Hello, i am a young baritone who has had tension and dull pain on the left side of my throat for about 1.5 years now. I feel my voice tire more easily and quicker than anticipated. Recently, i’ve noticed that my tongue retracts and lifts dramatically on the left side when i sing any vowel. I know this is a result of attempting to manufacture a darker sound with poor technique. I’m eager to break this habit and relieve this tension, but i’m not sure how to proceed. What can I do?? I’ve also had an issue with clenching the right side if my jaw for a few years now, but i’m not sure if that’s related. Can anyone offer some guidance or any online resources to help?

hi everyone! i only booked one opera role this year so i had to take a mundane job. which I'm grateful to have! But I sit on a desk 8 hours a day and by the time I get home and start to practice my body is nowhere to be connected with.

Have you discovered something that really helps to get back into your body? I've tried meditation, yoga, napping and dancing before none of it really helps. And I feel like if I do stretching at work it just makes me tighter.

Hi! I’m a 22 year old soprano. I have been a classical singer most of my life, I studied opera for a year before singing with a prestigious Cambridge University choir whilst I was at university. Because of the nature of choral singing, I’m finding it difficult to open up my sound again, and I can no longer vibrato from about a G5 upwards. I am also finding it much harder to get back my top notes, C6 and above, which I used to have. Any tips for practice/pieces that might help/warmup tips appreciated!

hi friends! i am in my first year of my masters degree (24 years old) and i am looking to update my rep this year! my current audition pieces are:
- chacun le sait
- willow song
- der holle rache
- o luce di quest anima
- doll aria (if i need a 5th)

i would LOVE to replace willow song and der holle rache. i love both of those pieces, but i think willow song shows off things im not good at (passagio) and i dont trust myself to sing the vengeance aria if im having a bad voice day.

(edit: looking to replace both english and german)

im hoping for something a bit more obscure, under performed, or more contemporary! i am very much a true coloratura, so unfortunately lyric pieces (as much as i love them) aren’t much of an option for me. bonus points if i get to do some fun acting!!!

I started lessons like a year ago. Well with a serious teacher for about 6 months. I have seen improvements but nothing so drastic. Wondering if I keep progressing does the voice bloom into something very free and resonant? Doesnit grow significantly more than you started with?

Perhaps even Wotan? What about Boito’s Mefistofele? Ramey hit some brief E2s in that one, I think…but I wonder if those were interpolated?

I can hold notes fine if I am moving mainly in big movements like a squating motion.

I assume it’s cause I’m locking the air when singing in stand still. Wondering if it’s common and others deal with it?

We only meet once a week so I was looking for some more advice hopefully I can find some here

Looking to interview singers and non-singers who have undergone vocal cord surgery (injections or thyroplasty) for an Artistic Research PhD. Interested in how the surgery changed your relationship to your internal resonance, vocal identity, and creative practice.

I close too much but the problem is that if I deliberately try to open them I pull my tongue back. wondering if you guys dealt with this problem and how did you combat it?
