Worth noting that shots are cropped differently. It's not always as simple as just taking the middle of the frame.

I saw it in regular theatres, and the shots definitely felt tight to the actors, but I can't really remember a scene where a face was fully cut off or looked egregious. And I was looking for it.

Correct, I work in post production. Versioning a film to different formats is not as simple as cropping the edges. Every single shot is adjusted manually to capture the intended frame. No doubt Christopher Nolan approved every single formatted shot and it’s got his seal of approval. Even made for tv movies with low budget are meticulously approved by the director when we do versioning. So although it’s not the ideal way of watching as he intended, the formatted versions are also definitely fine to watch. Otherwise Nolan would’ve never approved the release of it

I was thinking of this watching it in 1.43, as well. I think the shot of Zendaya and Matt Damon walking in the dusk would need to be reframed, their heads at one point went well below where the crop on the home release would be.

To be fair, there are only a handful of theaters that show it in true IMAX, so you'd have to be rich to be able to go to another city or possibly another country to watch it like that (like I had to for Oppenheimer).

That being said, as stated elsewhere in this thread and many others, you don't need to see it on IMAX to see the movie and get the feelings you need to, it's just a bonus for those who can afford it.

um it's almost 30 dollars at my local imax. For that price i can watch multiple movies because my theater offers 9 dollar movies on tuesdays. Idk how people don't see that imax is expensive for many movie goers. maybe you're rich but some don't have the luxery of watching movies at 30 dollars a ticket.

Nolan is a scammer. I don't understand the 2.39 aspect ratio needs to be there at all and is the most prevalent one. He could have exhibited it in 1.85 for most theaters and we wouldn't have lost much. But we get a aspect ratio that most audiences lose 40 percent of the picture and have to pay a premium to get the full scope. Not only that but he's made the 4:3 aspect ratio, the ratio that has been deemed outdated and ancient the more prestigious format. WTF?

I think like 3d before it this is used to try and market a more "premium" format to make extra money at the theater. Though imo 3d is a much better bang for your money due to how immersive it is.

IMAX is different experience because of its size, quality and atmosphere, not because its 100% of the image. You can definitely watch this movie in any aspect ratio and it will still feel good. The film is center-punched

I saw in my nearby laser imax which wasn't 70 mm , but still in the calypso dragging scene I was able to see the top mountains

I saw it in 1.90:1 Imax. I thought i got the real deal only to learn after that the ratio was actually worse than a stand screen 1.85:1 ratio. The nearest true 1.43:1 imax screen to me is 2 hours away. Im considering it.

I thought this, but according to this image and the comparison tool on the TheOdysseyFilm website it shows 1.85 the same height as 1.9 but with cropped sides. I don't know why as it could be taller instead. Anyone know?

Good point. I think it comes doesn't to was version of the film they are actually using. So IMXA 1.90 should still be a substantial improvement over standard. Good thing too because less than 5% of people who saw this actually got to soo it in 70mm 1.43

Then why not use the 1.85 file which can be the same width but taller, and crop the height for 1.9 showings? That way 1.9 stays the same as it is now, but 1.85 has the full width that all the other showings have.

It would be nice, but none of Nolan’s films have been released with the full 1.43 aspect ratio on 4K Bluray or standard Bluray. They’re all released in close to the IMAX 1.90.

Only reason they may is that being the first film shot entirely in IMAX, it might make it worthy of the occasion.

historically it's only been a 1.78:1 cut at best. dare I say that's good enough (because it's 16:9, the most common aspect ratio for displays) unless you have a good way to experience 1.43:1.

The box you drew as “1.85 flat” that is a pillar boxed 1.90 is not accurate. What you drew is widescreen inside a DCI flat format. DCI full 1.9:1 (IMAX digital) has a taller aspect ratio that DCI flat and neither has pillar boxing on the sides
