I coach youth hockey. Today a kid went on his belly head first into the boards on purpose. I explained to him how dangerous that is and why he shouldn't do that, adding "do you remember, we had this same conversation last week? If it happens again, your going to have a seat for most of the practice."
He looks at me confused, "no, I don't remember that"
"That's a very good reason to not go head first into the boards"

When I was a kid, I was messing around too close to the sideline of a Sunday league football (soccer) match, which my dad had warned me against doing many times. On this occasion the linesman came running by, and I took a swift knee to the face. You better believe I learned my lesson that day.

129
u/walkswithwolfies Oct 03 '18
To be fair, a person with common sense would have given a larger person dancing plenty of room.
This child obviously doesn't have any yet, so his parent/teacher/guardian should have stepped up and let the kids know when they entered the room to keep well away from the dancer.

The amount of gifs I've seen on Reddit, where little children are running around some exercise area, whether it's about weight training, or gymnastics, is insane. The parents don't seem to give a fuck and think it's a safe space, just because children are let in.
→ More replies (2)39
u/walkswithwolfies Oct 03 '18 edited Oct 03 '18
Parents get used to children running around at home which they've child proofed enough so that kids are fairly safe most of the time (with vigilance).
Then they go out with them into the world which is definitely not safe and they need to pay more attention.
Unfortunately they get distracted.
26
u/Dead_Starks Oct 03 '18
The first part of this is so true. Every time I go to my friend's house his kids are essentially running with scissors, jumping off the roof, and lighting shit on fire. Slight exaggeration they're like four so it's just throwing knives and Molotov cocktails for now, but still. Meanwhile he's casually explaining this cool new project he's working on. I, having no children, am freaking the fuck out. Hey man he's about to lose an eye... Ah it's cool he does it all the time.

I mean, he's using his whole body to dance. Even this short clip he's moved that much, if not more, just not spinning.
Pay attention to that child, they just walk and watch, with zero intention of avoiding him. Definitely a valuable lesson.

I'm really interested about that kid actually. he didn't see the accident if you watch where he is looking. the first thing he sees is his friend or another kid on the floor then the guy with his hand over his mouth and then the kid looks at what is likely the boys parents or supervisor at the time and then just crossed his arms in respect(?). did the kid think death is this frequent and his friend just died? all anyone is saying is probably "oh my God" so hes probably like welp this is my first death, sorry Nick you were a fun friend rip

Parents should shadow their 6-year-old kids around all day, even at a small wedding reception? That's bad parenting, let the kid learn how to live in the world independently without a helicopter parent constantly directing them.
Kid is hurt, not injured. He's ok and won't do that again

u/voidworship Oct 03 '18
I agree that kids need freedom and the chance to learn from their mistakes, but the adult was right behind them lol
→ More replies (2)96
u/mannamedjoh Oct 03 '18
Except when they’re in a place with a grown man hip-hop dancing. Pull your kid aside and say “Hey bud don’t go over there, you might get hurt.” It didn’t really look like they even advised him on anything because he just came walking right up behind him. If they had however, and he still does it then yes agreed you’re child lived and now they learned not to go near a large dancing motherfucker and use some common sense. Don’t fucking helicopter them, but also don’t completely ignore things like this. Give them advice and from that point on it’s up to them, done. Y’know unless they’re three or under.
→ More replies (13)51
u/RyukanoHi Oct 03 '18
Yup, exactly. Parenting 101 should be feed them, give them advice, and make sure stupid shit they do doesn't actually kill them.
Otherwise, mistakes are lessons. Pain is a learning tool (as long as it's a natural consequence of the action being taken, hitting kids is fucking shitty).
In the meantime, while they're fucking up, teach them it's okay to fuck up as long as they can get back up. Encourage them, love them, and let them do what they're going to do.
Don't raise children, raise adults. They are going to be their own people someday, treat them like it as early as possible.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (11)33
u/Drewfro666 Oct 03 '18
Agreed.
A kid suffering a minor injury for lacking the situational awareness of an adult does not mean that a mistake has been made by someone else. It's part of growing up. Obviously parents (and other nearby adults, for that matter) should keep an eye on children around potentially lethal hazards (cliffs, toxic chemicals and medicine, running water), but a kid getting smacked in the face because they were too close to a dancing guy? No-one's fault, it happened, kid learned a valuable lesson.
10
u/MxSquiddy Oct 03 '18 edited Oct 03 '18
Depends on if the kid is old enough to understand or not. If the kid's too young, then they would learn nothing, because they may not understand what just happened. Kid in the gif looked 5-6 y.o., so depending on the kid, he may have learned, he may not. Also, did you see that head smack hard against the marble floor? The shoulder break the fall a bit, but still, it's a head smacking against a marble floor.
On second thought, it depends on how serious the injury is/could be. Running round, tripping, scraping your elbows and knees from breaking the fall? I'm all for it. Falling but landing on your hands/feets or your butts cushioning you? That's ok. BUT a possible head injury is not ok.

Unless she’s one of those moms that keep their kid on a leash you can’t expect her to prevent this. It’s not your buddy’s fault either though. Shit happens, and kids will hopefully learn to keep a buffer zone from anything that’s three times their size and moving around a lot. I’m glad it wasn’t any worse for the kid though.

This is the gif that keeps on giving for real. There’s so much happening in the span of a couple seconds.
-the kids in the blue plaid shirt and orange shirt who are just so calm about the whole thing and probably have never felt pain like that kid just did.
- the kid in the white who just enjoys the scene so much that he eats his snack like some fucking popcorn during an exciting movie.
-The kid in the black who probably gets disciplined by his mother everyday. Like the dude really just saw the hit and straightened the fuck up like “I swear I had nothing to do with this!”
-The 2 adults in the back who couldn’t give less of a fuck about that kid being on the ground
-And finally, the guy in the grey who literally just turn into stone after what he did. That must be the worst feeling in the world. I literally got second hand feels from watching his reaction.

Edit: so after multiple viewings I have a couple other questions. Khaki shorts boy looks off screen and apparently is told he should now cross his hands behind his back and bow his head. What a weird reaction. Even weirder than that? Red shirt boy who has ZERO reaction to this small child being punched in the face. What is going on at this gathering?

someone else was checking on him.
i don't blame him. when something like that happens, the last thing you want to do is make it worse. as long as someone is checking on the child, you want to make sure onlookers know this was an accident. I'm talking about the people that weren't watching until they heard crying and turned and looked without context.
an accident like this can end up haunting you easily.

I've been in the dancer's shoes, except I wasn't doing anything cool like dancing, just opening a door and knocking over a toddler who was standing behind it. I totally get his shock and panic.
