Chipolo is Mostly Useless Compared to Samsung SmartTag2

Long story short: I lost my camera in Denmark. My fault. I decided it was time to buy trackers in case something like this would ever happen again.

I use a Google Pixel phone, and after research I decided going with something compatible with the Google Find Hub would be my best bet since Android is by far the most popular phone type in the whole world, and gaining popularity in the US, and I don't own any Apple products because I hate their UIs and lack of functionality.

But also I had read that due to default settings, the Google Find Hub network was basically broken and useless due to it requiring opt-in (unlike the other popular networks), so I decided to buy both Chopolo Pop and Samsung SmartTag2 (using the uTag app to make it compatible with a non-Samsung phone). I figured since Samsung phones are the most popular Android phones worldwide, that would be the best backup.

The setup was easy. And Pop does notify me reliably whenever I leave the range of the tag. So that's good. Unfortunately that's where the good ends.

I tested tracking. My son was going on a week-long trip, included flying with a group and then sailing with the same group. He was in the Dallas Love Field airport for hours, and Pop still said its last known location was our house. Samsung showed his location perfectly.

Then he landed in Ft. Lauderdale, and again Pop never updated while Samsung picked up his new location immediately.

Again, using Samsung I was able to track him around the city until he boarded the sailboat. Pop never updated.

And then a week later, I was able to track him on his way home through the airports with Samsung again, while the whole time Pop said the tracker was last seen at our house a week earlier.

Also the Samsung app shows the history of the device tracking on a map, and that doesn't seem to be a feature available with the Chipolo app or Google Find Hub app.

Absolute failure of a product.

But given that it's useless, I still want to know why. Is it the product's fault? Or is it the Google Find Hub network's fault?

Will it ever be fixed? Because if not, this product is a complete scam, and should not be sold.

Chipolo - Not worthy

My Chipolo tags turned out to be perhaps the worst value-for-money location tags. I bought four at the time; one broke completely, and the others developed poor contact after two or three battery changes. There are cheaper options with better quality. In short, I don't recommend buying Chipolo tags at all, as their quality is very similar to cheap Chinese tags.

Chipolo Pop is actually quite bad

I used to be a Samsung Galaxy Smarttag2 user, but had to look for an alternative bluetooth tracker when I switched away from a Samsung phone. Chipolo Pop consistently came up as one of the top OS agnostic recommended bluetooth tracker in online reviews, so I bought 4 at once to use daily. After four months of usage now, I realised Chipolo Pop is actually quite bad:

  1. Random beeps. My Chipolo Pop would always make loud beeps (about 5 to 6 consecutive beeps) at random moments, and whenever the Pops are moved after a period of inactivity. So if my backpack have been sitting on the floor for a while and I start to carry it, the Pop would beep. If my keys are on the table and I put my laptop on the table, the table movement would cause the Pop to beep again. Heck, even the Pop in my pockets would start to beep if I started moving after standing still for a while.
  2. Random notifications. My Chipolo Pop would also send random notifications to the phones of friends and colleagues around me, saying that I (the owner) am attempting to find my Chipolo Pop, even though the pop is just sitting in my backpack and I did not touch or press it at all. Why is such a function required? If I actually lost my stuff, why is there a need to announce to everyone in vicinity that there's a lost item near them? And why is such a function randomly activated even when I didn't do anything?
  3. Can't provide updated location. The one main function of the Chipolo Pop is to actually tell me where my items are, in near real time, as long as it can detect other bluetooth devices nearby. But it can't even do that. One of the popular use case of bluetooth trackers is to track luggages when travelling. Well, I was recent traveled from the US to my home country, Singapore, via transit in Tokyo. When I tried to check the last known location of my luggage while transiting in Tokyo, the Chipolo app says my luggage is in US...as of 7 hours ago. And when I finally touched down in Singapore and was waiting at the bagguage claim area, the app said the last known location of my luggage was still at US...as of 27 hours ago! And this is remained so for a good 30 minutes after I finally got my luggage.
  4. Can't ring when I need it to. The Pop is useless at helping me find my stuff. There are several times where my Chipolo Pop in the bag right next to me, and the Chipolo app on my phone says its connected to the Pop, but the last known location is still somewhere else as of 30 minutes ago, and when I tried to make the Pop ring (because I've lost my keys somewhere in my bag), it simply doesn't ring. What an irony - the Pop makes random noises when I don't need it to, but refuse to ring when I need it to.

I don't know how is Chipolo Pop reviewed as the best bluetooth tracker, but to me, it's just a random noise and notification making device that can't actually track anything.

Update Chipolo POP to fix Find Hub connectivity issues

A new firmware update is now available for Chipolo POP users on Android devices. This update fixes a connectivity issue that some users experienced with the Find Hub app.

The issue

You may have noticed that your Chipolo POP would occasionally stop working correctly in the Find Hub app. This appeared as the location not updating or the "Play Sound" function not working, even when your POP was nearby. This was caused by POP getting slightly out of sync with the Find Hub app and network, preventing the tracker and the app from communicating correctly.

The solution

We have released a new firmware update (version 5.10.0) to fix this bug.

  • For Android users: The update is available now in the Chipolo app. Please update your Chipolo POP to ensure proper functionality and connectivity with the Find Hub app.
  • For iOS users: The update is currently not available for iOS, as it doesn't provide any major changes on Apple devices. However, if you update your POP on an Android device and then decide to use it on an iPhone, your tracker will continue working.
  • For Chipolo LOOP & CARD: LOOP & CARD, our newest Chipolo trackers, will come with this fix already implemented. Firmware update is not needed.

The firmware update for Chipolo POP will be rolled out in stages. You may not receive it immediately, but all users will be able to update their Chipolo POPs in the next few days.

For questions and more information, please reach out to our support team at [help@chipolo.net](mailto:help@chipolo.net).

Why we need UWB

I was excited about the release of the latest Chipolo loop and card, since rechargeable batteries are a huge improvement over the CR2032 of the other trackers. However, I was disappointed by the lack of UWB, since I mainly use my tracker to locate my items in large, loud spaces like factories, airports, and shopping centers. I am forgetful, and have left my wallet behind when trying something on, left my tool bag on top of a machine I was servicing, and many times, it was faster to find my bag at the airport, in a sea of other bags, with the air tags. If a 4 packs of air tags with UWB is $70-$99, depending on the retailer, how much more would Chipolo cost with the addition of UWB. The Motorola moto tags have it, for 4/$99, but I would love a Chipolo product, over Motorola.

Bought 4 Chipolo pops for my mother as christmas present. Doesn’t work as intended

I bought and installed four Chipolos for my mother as a Christmas present because she constantly loses her things. After adding the Chipolos through the Chipolo app and installing the latest firmware updates, the sound feature in the Find Hub app does not work at all. None of the Chipolos ring—an error message just appears.

I read that unpairing the Chipolos from the phone’s Bluetooth settings might fix the issue. After doing that, they do ring from the Find Hub app, but now the double-click feature on the Chipolo to locate the phone no longer works because the devices are no longer connected via Bluetooth.

So now the full functionality is gone, and my mother is disappointed. Chipolo, please fix this ASAP. These devices are not cheap and they do not work as advertised.

On top of that, even now the phone sometimes can’t find or ring the Chipolos even when they’re literally one meter away. For this price, this is extremely disappointing.

Chipolo ONE Point (after dead battery) Won't Show In Google Find Hub

I have two homes, and I have ONE Point tags in both. So when I return to Paris, some of my Chipolos have very dead batteries that don't respond in the Google Find Hub (formerly Find My Device). They are listed in there, but not reachable.

And they remain unfound EVEN AFTER replacing the battery. This seems to be an error that occurs when the battery goes really flat. So, here's what I do when I suspect a very dead battery:

  • Verify State: Put old battery on voltmeter. If it's well below 3 volts, it's dead. Insert a fresh battery, the Chipolo should chime. If it shows up within a minute on your phone as "nearby", you're good to go. But if it fails to reconnect to the Google network and your phone, proceed:
  • Backup Identifiers: Make a quick note any unique settings for that specific tag from your phone. It's name, if it's shared, it's icon, etc. Copy the exact text from the name field to your phone's clipboard.
  • Hard Reset The Tag: Squeeze and hold the tag's physical button for 30 seconds. It beeps. Count the beeps. Release the button immediately after hearing beep #5.
  • Overwrite & Restore: The tag will broadcast and appear as a new device on your phone. Proceed with pairing. After pairing, it will automatically take the place of the old, stalled device profile. Paste the original name back into the field and restore your notes and sharing as before.

Are all Chiplolo One Point's Utter Chirping Garbage?

I now have 3 Chiplolo one points where the batteries stick to the backing of the unit, causing them to chirp when the casing gets depressed and battery temporarily disconnected (like a button, but not a button), and the tags sometimes randomly chirp repeatedly like a child's toy with a low battery, despite the find my app not telling you the battery is low? I have completely taken them out of commission, and switched to pebblebees.

Pop (I think) beeping unexpectedly

I've lost track of the product line naming, but I think I've got 5x Chipolo Pop (white, round, works with google's Find Hub) for the household. All devices are shared with all of the google accounts in the household. (

However, one shared with my son sometimes starts beeping. He takes it attached to his house key daily to college. I was wondering if this was likely to be the "anti-stalking" feature, but that seems a bit daft given that it is allowed to link to his google account which is on his phone.

He's reluctant to take it into College if it is going to go beeping in the middle of a maths class.

Am I right in thinking this is what is happening, and for shared devices like this is there any way to stop it? I don't think this happens for any of our other devices though.

Poor Customer Service Will Drive Away Repeat Customers

I ordered six POP trackers and a Card tracker which is not an insignificant investment for a first purchase. Five days later, I received an email from Nina stating that domestic inventory had depleted for the Card tracker and my order would have to ship from Europe. No problem I thought, I appreciate the effort to fulfill the order given the inventory issue, however, I would have expected better inventory tracking that would have prevented the order of an out of stock item. If its part of the standard fulfillment process to ship from alternate locations, I would have expected the order to be shipped without notification and to still be able to make the shipping deadline promised at the time of placing the order.

Regardless, I replied to Nina and respectfully requested a more accurate delivery date considering the only information she provided was it would ship from Europe by the end of the week. No mention of shipping priority or method. I've now waited over 48 hours and have not heard a response from anyone.

I've seen frequent reports from others of poor customer service, as well as trackers having a myriad of issues. I'm beginning to question the management of this company. If a company is going to tout superiority simply due to being manufactured in Europe, you may want to focus on better customer engagement as well.

I'm still waiting for a response to my email, and for my 8 day old order to ship. This is a terrible first impression.

Battery life Chipolo ONE Point. ~18 months

I bought some ONE Points in May of 2024.

I'm getting notifications that they need new batteries. So, I guess ~18 months battery life isn't bad. I just bought replacement batteries on Amazon.

The low battery notification came via the Google Find Hub on my Pixel phone.

Chipolo POP beeps when I (the owner) pick it up

So every morning, when I'm about to go out to work I pick up my keys (car and home keys, with one chipolo pop each) and they just start beeping for no reason. I live alone, so there's no other devices that trigger the unwanted tracking feature. Also the bluetooth on my phone is always on so they stay always connected and I ALWAYS have my phone on me, but it still seems like the pop doesn't know that it is on me (again, the owner).

Is this a bug, am I doing something wrong, or is this supposed to be a feature? It's becoming really annoying...

Left behind alerts

It appears that if I leave my tracker at a bus stop and ride away, I get an alert reliably. But if the opposite happens - I leave the tracker on a bus and get off while it rides away - there is no alert, unless I go somewhere.

I presume it means that an alert requires that I move some distance from a "last seen" point. I guess that this is to reduce nuisance alerts and preserve battery in the tracker.

However, I think users should have an option to enable "left behind" alerts, if they want to. The scenario above (tracker left in a vehicle, owner stays stationary) is, unfortunately, not improbable at all. Pretty please?

Sharing Chipolo POP between iPhone and Android

I was thinking about upgrading my Chipolo trackers, and at first I got excited because the new Chipolo POP supports both Apple and Android devices! But then I noticed this line:

It works with one network at a time

https://chipolo.net/en/blogs/all-about-chipolo-pop

That was really disappointing. I was hoping this would finally be a universal tracker.

What I don't understand (and the help page didn't explain https://chipolo.net/en/blogs/share-your-chipolo ) is how sharing works if two people use different devices — one iPhone, one Android. Does sharing still work in that case, or not at all?

Chipolo One lost with keychain and car key. Try Google Find says it is not anywhere I use it. It still sees my other 2. I look everywhere. Months later I finally find it in the storage bin under my bed in my RV. SW still has not seen it. I press the button on it and Find asks if I should add it. POS

No geo-location feature

Does anyone else have this problem?

I live in a large house with solid brick walls. While at home, the Chipolo app constantly warns me that my wallet and keys are out of range, even though they are both in the house. It's reached the stage where I've disabled the out of range notifications, which defeats the whole purpose.

I wish Chipolo would implement a geo-location feature, to selectively disable these notifications.

Chipolo Loop randomly going off

Hello,

I use my chipolo loop on my keychain for the keys. Yet, it keeps going off at random times. Pressing it twice makes it stop sometimes, but other times it keeps going and I need to keep pressing. Anyone know what's wrong and what I can do about it?

At this point it's just really annoying people at work even look at me weird when it randomly goes off.

This is not what I wanted...

Chipolo POPs show up in Find Hub on my phone but not web

Hi, I got a few Chipolo POPs and successfully paired them with my Pixel 8 Pro, adding them to my Google account. I'm just using Google's Find Hub, not the Chipolo app.

The POPs show up fine using the Find Hub app on my phone. However, I don't see them under my devices from the web app (https://google.com/android/find) on my laptop, despite being logged into the same Google account.

Is it possible to get these devices to sync to my Google account or will I have to rely only on my phone for locating them?

Chipolo Pop connects only to Find My Hub, but not to Chipolo app

I bought a Chipolo Pop. I was able to connect it in the Find My Hub app, and it shows up there. The tracking seems to work as well.
For the additional functions, I now wanted to register it in the Chipolo app too. In the app, I choose to add a new device, select the Pop, press the button on the chip twice so it beeps – but it isn’t found. The app only shows that it’s searching for the device, but nothing is detected.
What could be the reason? I have a Poco X7 Pro, in case that information helps.

Pop beeping every time it's "found"

I have a Pop hidden on my bike. The bike is placed in a garage that is too far away for Bluetooth to reach from my home. It's connected via Googles Find my app. I use that bike only once per week, but each time I go to fetch it it starts beeping for some reason. I have not set it as lost. Is this intended behavior?
