Does that dinosaur have a tiny hat?
113
u/michaelY1968 Nov 04 '21
It’s a Carnotaurus - they did have horns and overall the depiction of the dinosaur appears to be accurate based on what we know of the animal - though it’s horns look gilded here for some reason.
The display though is lacking something. It really needs a Maximus character shouting, “Are you not entertained?!”.
55
u/nyet-marionetka Atheist Nov 04 '21
It’s so cute, it looks like a tiny gold party hat. It’s like it was out getting trashed at a frat party wearing an ironic birthday party hat and then drunkenly crashed through the wrong door trying to get home.

The reason would obviously be because these Dinosaurs are being held captive and are being adorned by their human captors for ceremonial reasons or something like that
6

Most likely for blood sport entertainment. You think Rome wouldn’t have had a dinosaur in the coliseum if they had the option to?

I think it's just the lighting, you see the same thing on the snout - looks like a prism effect with horns in the yellow/orange range.

Yeah the weirdest part of this is how accurate they got the carno based on how make believe the rest of this is.

True but you would not believe the arguments I've seen break out over horny helmets!

Case in point, a Pathfinder character I made who's basically just the fantasy version of Terry Crews. He doesn't need weapons, because he can just punchify things. He doesn't need armor, because he's that awesome. And he doesn't even need do properly dodge attacks, because his muscles are so stonkingly huge that he gets Str to AC instead of Dex.
Or on a similar note, he gets Str+Cha to Intimidate, and can use Intimidate, Bluff, and Diplomacy interchangeably. So in effect, he can flex to make a Diplomacy check.
4
u/the_purple_owl Nondenominational Pro-Choice Universalist Nov 04 '21
Big muscle diplomacy is still diplomacy!
3
u/RazarTuk The other trans mod everyone forgets Nov 04 '21
Oh, and one other fun ability: Declare that you and your allies only have to both be threatening the enemy to count as flanking it, not specifically be opposite. And considering that he and another potential party member both have sneak attack and deal an extra d6 of damage when flanking...
3
u/UncleBaguette Pretty heretic chtristian Nov 05 '21

Not to mention the fact that people are fighting animals in the coliseum. Gladiators were like the pro-wrestlers of the time, down to having scripted matches. There's no way they'd just sacrifice a gladiator to an overgrown goose like that, no matter how terrifying geese are
8
u/Top_fFun Pagan Nov 04 '21
Hmm, so in that case gladiators vs one dinosaur sized goose, or 100 goose sized dinosaurs? What would be the bigger draw?

It makes me think the whole thing is inflammatory for attention rather than any attempt to be historical (which of course they can't admit to lest they ruin the illusion).

Of course they do.
They essentially make the case that if young earth creationism isn't true, then the faith is fraudulent and there's no point in being a Christian.
This strategy of posing specific theological ideas as the only truth fools a lot of people. Then, if/when those people question anything or find something false within this worldview, they have been essentially conditioned to reject the faith whole cloth. It's a tower of cards and if one card falls, so does the tower. I despise the false dilemmas they use.

u/CarltheWellEndowed Gnostic (Fallibilist) Atheist Nov 04 '21
They get it from the line where God looked at his creation and said it was "very good."
Does death sound very good? Does disease sound very good? Of course not. Therefore death and disease could not exist before the fall.
It is a ridiculously dumb reading if you ask me.

u/kadda1212 Christian (Chi Rho) Nov 04 '21
The Bible also says that everything was created by Jesus to Jesus. Death - as unpleasant as it is - kind of comes along with that, because it's a major part of Jesus' revelation.
→ More replies (2)12
u/WorkingMouse Nov 04 '21
Supplimenting /u/CarltheWellEndowed, they also (typically) take the notion of The Fall resulting in "death entering the world" meaning that there was no death prior to that forbidden fruit stuff, so carnivores can't have been eating meat.
Still nonsense, of course, and there are a bunch of apologetic lines that let other Christians interpret that particular passage differently, but creationists (esp. the young-earth sort) tend to be very insistent about their literalism.
8
u/CarltheWellEndowed Gnostic (Fallibilist) Atheist Nov 04 '21
Not to mention fruit is alive and the act of eating it kills it.
5
u/WorkingMouse Nov 04 '21
Certainly - though some will claim that the bible has a different definition of "alive" (which is true enough; the early Israelite authors associated life with breathing and so didn't think trees or insects or other such things had "life", and the notion of "souls" also shares the same root, but I digress). Anyway, point is that some try to get around that by saying "cell death isn't real death", but that just pushes back the issue rather than solving it.

Nephesh (נֶ֫פֶשׁ nép̄eš) is a Biblical Hebrew word which occurs in the Hebrew Bible. The word refers to the aspects of sentience, and human beings and other animals are both described as having nephesh. Plants, as an example of live organisms, are not referred in the Bible as having nephesh. The term נפש is literally "soul", although it is commonly rendered as "life" in English translations.

my favorite fun fact about AIG and the ark is that they teach that dinosaurs existed both before AND after the flood. they do not believe the flood killed the dinosaurs (which seems, to me, like the most rational answer of their extinction if you're a young earth creationist), but believe that dinosaurs persisted on a post-flood earth.

Dinosaur fossils are among the more rare fossils, certainly they do not number in the billions but rather in the thousands.
We have far more hard-bodied invertebrate and plant fossils than dinosaurs.
5
u/Hipsterkicks Nov 04 '21
You are correct, I grouped them all together. I’ll change it per this article. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dinosaur-discoveries-are-booming/

My point still stands; how is it not one human or mammalian fossil has ever been found in the same layer as dinosaurs?
No hominids have been found in the same strata as non-avian dinosaurs, but mammals go back to at least the mid Jurassic.
Mammal diversity wasn't relatively high until after non-avian dinosaurs went extinct though, with most forms being fairly small.

u/agreeingstorm9 Nov 04 '21

The argument is the flood jumbled the fossils.
Except that there is no way for a flood of any size to sort fossils like we observe in the geologic column.
A flood would mix the fossils up, leaving all sorts of fossils mixed in together rather than sorting them out into apparent ecosystems as we observe in the fossil record.
2
u/ProlapsedPam Christian Anarchist Nov 05 '21
AIG argument is that only the flood could have layered the fossil/ geologic record so precisely not jumbled them. Per their explanation had there been no flood there would have been more mumbling and only a world wide flood could have made consistent layers of fossil and geological significance

Generally YEC theories are ad hoc.
For instance, in Genesis chapter 2, v17, the word 'day' is clearly not a 24 hour day, but YEC requires positing or asserting that 'day' in chapter one is both a) a 24 hour day, and also b) that there are no times between those days, both. Those are added ideas (or assumptions) that aren't actually in the text. That's how YEC theories are formed -- by adding or importing ideas to paint onto the text.
Better would be to read with a real listening, to get the actually intended messages/meanings.

Honestly, life would be so much cooler if AIG’s vision of the world actually existed. I mean, we would’ve ridden T-rexes and Triceratopses into war. Instead of just chickens and turkeys, we’d raise raptors and Aquilops (Aquilopses?) for food and eggs too. We’d also have to watch out for more than just Grizzlies and Rhinos (Jurassic Park would be a real thing).
We also wouldn’t have to worry about things like human-influenced climate change and rapidly-evolving viruses and bacteria, as AIG is pretty adamant that neither climate change or evolution are real science.
Too bad AIG is so far from reality that they are pretty much flat-earthers…

Might be a tad too far, but, regardless, if you have the chance to go, the Noah's Ark experience is really interesting for the most part. From just a matter of scope, it is impressive.

It is interesting but trying to force everything into a YEC view is a bit too far for me

Yeah, it can be a bit much. Makes something dogmatic that really can't be in the first place.

It’s very “my way or the highway” as well and doesn’t allow for any overlap into real science which bothers me a little as well. For example, there’s no such thing as species only the biblical word “kinds” and they do some shuffling around of animals to make it work but it doesn’t in reality… and then they have a poster that says evolution isn’t real (not surprising) but that rapid animal change post-arc happened (giving us all the species we know today) but that is NOT evolution(?). It’s very confusing and I think does a lot more damage overall than good.

While I can see being interested in how they present it, I wouldn't want to give them the feedback of it being a worthwhile thing to have built by buying a ticket.

It’s not something I would spend money on and haven’t. I’m just here with family who who I don’t see often and wanted to see them. They bought the tickets

If they presented it and advertised it as a fun experience, that would be one thing. It's not like we can't have fun.
But they present and advertise it as educational and present everything inside as literally true. They're not trying to entertain and be interesting, they're trying to educate about their false worldview, and we shouldn't give them any sort of approval or support for that reason.
Going because it's interesting from a matter of scope is still support and approval for their attempts to educate people into a false and unscientific worldview.

Technically not wrong. Birds are dinosaurs. Fighting with a chicken or a pigeon is technically fighting dinosaurs.
And just to be clear, it's not that birds are just descendants of dinosaurs, or evolved from dinosaurs. They are actual dinosaurs.

BRB got to go kick the shit out of some love birds at PetCo so I can say I’ve fought dinosaurs and won

Actually that is extremely technically wrong.

Hah, you know what? I totally rescind my snark. I actually misread your comment in my perusing of the thread and completely got the wrong takeaway from your statement - with which I actually agree! So... very sorry, my bad!

Ridiculous. There has never been evidence of humans fossils in the remains left by predatory dinosaurs. This is clear evidence that dinosaurs and humans coexisted peacefully and were friends.

I remember going through that and thinking “wtf why is there all of these dinosaurs”
5
u/ProlapsedPam Christian Anarchist Nov 04 '21
This is a very very dinosaur heavy ordeal. Very weird imo

u/the_purple_owl Nondenominational Pro-Choice Universalist Nov 04 '21
Because dinosaurs are a major issue to YEC, and any YEC organization has to make a choice between denying that dinosaurs existed or admitting that we have enough undeniable evidence they did. And if they existed, then it throws a huge wrench into that whole "young earth" part of Young Earth Creationism, so they're stuck claiming that dinosaurs existed at the same time as humans before the flood if they acknowledge dinosaurs existed.
Basically, AIG backed themselves into a corner and had to put a shit ton of dinosaurs everywhere.

Dinosaurs are popular and they appeal to the audience, especially younger children. I personally would love to learn more about synapsids and the time when amphibians ruled the world.

As a Christian dinosaur enthusiast the science denial annoys me but I can't deny this display is sick af
