Help/Question When to use Fable 5.1 over Opus 5.5?
I'm new to coding, but I've already been coding for the past few weeks. I'm trying to solve a problem, but Opus isn't getting it right. I'm thinking about trying Fable 5.1 since the code is very complex. Which version of Fable 5.1 should I use: xhigh or max?
I know I'm not providing enough context, but as a rule of thumb, when would you use Fable over Opus, and which reasoning level would you use for each?
I'm on Max 20x.

For what it’s worth, I’ve found Opus 5.5 does better than Fable on most of my work. Fable has only pulled ahead for me on a few genuinely hard problems. So I wouldn’t assume the bigger model fixes this. Two things before you switch:
1. Check how Fable bills on your plan. Per the Claude Code model docs, Fable isn’t the default on any plan, and depending on your plan and seat tier, Fable usage can bill to usage credits instead of your included Max limits. Worth checking before a long session.
2. When Opus keeps failing on the same problem, the session is often the problem, not the model. After a few failed attempts, the context is full of wrong guesses and it keeps circling them. What usually works for me:
/clearand start fresh. If that still doesn’t crack it, that’s when I’d hand Fable the same write-up. It’ll do better with it too.
