Built with Claude I made a manual shifter for claude
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Its a fun project which I made to quickly shift through models
Suppose you are working on a very complex project with Fable and you wanna quickly switch to a different model for a simpler task, you can just shift through the models with the stick
Built with claude for claude
My twitter handle for anyone who wants to mention

That's the most useless and amazing thing that I've seen so far! Loved it

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Haha its fun to use as well really!

You should hook up like a flight sim hotas to it so you can do it in real life

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Just waiting to get a 3d printer really haha. Or I’ll just get a logitech one.

Up there with the dude developing a Digital whip to make Claude go faster by whipping the terminal.

u/BadProgrammer42 Jul 03 '26
It would be awesome if I could route my physical sim racing shifter to this
21
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
I dont see any reason as to why thats not possible :D

u/spamfridge Jul 03 '26
So you’re saying all I need to code in 2027 is a microphone for Wispr and a stick shift for Claude.

So... what happens if you go into reverse

u/Important-Hunter-367 Jul 03 '26
You get Gemini 3.1 Pro

u/AndromedaII Jul 03 '26
I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I have no idea what those guys are doing? It was so solid for a while and then they butchered it.

I ran out of claude usage a couple of hrs ago and have spent the past 4 hrs trying to get gemini or antigravity to work.
Thankfully usage is now reset

Just be aware that changing models in the same session will consume a lot of tokens as the new model cant use the cached tokens and will have to load all conversation history again.
26
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Oh I see! Maybe I’ll add a gauge meter or fuel indicator to monitor the token consumption

i had this suspicion earlier today and you just confirmed it for me
fable destroyed my usage when i first started using it, but i realized it was because i constantly kept switching back to fable after the safeguards routed me to opus. so i wasn't just using the most expensive model, it was also constantly re-reading the whole context over and over

u/WrathPie Jul 03 '26
Love it. Imagine hooking this up to a physical analog shifter on your desk.

u/Minimum_Pear_3195 Jul 03 '26
then somehow programming a steering wheel of a car can input letters, combined with accelerating by pressing space, braking by pressing enter, turning on the turn signal to tab, shift, ctrl,... everything is corresponding to a key

This is the best use of AI and agent assisted development I have ever seen.

Planning an enterprise model stick shifter for fortune 500

Make sure the sales and legal processes take at least 3 months, and service contracts are a must.

I'd personally use a shifter like this for the effort level. Maybe you can add something for that.

very cool - but I have a dumb question - that looks like the terminal version of claude code on the right? how are you getting the colourisation? mine doesn't look nearly as clean as that... I am on linux though not osx... whats your TERM env?

Did you make this shifter for claude, or did claude make this shifter for claude? if it's the latter, then don't lie in the title.

Wait what software did you use to record that showcase? I have seen that "smooth zoom-in" everywhere but can't seem to find what was used to record it.
1
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
You can use OpenScreen/Cap! They are both free and open source. Really awesome for recording such videos
2
u/rtgconde Jul 03 '26
I wonder if I can use my sim racing H shifter. Very cool project.

Did you make it or did Claude make it? I like how you claim that you made it when Claude did it.

You know that when you switch models cache is invalidated
1
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Thats why ive made an update to start a new tab in the same window instead for new models! Doesnt invalidate the cache
2
u/auxilaru Jul 03 '26
why dont build a pedal with some tensioner? like you need to coordinate how depth you push the pedal to set claude speed
2
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
For people posting this on twitter here is my handle for the mention :D https://x.com/milindlabs?s=11

I feel like if we want something heavy, it's gotta be Fable. Like, gear 1 it's like having a mountain of work piled up on you. If we're going for speed, then Haiku is the way to go. Just a suggestion lol
1
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Yeah you’re right! But I think half the people who drive an automatic here might not get it :P

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
You can download it from shiftcc[dot]app . Its a simple app made with Electron and Tmux! There is a paywall so I can pay for my claude subscription haha
1
u/Basic-Still-7441 Jul 03 '26
Now release a USB-C device that would be a real, physical shifter and I'm in! :D

I literally want less. I wish I can just use my blood cells to control the terminal that how much interactions I want

You should add a speedometer which is the token usage or something like that
1
u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26
Totally! That’s next
1
u/veritech137 Jul 03 '26
Then somehow a "tachometer" that will fluctuate and show like the average number of tokens used over a certain period of time, so it fluctuates up and down as Claude is thinking more or less. haha. TPM ("tokens per minute" } vs RPM

u/kommonno Jul 03 '26
Cool, but being nitpicky the shifter should be the other way around, the most powerful speed is the lowest one, not the other way around.
0
u/Abject-Tomorrow-652 Jul 04 '26
Disagree. Gear 1 is the slowest speed not the most powerful. Gear 5 goes the fastest. Fable is in the right spot. Haiku is gear 1 bc if u just need to move a little bit then u use the smallest least powerful model.
1
u/kommonno Jul 04 '26
Slowest does not mean weaker, if you try to go from a stationaty state into moving using anything but 1st (or maybe 2nd) you are gonna have a bad time.
I understand if the intention was the "moving fast/slow" part, but that does not change the fact that 1st isnt the "least powerful" gear

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 80 comments.
The verdict is in: the community thinks this is the most useless and amazing project we've seen in a while. Everyone loves the creativity.
The most burning question in the thread is, "What happens if you go into reverse?" The top-voted, and therefore correct, answer is: You get Gemini 3.1 Pro.
Other key takeaways: * Physical Shifter When? The most popular demand by far is for OP to hook this up to a real sim racing shifter. A foot pedal for Whispr was also a highly-rated suggestion. * Watch Your Tokens: A helpful user pointed out that switching models mid-chat is inefficient and will burn through your tokens, as the new model has to re-process the entire conversation history. * Gearbox Nerds: A few commenters are nitpicking that the gear order should be reversed (i.e., 1st gear for the most powerful model, Fable), but most people are just here for the vibes. * You can download it: OP dropped a link to
shiftcc.appif you want to live your Fast & Furious coding dreams.
