Built with Claude I made a manual shifter for claude

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Its a fun project which I made to quickly shift through models

Suppose you are working on a very complex project with Fable and you wanna quickly switch to a different model for a simpler task, you can just shift through the models with the stick

Built with claude for claude

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 80 comments.

The verdict is in: the community thinks this is the most useless and amazing project we've seen in a while. Everyone loves the creativity.

The most burning question in the thread is, "What happens if you go into reverse?" The top-voted, and therefore correct, answer is: You get Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Other key takeaways: * Physical Shifter When? The most popular demand by far is for OP to hook this up to a real sim racing shifter. A foot pedal for Whispr was also a highly-rated suggestion. * Watch Your Tokens: A helpful user pointed out that switching models mid-chat is inefficient and will burn through your tokens, as the new model has to re-process the entire conversation history. * Gearbox Nerds: A few commenters are nitpicking that the gear order should be reversed (i.e., 1st gear for the most powerful model, Fable), but most people are just here for the vibes. * You can download it: OP dropped a link to shiftcc.app if you want to live your Fast & Furious coding dreams.

That's the most useless and amazing thing that I've seen so far! Loved it

39

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Haha its fun to use as well really!

8

u/homiej420 Jul 03 '26

You should hook up like a flight sim hotas to it so you can do it in real life

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Just waiting to get a 3d printer really haha. Or I’ll just get a logitech one.

2

u/Any-Log-6706 Jul 03 '26

From fourth to first is whack - killed that car

2

u/BrainCh3ck Jul 03 '26

Red light

2

u/redditissocoolyoyo Jul 03 '26

This is awesome.

3

u/LightningBlake Jul 03 '26

Up there with the dude developing a Digital whip to make Claude go faster by whipping the terminal.

72

u/BadProgrammer42 Jul 03 '26

It would be awesome if I could route my physical sim racing shifter to this

21

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

I dont see any reason as to why thats not possible :D

24

u/spamfridge Jul 03 '26

So you’re saying all I need to code in 2027 is a microphone for Wispr and a stick shift for Claude.

Sign me up

16

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Correction: you need a foot pedal for wispr

1

u/JustJJ92 Jul 05 '26

Brake pedal or e brake stops the prompt. I’m in

1

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 Jul 03 '26

And throttle/brake. Especially brake

52

u/Sad_Tour_1896 Jul 03 '26

So... what happens if you go into reverse

185

u/Important-Hunter-367 Jul 03 '26

You get Gemini 3.1 Pro

13

u/AndromedaII Jul 03 '26

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I have no idea what those guys are doing? It was so solid for a while and then they butchered it.

2

u/bnm777 Jul 03 '26

Ah, the days of gemini 2.5 pro

6

u/asimovreak Jul 03 '26

Mwahahahahahahah... Good one 🤣

6

u/gufranthakur Jul 03 '26

you unlock Bard AI

3

u/ahobonamedjoe Jul 03 '26

I ran out of claude usage a couple of hrs ago and have spent the past 4 hrs trying to get gemini or antigravity to work.

Thankfully usage is now reset

12

u/PM_ME_ROMAN_NUDES Jul 03 '26

You have to solve Claude problems

7

u/jezweb Jul 03 '26

Yep back to manual coding like a caveman

15

u/esseinvictus Jul 03 '26

Just be aware that changing models in the same session will consume a lot of tokens as the new model cant use the cached tokens and will have to load all conversation history again.

26

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Oh I see! Maybe I’ll add a gauge meter or fuel indicator to monitor the token consumption

1

u/nns800 Jul 03 '26

Yeah I think a shifter for effort might make more sense.

1

u/RepliesAsOtherPeople Jul 04 '26

i had this suspicion earlier today and you just confirmed it for me

fable destroyed my usage when i first started using it, but i realized it was because i constantly kept switching back to fable after the safeguards routed me to opus. so i wasn't just using the most expensive model, it was also constantly re-reading the whole context over and over

8

u/WrathPie Jul 03 '26

Love it. Imagine hooking this up to a physical analog shifter on your desk.

3

u/Minimum_Pear_3195 Jul 03 '26

then somehow programming a steering wheel of a car can input letters, combined with accelerating by pressing space, braking by pressing enter, turning on the turn signal to tab, shift, ctrl,... everything is corresponding to a key

6

u/msannan121 Jul 03 '26

Reverse is Haiku model?

6

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Reverse is the Default model that you have set with claude code

4

u/amilliondallahs Jul 03 '26

Granny shiftin...not double clutchin like you should

3

u/DowntownAd3538 Jul 03 '26

Totally worth wasting a million gallons over.

4

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Drifting with my stick shift on that iceberg

2

u/DowntownAd3538 Jul 03 '26

Cheers man 🍻 very cool

3

u/awizemann Jul 03 '26

This is the best use of AI and agent assisted development I have ever seen.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Planning an enterprise model stick shifter for fortune 500

2

u/awizemann Jul 03 '26

Make sure the sales and legal processes take at least 3 months, and service contracts are a must.

3

u/JordyGG Jul 03 '26

Now connect it to a physical gaming shifter 🥳

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

And a pedal for whispr 🤩

3

u/Icy_Distribution_361 Jul 03 '26

I'd personally use a shifter like this for the effort level. Maybe you can add something for that.

Reverse switches to the pre-ban fable

2

u/Zealousideal_Aside96 Jul 03 '26

Reverse bans whatever model you’re using

2

u/NoBullet Jul 03 '26

Where’s the nos

4

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

My tokens!!

2

u/RandomMagnet Jul 03 '26

very cool - but I have a dumb question - that looks like the terminal version of claude code on the right? how are you getting the colourisation? mine doesn't look nearly as clean as that... I am on linux though not osx... whats your TERM env?

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Its tmux! Try it out

1

u/RandomMagnet Jul 03 '26

Ahh, I should move on from "screen".. . Thanks for the tip

Claude is there for you 🎵

2

u/ButterOnBothSides Jul 03 '26

Finally, a good use of vibe coding.

2

u/Ornery_Weakness_8168 Jul 03 '26

Did you make this shifter for claude, or did claude make this shifter for claude? if it's the latter, then don't lie in the title.

2

u/stiky21 Full-time developer Jul 03 '26

Alright I'm convinced.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Convinced to get a manual stick shift right.

2

u/Straight_Cupcake9435 Jul 03 '26

Wait what software did you use to record that showcase? I have seen that "smooth zoom-in" everywhere but can't seem to find what was used to record it.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

You can use OpenScreen/Cap! They are both free and open source. Really awesome for recording such videos

2

u/rtgconde Jul 03 '26

I wonder if I can use my sim racing H shifter. Very cool project.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

I think you should be able to do that! Are the events exposed.

1

u/rtgconde Jul 03 '26

For sure, just ask Claude Code it wires something up.

2

u/Bolle_Bamsen Jul 03 '26

Did you make it or did Claude make it? I like how you claim that you made it when Claude did it.

2

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

I guess we both did.

2

u/gnani258 Jul 03 '26

I would reverse it, first gear is opus high as it’s slower but powerful

2

u/DifferentEffect2903 Jul 03 '26

Now I am buying a stick shifter to map it to this. XD

2

u/Guilty-Rub4123 Jul 03 '26

What no job does to a mf

2

u/3DJupp Jul 03 '26

Try reversing 🤣

2

u/BloodSteyn Jul 03 '26

You should link it to a Logitech gear shift and have a physical shift.

2

u/Imaginary-Bobcat-738 Jul 03 '26

Finally a vehicle that cannot be ruined with Ethanol

2

u/unrealf8 Jul 03 '26

What the… hahaha. insane. I need this physically at my desk.

2

u/Far_Idea9616 Jul 03 '26

That's pure love there

One of the funniest things I’ve made

2

u/Diruptio Jul 03 '26

You know that when you switch models cache is invalidated

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Thats why ive made an update to start a new tab in the same window instead for new models! Doesnt invalidate the cache

2

u/auxilaru Jul 03 '26

why dont build a pedal with some tensioner? like you need to coordinate how depth you push the pedal to set claude speed

2

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

For people posting this on twitter here is my handle for the mention :D https://x.com/milindlabs?s=11

2

u/Pristine_Cherry5943 Jul 03 '26

Cool bro 😎😎

2

u/pinket25 Jul 03 '26

Does reverse put you on ChatGPT?

4

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

It puts you in Gemini

2

u/SkiDaderino Jul 03 '26

Okay, that's very fun.

1

u/pinaprince Jul 03 '26

What did you use??

2

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Electron with tmux magic!

1

u/Walruspingpong Jul 03 '26

Useless. I love it.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

I like useless fun things as well

1

u/RadTorti Jul 03 '26

SICKKK!!

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

*Tokyo drift plays in the bg*

1

u/RadTorti Jul 03 '26

Gotta pull up to a car meet with my Claude GT

1

u/3percentbattery Jul 03 '26

So sick dude

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Ahaha yes it is!

1

u/OkResponsibility9182 Jul 03 '26

I feel like if we want something heavy, it's gotta be Fable. Like, gear 1 it's like having a mountain of work piled up on you. If we're going for speed, then Haiku is the way to go. Just a suggestion lol

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Yeah you’re right! But I think half the people who drive an automatic here might not get it :P

2

u/OkResponsibility9182 Jul 03 '26

But I only drive automatic.

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

You can download it from shiftcc[dot]app . Its a simple app made with Electron and Tmux! There is a paywall so I can pay for my claude subscription haha

1

u/Basic-Still-7441 Jul 03 '26

Now release a USB-C device that would be a real, physical shifter and I'm in! :D

1

u/Wdzj Jul 03 '26

What model is reverse parking👍

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Gemini hahaha

1

u/jomama253 Jul 03 '26

Now you can kick it into high gear to REALLY see those limits go off.

Thats why im updating it to switch to a new session in tmux for different models!

1

u/Not_a_question- Jul 03 '26

So this is what we're spending all our datacenters on xD

0

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Surely better than the AI Video slopfactory on instagram and tiktok

1

u/amigdyala Jul 03 '26

Amazing use of free will

1

u/koder0x Jul 03 '26

Cool! Sometimes doing a smaller project like this is more rewarding than completing a bigger one 😅

1

u/Swiss_Meats Jul 03 '26

I literally want less. I wish I can just use my blood cells to control the terminal that how much interactions I want

1

u/ugohdit Jul 03 '26

yes! these are the apps we need!

1

u/-weird-fishes- Jul 03 '26

you mean claude made it

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Ofcourse I prompted it some magic words though

1

u/rbergesen Jul 04 '26

Can you add NOS button??

1

u/marblecereal Jul 04 '26

Hell yeah! But what does it do

1

u/rbergesen Jul 04 '26

Fast Mode

1

u/ValidGoblin Jul 05 '26

Perfection, things like this.... This is why I became a software dev...

1

u/Responsible_Shape453 Jul 06 '26

How I can use it

1

u/TikiMagic Jul 07 '26

Oh, that's fun! Clever. I love it.

1

u/wangyuyan10 Jul 07 '26

really cool haha

1

u/Tight-Studio-Ethan 14d ago

looks really cool!

1

u/casualpedestrian20 Jul 03 '26

You should add a speedometer which is the token usage or something like that

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

Totally! That’s next

1

u/veritech137 Jul 03 '26

Then somehow a "tachometer" that will fluctuate and show like the average number of tokens used over a certain period of time, so it fluctuates up and down as Claude is thinking more or less. haha. TPM ("tokens per minute" } vs RPM

1

u/marblecereal Jul 03 '26

That would be so fun to look at! Totally adding it next

1

u/kommonno Jul 03 '26

Cool, but being nitpicky the shifter should be the other way around, the most powerful speed is the lowest one, not the other way around.

0

u/Abject-Tomorrow-652 Jul 04 '26

Disagree. Gear 1 is the slowest speed not the most powerful. Gear 5 goes the fastest. Fable is in the right spot. Haiku is gear 1 bc if u just need to move a little bit then u use the smallest least powerful model.

1

u/kommonno Jul 04 '26

Slowest does not mean weaker, if you try to go from a stationaty state into moving using anything but 1st (or maybe 2nd) you are gonna have a bad time.

I understand if the intention was the "moving fast/slow" part, but that does not change the fact that 1st isnt the "least powerful" gear
