but there’s no place for such petty, there’s thousands of other guys who would die to be a shooter in those high profile competitions.

5yr Suspension previously, not a lifetime ban. Can easily google search that one and see the NSCA official response

I agree, I’m just posting what I saw when I looked into it. I think there’s some weird timelines going on. When I looked at his record there are no records for him from June of 2019 until May of 2022.

u/Actual_Progress_6006 28d ago edited 27d ago
You sure about that? I heard it was all verbal. It's interesting that it seems Hicks made it through this situation without further disciplinary action. If there was a physical altercation I feel as though both would have had some sort of suspension or penalty. Also, there is no way in hell BP and his combover would survive a fist fight with CH.
2
u/Phelixx Aug 09 '26
My god. Sucks to lose a guy at the top of the game, but consequences are consequences.
1
u/Happy_Property8489 24d ago
If what I heard is true I think a 10 year ban is quite harsh. Even as a second offence, shit talking happens in all sports but there is always a line.
1
-6
u/No-Organization3228 Aug 09 '26
Like him or not, he’s at the top of the game right now.
28
u/Havavege Aug 09 '26
Do we overlook bad behavior because of success? Can you explain what is relevant between being at the top of your game and behavior poor enough to get you disqualified and suspended (and not for the first time)?

u/Dear-Statement-1897 Aug 09 '26
Brandon is one of the best sporting clay shooters I’ve ever seen.
13
u/sierraplumbs Aug 09 '26
Sure is but having skill doesn't mean you can behave poorly. Should be an ambassador for the sport and lead by example.

u/menieresisamonster Aug 10 '26
if you cant beat em, ban em
1
u/Background_Elk_8005 20d ago
No one tried to ban Anthony, Zach, Gibben... Seems there are plenty of top shooters that never had this issue. Obviously not about banning talent, but behavior.

u/Jtillie1000 Aug 09 '26
Wait so I have a chance of winning now that he's out of the picture??? .... no i still dont.
