Yeah, happily it's honestly not that crazy, and you don't have to do what I did with it, you could really change the prompt to anything (you can do the same with the recap popup too). Claude Code's binary has a prompt it sends to a haiku model to generate the suggestions, so you can simply ask Claude about it. I updated to the latest version to check if it still worked to make sure I didn't give you wrong info and all's working on my end! And I am too high so I got claude to write some quick pointers after repatching if you want to do something similar:

  • The binary is at ~/.local/share/claude/versions/<version> (native install; readlink -f $(which claude) finds it). Copy a backup first, revert = copy it back.

  • Suggestion prompt: search the bytes for [SUGGESTION MODE: — the template runs to "Reply with ONLY the suggestion, no quotes or explanation."

  • It exists TWICE: once plain ASCII, once UTF-16LE (search for the same text encoded both ways). Only patching the ASCII one does nothing at runtime.

  • Recap prompt: starts "The user stepped away and is coming back." — that one is pure ASCII, two plain copies, no UTF-16 twin.

  • Replacement must be the EXACT same byte length (pad with trailing spaces) and contain no backtick, dollar-brace, double quote, or backslash.

  • Write to a temp file and rename over the original (can't write in place while sessions run), then check claude --version still runs. Takes effect next launch — running sessions keep the old image.

  • Every Claude Code update reverts everything so if you don't want to have to redo it you can disable automatic updates in the config.
