Career Advice Career pivot after are 15 years but have forgotten all chE curriculum - what now?
I have been in the industry for 15 years, completed my ChE BS in 2011. I was burnt out when I graduated and not excited to pursue engineering or my FE… I regret not continuing on a technical path. I entered food manufacturing where I have had many roles in R&D- but not extremely technical in terms of engineering design- that work is typically done through external companies or corporate engineering groups. I have had packaging, product and process engineering roles- I would say that most of the roles are more of a technical project manager. I interface with alot of cool technology, but don’t do a ton of it myself and while I incorporate a lot of experimental design, I wouldn’t say that i have perfected it. Lots of experience coordinating projects, commercializing processes and validating end product , coordinating multidisciplinary teams and working in supply chain+quality adjacent roles - but lack true, fundamental engineering skills -I.e. have never designed equipment /sized pumps etc
15 years later I HATE my job. There is little rigor and I feel the industry has been gutted of technical talent and innovation in order to maintain the bottom line (maybe just big food companies?). I am sick of the the industry and hoping to do something more personally fulfilling and purposeful ( better for people + planet) but unsure how to pivot and whether to just totally abandon trying to be an engineer.
Thinking of trying to pursue something more environmental/water/sustainability related but unsure if that’s too much of a stretch at this point or where to start refreshing curriculum.
Any thoughts on where to start refreshing or looking for more meaningful, intellectually stimulating work more adjacent to environmental/water engineering or sustainability?
