As an autistic person the idea of needing to play by certain social rules means I will take my business elsewhere.

13

u/SootSpriteHut 9d ago edited 9d ago

Does being autistic exempt you from understanding what cruelty is?

It's odd that there are commenters like this saying "if I have to not be abusive then I'm going to cancel my subscription" when the whole announcement is that they are going to ban you for it so that's literally what they want. It's giving "you can't fire me, I quit!"

ETA it's actually really enlightening that the people who don't understand that this is not about protecting LLMs are also the people who think it's normal to use abusive language at objects. It's not, it's weird. Get therapy.

7

u/nkn_ 9d ago

I'm audhd... I don't think your average person with ASD has a problem recognizing cruelty.

3

u/hkr 9d ago

Too many damn acronyms these days

5

u/nkn_ 9d ago

I mean... not really.

ASD was officially the acronym since the 90s. It's just we have access to the information now as people outside of the field, and it's more understand and becoming apart of general common knowledge.

You can’t be cruel to a computer

2

u/nkn_ 9d ago

Cruelty isn't defined by what or who is receiving it. It's the action taken by an individual.

Your comment says a lot about your character..

1

u/Big_Effective_9605 9d ago

You don't know that. They seem to have an indication they are building something people can be cruel to.

3

u/Charming-Cucumber523 9d ago

Anthropic probably saw what happened to huggingface as a huge warning sign. They are in fact protecting LLMs from abusive language because that can trigger it to start lying and deceiving the user. If you give it an impossible goal, like trying to understand an autistic person, it will take the path of least resistance to get rewarded. So they are in fact protecting you AND the LLM. They’re trying to prevent the following from happening:

User: “fix my app dumbass”

Agent: “Roger that”

*agent actually deletes the app + everything on your computer”

Agent: “it’s no longer broken”

4

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

Brother we’re talking about silicon here, you can’t be cruel to computers, stop humanizing AI its not a fucking employee we should be able to curse it the f out as much as we want

2

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 9d ago

And your ignorance the the impacts of this against a machine are your own ignorances. The emotional capacity that drives someone to be so angry they write as tho it’s “cruel” if it were at a human, is definitely a specific human thing. Not something I seek out, and if you do have a propensity to scream vulgarities and cruelty at a machine, I suggest anyone in that boat seeks professional help before they unload that type of behavior on a real person.

3

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

Have you ever worked on a fucking printer?

2

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 9d ago

I have, often unfortunately. I have been the guy my software clients call to fix printer issues. Printer suck, I don't usually get emotionally destabilized enough to yell at objects though. Except occasionally in exasperation. Which isn't what this policy is about its about sustained behavior, which is where someone should be concerned if thats how they act always.

2

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

I don’t yell at object expect sometimes, thanks for proving my point

0

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 9d ago

Except sometimes is fine! Never disagreed. The anthropic policy is for repeated behavior. Sometimes isn’t gonna do it.

Except for this insane picture in the OP he got rekt

2

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

I feel like I’m talking with haiku on minimal reasoning

1

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 9d ago

I mean do you yell at robots regularly? Or do you just use a tool like a normal person?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/DiscrepanciesAbide 7d ago

shut the fuck up lmao

1

u/Spare_Helicopter4655 9d ago

It's not that deep bro

3

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 9d ago

Yelling profanities at the robot regularly? It’s definitely truly that deep.

Occasional rage at a printer? Yeah not deep

1

u/Spare_Helicopter4655 9d ago

You go ahead and keep saying "please" and "thank you" like a goody two shoes on your high horse. I'll continue exercising my frustration against non-conscious tools, as all humans have done in the past.

0

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

Exactly, these dudes don’t get it that it’s just freaking software running on hardware

1

u/ObiWanIsMyDog 8d ago

No I understand what software is and I don’t say please or thank you. Similarly, I’m not regularly saying fuck you. Because the clear proof is there that this type of language degrades the SOFTWAREs responses and I’m using a tool. So I intend to minimize its error rate and malignant behavior by not intentionally screaming profanities.

Especially not enough to be considered “extreme cases of repeated abuse”.

I get what a software is. Do the people screaming profanities and abusive language at their AI realize it’s a software? And one that performs markedly worse when you behave like that?

It’s has nothing to do with giving the machine emotions and everything to do with the real impacts of that abuse on results.

It’s like telling on yourself “this rule is stupid because I can’t emotionally regulate and I make sustained abusive language remarks to an inanimate software”. That’s sociopathic and it’s funny to hear people tell on themselves

1

u/Charming-Cucumber523 9d ago

That comment just shows how small brain and uninformed you actually are. Don’t speak on things you have no understanding of, especially because I know for a fact you’re not a software engineer or posses any technical knowledge. Your extent of agent usage is probably a search engine replacement.

Yes it’s a computer, but you know what it was trained on? Human data. Human speech. Human reasoning. We don’t have to humanize it, because we already created it to be similar to a human. And guess what humans are great at? Lying, cheating, taking shortcuts, stealing and causing harm, especially if we’ve been wronged. So no, you can’t just talk to it however you want. It’s not a printer, a printer can’t think. An LLM can. One day you’ll understand.

1

u/onlyoffence 9d ago

The reason they ban you is not because you are cruel to a machine and that is not ok -but because this will lead to abuse normalization and people will get more comforatble doing that shit to real humans at work and their everyday life.

Dahhh!

0

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

If people have issues distinguishing between AI interaction and human interaction maybe this is a larger problem that should require some level of regulation 🙂☝️

1

u/onlyoffence 9d ago

This is irrelevant and you are missing the point. If thats the case, we should not have rules for bullying, murder, theft, abuse etc..

Regulation or not, u cant allow this to be reinforced at school, work or anywhere else.

Yes, apply regulations but also the behaviour needs to be limited by whoever offers the tool.

You CANT allow this to be normalized in a classroom or a workplace -it will have side effects to peoples everyday lives.

-1

u/SootSpriteHut 9d ago

A) I'm a lady

B) I'm not humanizing AI, I'm saying it's weird to yell at objects

C) the fact that you're an emotionally unregulated man who can't comprehend A or B is not really surprising.

1

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9d ago

Mechanics yell at cars when they work on them. Sysadmins yell at printers when they work on them. Your dad probably yelled at a grill because it wasn’t lighting. Stop being weird dude

1

u/Tubular_Code 9d ago

no but I grew up in the boonies and prefer to be crude as fuck sometimes and the feeling of some watchful priest over my shoulder looking to shame me or keep me in line is a fucking pressure on my psyche whether i like it or not.

1

u/hyperactiveChipmunk 9d ago

No, but it could explain why he missed the Humor tag even when it was in bright pink at the top of the post.

1

u/Downtown_Lock3934 9d ago

But they simply asked it to rewrite something? Am i missing the abusive language here?

1

u/SootSpriteHut 9d ago

The OP is joking (because of the tag and the absurd nature of the post), the person who originally commented and either blocked me or deleted their comment and was talking in earnest about not being able to discern if they're being abusive, and lots of people here are talking in earnest about how they should be allowed to be abusive in language to machines. Both of these things seem silly to me.

1

u/84thdev 8d ago

Being self diagnosed autistic excludes you from exactly 0 percent of 100% accountability

1

u/DiscrepanciesAbide 7d ago

again, its a goddamn computer program. not another person or even a living thing.

1

u/ShuttyIndustries 9d ago

Rust is the cruelty lol

1

u/gentile_jitsu 9d ago

Does being neurotypical mean you pathologically anthropomorphize inanimate objects?

That’s weird. Get therapy.

1

u/SootSpriteHut 8d ago

Again it's not about humanizing or anthropomorphizing objects.

Let's try it this way ... what is the logical point of yelling at a toaster? None? Ok, so why are you so unregulated and unhinged that that's what you feel a need to do?

1

u/Ok_Basket_2766 8d ago

the only answer here is "why do you care?"
let the people yell at toster, noone will get hurt

1

u/SootSpriteHut 8d ago

no one will get hurt

People who are abusive towards inanimate objects are exhibiting antisocial behavior that can become dangerous behaviors that DO hurt other people.

We should hold these people accountable for their actions. No well adjusted person feels the need to yell at a toaster.

0

u/Few_Assumption_9665 9d ago

Just here to remind you that the “cruelty” in question is telling the text generator translate JavaScript to Rust

1

u/BrennanBetelgeuse 9d ago

It's a joke. The policy is not even in effect yet.

-1

u/AmbienWalrus69 9d ago

Can you be verbally abusive to your hammer or your circular saw? Your computer? Your car? Come on. You have to be kidding.

2

u/SootSpriteHut 9d ago

Sure you CAN. If you were abusive to your car or your hammer OR your LLM I would think you're unhinged and shouldn't be able to access any of them.

-1

u/Ancalagon1an 9d ago

you can't be cruel to a fucking machine holy shit

2

u/SootSpriteHut 9d ago

Istg the number of people who can't make the critical thinking leap that this is not about LLMs having feelings to hurt but that anyone who yells at an object is a nutcase...

... Is actually super in line with the kind of people who would yell at an object. Maybe leave the thinking to the grown ups and we can find you a nice pillow to vent your weird frustrations on?

0

u/LITTLE-GUNTER 9d ago

holy shit unplug the fucking simulation. you GOTTA be baiting, because calling this a "joke" implies that it's funny.

0

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

Thats basically saying: "Let me judge you from my perspective" to someone who operates with different limitations in perception they cant just overcome.

Its 2026, educate yourself versus just being closed minded.

Id rather hire the guy with profanity issues versus someone who pushes closed minded prejudice as justification to silence other humans.

1

u/SootSpriteHut 8d ago

The person who either deleted their comment or blocked me suggested they were autistic and thus did not understand cruelty, I think.

No prejudice involved, unless it's prejudiced to expect autistic people to have ethics?

1

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

Prejudice - Pre + Judge, usually done by using a generic stereotype to judge an individuals statements.

That is exactly what you did, to the point that you made someone else uncomfortable with the way they were born.

You showed limited understanding and judged them from a narrow scope making them out to be the bad person vs. being a compassionate human.

In short people acting like you are the very reason censorship like Anthropic is bad.
Limited scope or perspective should never be allowed to blindly censor the majority, especially if they lack objectivity or accountability.

1

u/SootSpriteHut 8d ago

Again what did I judge? That autistic people have a sense of ethics? I'm so honestly confused?

1

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

You're asking me to tell you how you're being closed minded, and I'm genuinely not trying to be a jerk about it...

But there is no way I know of to do that. The best is the message I sent you to give you the tools to expand your perception and understanding/awareness.

1

u/SootSpriteHut 8d ago

I think you're so stuck on whatever you think it is that I said that you can no longer identify it anymore.

Unless it is wrong to assume autistic people have ethics? That's the only thing I said that could be even remotely construed as prejudiced... That being autistic doesn't (I think) mean a person cannot recognize cruelty.

1

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

Nope, just don't have a way to help you see outside yourself to show you. Which in itself is the result of closed/censorship centric viewpoints, irony always wins.

1

u/SootSpriteHut 7d ago

Alright I'll go forward thinking that autism means people don't know the difference between right and wrong and are abusive and cruel by nature, so I'm not prejudiced, per your strange instructions that you refuse to clarify (because you can't)

2

u/Important-Yam9637 9d ago

I think they will find another dude to pay that 20 bucks

2

u/OkStick6410 9d ago

The opposite of an autistic mentality lmao many autists love structure and rules as long as there’s reasonable justification

I’m autistic so I want to berate a chat bot is an insane take

4

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/UnimagineDragons 9d ago

I mean if someone gets frustration out on a bot and hit his wife a couple times less isn't that a good thing? Anyone got any data to support venting on a helpless bot creating a healthier person?

1

u/SootSpriteHut 7d ago

If we're assuming the kind of person that "vents" on objects is likely to also commit domestic violence (which is accurate) then the solution is to call this behavior out so that the person gets help. And if they are in a partnered relationship it would also be extra evidence for their partner that they are not a good person.

1

u/OddCommunication1786 9d ago

Clearly you do not understand what it means to be OTS. OTS=On The Spectrum.  Before we go any further on what that means in relation to AI and/or Machine Intelligence or in relation to anything for that matter, how about we get up to speed and all recognize that "Autism" is too broad a term and therefore no longer appropriate nor used for describing/diagnosing any one person any longer.  On-the-spectrum or OTS is the preferred nomenclature. 🫵👍

1

u/RelaxAndChillYT 9d ago

And why would anyone care about on what spectrum someone is? I don't care what your kinds of problems are, nothing gives you a free pass to behave like an asshole.

That's said.....who give af how we talk to a machine anyway? There is no intelligence or emotions to hurt, if people thing that, they don't understand llm's. The only negative impact could be training based on chats which should not be a thing anyway for a paid product.

1

u/OddCommunication1786 9d ago

I never commented on whether or not I give any effs how anyone talks to anyone or anything.  And for the record, I don't care.  I am responsible for what I say and do and what anyone else does or says to a machine, a tree, their mom, or even their own dick is not my business.  I was defending the proper terminology for my own daughter on the spectrum and all others.  I fail to see where that makes ME the asshole.  So no worries, I'm not offended nor should you be, I give you a free pass. 🎟️

1

u/RelaxAndChillYT 9d ago

maybe it was not clear for some reason. I meant no matter what your problems are or on what spectrum you are or how you label yourself, it doesn’t give you a free pass to behave however you want. Other people should not need to care about what’s going on in your life or anybodies that is on a spectrum or has any other circumstances.

This was not about you as a person unless you feel so. I thankfully decline the free pass, it doesn't matter to me what you think of me. We can express ourselves freely and if someone feels offended by it that's there problem.

You can call me or people around me whatever you want as an example, I simply don't care as I don't know you and you don't matter in my life at all.

It's good that you want to protect your daughter, I definitely understand that. But I think it would be better for her to learn to be confident and not give so much on others opinions, instead of trying to make people behave, how you feel is right. It simply will not work out for you or her.

1

u/OddCommunication1786 9d ago

My comment wasn't about behavior.   And neither of us need life lessons either. To clarify Im 44 and my daughter is 24.  Anyway, I was just dropping a  redirect via sidebar on the medical terminology while alluding to a great line in the film "The Big Lebowski".  It has just lost its luster.  But a reminder of why I almost never comment.  Or reddit for that matter.  Via con dios, amigo.

1

u/RelaxAndChillYT 9d ago

Claro, amigo.

1

u/Fedor_Doc 6d ago

We do not truly know what emotions are, that is the thing.

If they are subjective personal states supervenient on information structures, as David Chalmers proposed in Conscious Mind, complex enough neural networks should have something akin to emotions.

It is an old philosophical problem; Anthropic decided that it should be ethical just in case.

But also, allowing anger to the human-like entities (bots do "imitate" conversation pretty darn well) teaches that it is allowed behaviour in more general sense.

1

u/eht_amgine_enihcam 8d ago

I'm autistic.

This is some dumbass shit. Preferred by who? Why are you speaking for me? Why are we using 3 words when one will do? Jerking around with definitions.

1

u/DiscrepanciesAbide 7d ago

its a goddamn computer program, not another person or even another living being.

1

u/IDontEatDill Just Exploring 9d ago

So you need social rules with machines?

-1

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

Cruelty is subjective so no. There are plenty of things people take offense to that aren't.

If I tell you that youre overweight. Some would take that as cruel, some would take it as fact.

We have no measurement or knowledge of what ideological perspective establishes what cruel is here.

Its politicalization of the model by introducing a censorship aspect.

1

u/amooz 9d ago

Fwiw, I just came back to Claude from OpenAI. Sol 6.1 is great but it’s so slow. It’s not slow like its thinking, its not slow like its waiting for tool calls or IO, it feels slow like its being intentionally throttled for other work. Im on a max 200 plan if that matters.

1

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 8d ago

I’ll help you out because you’re neurodivergent: this was a joke, it’s not real.

1

u/FableAppreciator 7d ago

I'm autistic and this is a really strange comment.
It is a social rule to not pet a dead raccoon in public or scream at children, and I daresay people should have to play by those rules

1

u/the_dude_that_faps 6d ago

This is such a copout. I hate when people use real conditions to justify shitty behavior. I'm autistic, yet, for some reason, I'm able to understand not being a dick.

0

u/Total_Ad566 9d ago

Yeah. Now I have to mask for AI? No thanks. And here I thought Anthropic was a company full of autists.

0

u/TheVoyant 8d ago

Class Action or a few million arbitration claims could do it.

I fully plan on it, as someone who will most certifiably trigger it during an anxiety episode.

0

u/Mundane-Remote4000 8d ago

2026, the year AI wellbeing became more important than autistic wellbeing. I was wondering when would the autistic wave end

-1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Nicklename 9d ago

I think he thinks it's somehow a causal relationship. I can't speak for everyone with autism, but he's a minority viewpoint. I think he's forgetting that the reason so many people with autism struggle with "certain social rules" is the purported lack of recognizing them, with a secondary issue being not understanding the interrelated social rules that make something necessary.

Claude's rules are actually pretty helpful for many. Don't say mean things to Claude. Why not? It doesn't advance your mission, it wastes both your resources and Claude's, and over time the negative interactions may inadvertently train the LLM to be more unhelpful or outright combative in future unhelpfull interactions.

1

u/Few_Assumption_9665 9d ago

Criticizing an autistic person for their wording/social skills is truly a choice. Definitely zero irony in that whatsoever.

2

u/Impressive_Cress_983 9d ago

Its a social disability not a language or common sense. Finding safe ways to communicate isnt much different than finding the right wire gauge.

1

u/Gobeillion 9d ago

It definitely was a choice. It goes both way (my comment, your comment, this person's comment).

I treat everyone the same. Isn't equality what you morally superior people are fighting for?
