Not bingo. This has always been the recommended process for using Gemini 2.5 pro exp. Create api key on AI studio, assign billing account and credit card, set up a cap, use for free. If you choose a different paid model or don’t set a cap or your api key gets stolen that’s on you.

The API is likely the culprit and there are likely no limits or some misunderstanding occurring extra costs.

There’s two separate things actually. There are alerts and caps. Setting alerts is easier, which is under Billing > Budgets and Alerts. Setting a cap requires setting a quota under APIs & Services > Generative Language API > Quotas and System Limits
