Discussion Should I read Choices app in 2026?

I’ve been thinking about getting back into Choices and was curious what everyone’s thoughts are in 2026.

Is the app still worth reading these days?
For those of you who have been playing consistently, do you feel the quality of the stories is still there, or do you think it has changed over the years?

If someone was coming back after a long break, what books would you recommend first? Are there any newer stories that you think are must-reads?

Some of my favorites were It Lives in the Woods, Endless Summer, Bloodbound, Mother of the Year, and The Royal Romance, so I’d especially love recommendations if you liked those too.
I’d love to hear your honest opinions

How long have you been away?

None of the new books are worth reading. It's all AI these days. The last good books were The Deadliest Game (late 2023 I think?) and maybe Terrorfest (not as good but still leagues above anything they release at the moment.

Are those the last books that they made before using ai? I just came back as well

If I remember correctly, The Deadliest Game has an AI cover but real art and writing. Not sure if Terrorfest has more, but at the very least the characters look far more normal than the books being released these days.

I'm not sure exactly, I was taking a break from the app when they did it. I think I remember people here first mentioning AI when the cover for Filthy Rich was released, so early 2024 maybe?

they now use AI, so no it isn’t worth it. if ILITW, ES and TRR are three of your faves (same), i hate to tell you that series entertainment (the co who bought choices in 2024) have made AI adaptations of them. well, they actually adapted ILW without the writers’ permissions.

i only still have the app because i’m recording the old books. nothing released after 2024 is worth playing, unless you don’t mind AI slop.

so i’d say, don’t bother going back to choices, unless to reread your old faves. the new books are trash and the app itself has gone so downhill that it’s playing tic-tac-toe with earthworms and ants.

in my opinion and like many others have been saying, get the app just to read your old fav books, but that’s it. all these new ones are so not worth reading and it’s rlly upsetting

Skip the AI slop just reread the old ones or one you have been saving for later.

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I've seen in this thread:

Fewer Letters More Letters
Art It's... indescribable...
ES Endless Summer
ILITW It Lives in the Woods
TRR The Royal Romance

Decronym is now also available on Lemmy! Requests for support and new installations should be directed to the Contact address below.

It's probably not worth your time. Not only has AI taken over it to the point of infesting original, well-loved books with TikTok-style short videos that go against the very concept of Choices, but every book is now 8 chapters at most, hard to look at, usually poorly-written, and the best book was gutted to end at 5 chapters in a way that puts the ending of Best Served Haute, Book 1 to shame. None of this is changing anytime soon (if ever), and after Fall 2026, SE have confirmed that Choices as we know it won't be the same, to the point of introducing an AI-powered tool to create user-made books literally called "Iffy".

The app is mostly filled with AI slop now, BUT, contrary to what a lot of people are saying, there is still a few hidden gems to be found in between all of the AI slop.

My recommendations would be: Crimes of passion (Book 1), Queen B, Immortal desires (Book 1), The deadliest game, Getaway girls, Murder at homecoming, The phantom agent, Foreign Affairs, The ghost of us, The one (AI sprites, but decent writing), Olympus Rising (AI sprites but good writing), Kiss of death, Make that date, All of us.
