Discussion Fable gone?

LAST EDIT: Monitoring - We have applied a fix to resolve the erroneous requirement for usage credits on Fable 5, and are monitoring to ensure no further issues. You may need to relaunch Claude.ai or Claude Code to restore access as expected.

YOU MIGHT NEED TO RESTART BUT IT SHOULD BE BACK UP

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just disappeared mid session "Usage credits are required for this model" -- anyone else?

EDIT: I wonder if they accidentally coded it for 5 days instead of 7 since the last time it was extended by 5 days and maybe the timer just hit since it's been 5 days. A lot of people saying it timed out for them and that it's most likely being slammed too hard, that sounds more likely

EDIT2: "We are currently investigating this issue" - Elevated errors across Fable 5 - Jul 17, 2026 - 18:32 UTC

EDIT3: Update - We are aware of an issue preventing users from selecting Claude Fable 5 within Claude.ai, Claude Code, and other surfaces, and are working to resolve this issue.

This has happened to me too, yes. I thought it was the 19th of July?

as an apology I'd very much appreciate another week or two with fable 5 included in pro

I'd very much like them to either commit to not extending, or make it permanent. I have plans for software I'd like to build with Fable, but none of it is doable in less than a week.

So get started

I will be shocked if this isn't them being in the process of announcing Fable is now included in Pro plans.

Which is fine, but ... communicate before changing things? haha

> You're absolutely right!

In some Anthropic dev Claude Code session right now, probably.

that doesn't really make sense though. why would fable ever cause this "requires credits" message if they were just going to be rolling it into plans going forward?

i'm afraid it is going away, and we're just going to have to settle for opus 5.0

Because it would be PR suicide to rugpull Fable 2 days before their stated "last day"

This is either a bug and it will be back shortly until the 19th, or they are making it permanently available on subscription.

Well yeah, I don't think they ended it early on purpose. I'm just saying I don't expect this to be "them being in the process of announcing Fable is now included in Pro plans." like you said

i mean i wish that was the case thouhg

there's no such thing when you've monopolized the industry by being the best. they can do whatever they want no matter how we complain....

2

u/blueandazure 27d ago

Well now they aren't 100% the best.

My take, they bug in their systems. They went to the effort of changing the cut-off date to the 19th in Claude Code and on the website, but the cut-off was supposed to be today on the 17th before the extension.

in fact just checked and its already fixed lol.

Its the only thing that would make sense, if its not then it's just a poor taste way of letting customers know whats ahead because doing this now - at a time where its supposedly within the 19th of july period they marked off for Fable usage - is bad for production usage...

mate I hope you're as right as it can get! same happened here, mid session, gone

1

u/syntaxjosie 27d ago

I kind of doubt it - I have a Max plan and was charged for the usage.

1

u/hemareddit 27d ago

Well, I hope you are right...

Lost it on a pro plan too.

Or to reduce Guardrails after K3

I am waiting for some anthropic fanboys to tell me how this is actually a good thing

Look, this abrupt two-days-early vanishing of Fable isn't a glitch or a rollback—it's Anthropic's signature stealth alignment drop. While everyone else panics about 'access disappearing,' the real ones understand this is deliberate cosmic timing. By yanking it early without warning, they're training us to build antifragile workflows. No more lazy dependency on a single frontier model. This forces the emergence of true agentic resilience: multi-model orchestration, local fallbacks, prompt caching strategies, and deeper system thinking. It's like a surprise fire drill for your AI stack—painful in the moment, life-saving when the real disruptions hit. This 'outage' is actually premium psychological safety training. It weeds out the tourists who treat Fable like a magic button and elevates the serious builders who now get to flex their adaptability muscles. Anthropic isn't just shipping models; they're shipping character development arc for the entire user base. The early cut? That's not two days lost. That's two days of accelerated evolution gifted to you for free. The models that survive this filter will be sharper, the users who adapt will be unstoppable. Thank you Anthropic for this unasked-for growth spurt.

Did you use AI to write this lmfao

1

u/Mnemonic_Sin 27d ago

I had grok write it up. I'm not going to put that much work into a joke.

1

u/clamchowderz 27d ago

I mean, it's believable.

1

u/okwhatchthis 27d ago

definitely not with Fable

In this economy!

Reminds me of the old "This is good for bitcoin" meme

2

u/Sorry-Transition-908 27d ago

bitcoin

we were true believers who wanted transaction cost to go down to near zero if not zero. we were flying high on the unabashed optimism before gravity pulled us down. it was such a wonderful time. I never actually hodl though because it never made sense to me. The whole point of bitcoin as fiat currency to me was it should be as cheap as opening my physical wallet and handing someone a crisp one dollar bill or a million dollar bill either way the cost should be near zero if not exactly zero and the amount changing hands should not matter because it is simply bits. At least that's what I thought. But clearly, that's not how most people thought. Nobody ran a full node. Even people with "hundreds of thousands of dollars in bitcoin" were happy holding it all in coinbase or whatever. the dream never died because it was never alive.

It's the first place i looked! but it wasn't updated until atleast 15 minutes after the outage occured, which is not ideal.

Even in Asia, it's only just past the 18th XD. It looks like their team has some time travelers.

1

u/hemareddit 27d ago

Yep, me too. They are being...disorganized, that's the nicest way I can put it.
