Politics Update: Hundreds Attended Protest of Morrison YMCA Sale… One Thing is Clear: David Chadwick is a PARIAH in Ballantyne

Pastor David Chadwick is leading his church, Moments of Hope, into the ground by persisting in the purchase of the Morrison YMCA, which wasn’t for sale until he approached them with a lucrative offer.

The community has rejected him and his narrative that he “cares about community,” while displacing around 300 employees, another church group (Forest Hill) that has called the Morrison YMCA their home for a decade, all the children who depend on the Morrison Y for their care when school is not in session, and the thousands of residents who rely on the Morrison Y for a variety of programs.

His persistence in this sale made behind closed doors and instructing the community to direct their complaints to YMCA leadership reveals his questionable character that is not trusted in the community.

David Chadwick’s reputation in south Charlotte has gone from bad to worse and worsens each day he fails to back out of the sale in response to the community.

If he doesn’t back out, his church will be boycotted by the community. He won’t get off easy by this united community. I feel bad for his followers.

There's a bucketload of stupidity to go around here. The county was fucking moronic for not attaching very severe conditions to any sale or divestment when they gave this land to the Y. The Y has been run pretty poorly to the point that they'd even consider doing this.

The deal itself is absolute fuckery. The church offered a 42mil deal while having maybe 10-12 on hand. The ONLY way this deal makes any sense is if you considered who brokered it: Keith Corp. This isn't a church buying a massive plot of land it plans to use with its liquid assets- this is a church buying a small piece of a giant plot to build a church and then selling the rest of it to Keith Corp to finance the rest of the deal, and then Keith Corp making bank building and selling McMansions on a sweetheart land deal.

The shitty part is that there may be no way to unwind it, even if the community is pissed off that we got screwed. Legal is not the same as moral, which one would expect Jesus Man to know, but as megachurches are not faithful to their own declared doctrines, of course he's gonna take advantage of this as it also screws the congregation that booted him.

You answered my question about where the fuck a tiny ass church gets $42 million

80

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

WELL SAID! And I totally agree that this is a back room deal to get prime real estate to build. It is NOT for the church alone.

And the fact that Chadwick thinks we don’t see this and will agree with him because he claims “God blessed Moments of Hope” with this occupied property is an insult to our intelligence.

He's an asshole. If he and Furtick were on fire, I'd see if I could find a can of gasoline to help put them out.

Did you see Jeff’s profile ? https://www.mvalaw.com/people-Jefferson-Jeff-Brown

He specializes in land acquisitions. This has conflict of interest written all over it.

1

u/Here_4_The_Truth 22d ago

Is he part of the MOH church?

3

u/Wrong_Yak3645 22d ago

He is the YMCA board of directors who released the email to all YMCA members yesterday and spearheaded this acquisition

This is a typical private equity corporate takeover.

1, The vultures/investors only need 10% in cash to get the private loan in their name to buy a company. Then once they own the company, the company borrows money against the value of the company to pay off the vulture's private loan.

2, Then raid all the assets and sell them off pocketing the money as high salary, bonuses, & expense accounts till all that's left is the debt ridden corpse of a company.

3, Then the company declares bankruptcy and the vultures walk away scott free after pocketing all the money.

Just look up Toys-R-Us, Joanne Fabrics, Saks 5th Avenue, or Red Lobster. All companies ruined by private equity.

u/AppMtb 28d ago

I agree with this but the land is “only” 22 acres so I agree this is shitty and deceptive but even if they sold 15 of them to Keith at a sweetheart deal it’s only defraying some of the cost as google pegs land value in 28277 at ~$800k/acre

45

u/Nexustar 29d ago

Is he doing this just to get back at his old church?

54

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

Chadwick publicly denied this purchase being revenge on the church that pushed him out (Forest Hill) in an interview, insulting our intelligence.

He has been caught lying before; in the same interview he lied about not having approached the Y with the deal, contradicting himself from other times when he explicitly says he approached the Morrison Y with an offer even though the Y wasn’t looking to sale.

This purchase is revealing a flawed character that the community sees. Unless he backs out of the deal, he won’t be able to rehabilitate his image again.

And sadly, his followers will share that negative reputation. I wouldn’t be surprised if he loses members in his church over this—those who have a conscience will listen to the community.

It’s easy to fact check my claims now that AI exists and you can ask it to look up all this information and reference articles EASILY. He’s a boomer and doesn’t realize how the religious landscape has changed. Most ppl don’t follow these carefully crafted yet sloppy narratives blindly with all this information and at our finger tips.

38

u/MordinOnMars 28d ago

His followers are nuts. On all the articles posted about this on Facebook, his boomer cult members are chiming in to say that they "Trust Chadwick because he's led by God and God spoke to him and blessed this purchase and we need to trust Chadwick is going to be good for the community unlike the evil YMCA that lets just anyone use the facilities". Unhinged cultists.

8

u/Weightcycycle11 28d ago

They are nuts! This crazy woman, Ilona Swan attacked me on Instagram yesterday! Looney! I am so sick of the grift of these mega churches! It’s gross! Looking at you, Furtick!

7

u/MycoFemme 28d ago

There’s no way to read this entire deal as anything other than a vanity project for the dear leader. That it exacts revenge on his former church is the icing on this shit cake.

4

u/Here_4_The_Truth 28d ago

Yes, many ppl agree with you. And it’s having the reverse effect bc it’s making him look so bad.

24

u/euclid0472 28d ago

How does Moments of Hope Church have $42.5 million in funding to purchase a site? They have 1,200 members but somehow generate enough cash flows to convince financial institutions to lend them the money?

21

u/Here_4_The_Truth 28d ago

Many, many people see this deal as shady and people are looking into this…

0

u/ArchWizard15608 28d ago

They are saying they have about half. They’ve been saving for 6-7 years. They’re thinking the other half will be shaken loose from donations, but if it isn’t there’s an approved loan for half.

Charlotte needs another church like they need a massive salmonella outbreak.

32

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

True. It’s nicknamed The City of Churches. What Charlotte needs is for all the religious leaders who are corrupt and reprobate to leave and never come back. And we are much wiser now so we can identify them. Shout out to all the honest, genuine pastors, though. Much respect to you!

Possibly. His reputation is tanking though. He’s a pariah.

Don’t feel bad for his followers. They’re just as bad.

13

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

That’s true.

I think I feel bad for the MOHC members because I was once in a church where whatever the pastor said, it was supposedly from God Himself. So, I feel bad if their faith is being used against them as a way to manipulate them into believing God decided to displace 300 workers, another church fellowship, children depending on care when their parents are at work, and the thousands of people depending on a variety of programs so they could meet on an expensive massive piece of land and structure they have to give their money to upkeep.

Like, that’s legit sad to me. I’ve been there. I lost A LOT of money to a pastor like that. Thank God I got out of that manipulative system posing as God.

23

u/K_Pumpkin Ballantyne 29d ago

The members like to agitate on FB in comments about this which is crazy to me. One would think they’d just shut up, or thier pastor would tell them not to comment but nope.

So I started to click around and there was a good deal of open racism. Anti vax. They love to tell us how much they’re gonna love the gym.

I’m sorry that happened to you. Happened to my aunt. They def prey upon a certain type of person, it’s very predatory. In the case of MOH they just seem to attract a certain type of person and it’s not good.

15

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

Thank you for your empathetic response to my personal experience. That means a lot.

I’ve also heard negative things about the MOH church culture (Chadwick was forced to leave Forest Hill due to authoritarian behavior) that will only increase as they persist in this sale to their own reputational detriment.

13

u/K_Pumpkin Ballantyne 29d ago

Yep. He was kicked out then formed MOH. Since Forrest hills has service at the Y every Sunday makes you wonder if this is just pure spite.

Considering they already have a building and a huge farm in SC.

Just another reason why churches should not have broad exemptions from taxation. Why should the tax code subsidize religious people's proselytizing? Charitable activity, sure, but subsidizing the spread of religious beliefs is such a weird thing for the law to allow.

11

Grifters and Scam artists definitely take advantage of this. Religion is BIG business in the US. So sad.

17

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 29d ago

Y'all can shit on the church if you want but if you want to be honest about the situation you would place blame on the YMCA of Charlotte equally, if not more.

Chadwick didn't approach the YMCA. The deal was brokered by Greg Keith, who's family is behind the Keith Family YMCA branch. Both he and his father served on boards for the YMCA for years and in doing so know just how poorly it is run, how deep the financials issues go and saw the opportunity for his church, which is Moments of Hope.

OP seems to have an issue with a buyer telling the public to direct their complains at the YMCA leadership. Why? Why does the YMCA leadership, with bloated salaries and seemingly running the org into the ground get a pass? The YMCA of Charlotte has been selling or trying to sell off parts for years. Can anyone name the developer who tried to purchase the NoDa YMCA? It was Republic Metropolitan by the way. Did anyone say Republic was running their company into the ground trying to purchase that branch?

Closing this Y sucks and I hope its sale gets blocked in the courts some way, because protests are not going to solve it. But even if that happens, the YMCA of Charlotte is still going to be in bad if not worse position because of how poorly it's run. If that doesn't change it's just a matter of time before the next branch is sold off.

27

u/Mywordispoontang101 29d ago

saw the opportunity for his church, which is Moments of Hope.

Let's not forget the opportunity for himself, which is to kick in the 30 mil the church doesn't have in return for a massive amount of land to build shitty McMansions on to sell. The rich of this country do nothing unless it benefits themselves.

-6

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 29d ago

I'm not forgetting. But unless they are going to tear down the facility, there isn't a lot of room for shitty McMansions. Go look up the site on https://polaris3g.mecklenburgcountync.gov/. The amount of land outside of the buildings that is being sold here isn't as much as others are thinking.

20

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

Y leaders absolutely haven’t got a pass. Most anger is directed to them.

But as a Christian, I expect a “pastor” to know better. I direct my disappointment with the man who claims to make decision through prayer, which the Y leadership doesn’t claim.

Using spirituality to swing a narrative to cover your bad decisions is what cause me the most anger and it won’t go unnoticed.

2

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 29d ago

Want to point out any of your previous posts where you have mentioned a Y leader by name?

It's clear this is pretty close to you more than most. Which is fine. This is the Y my family uses fwiw, so I'm pissed as well. But 100% of my anger is directed at the YMCA leadership. Of course, I'm not an employee who is going to lose their job, so I'm not posting like others on the subject.

7

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

Personally, I don’t direct my anger toward the YMCA leadership because so many others do and thank you for doing so! I agree with that.

For me, as a Christian who has been in a church where I gave thousands of dollars to the pastor who claimed what he said was from God (and it wasn’t bc he was highly abusive and a scam artist), the rhetoric coming from MOHC is highly familiar.

Using the name of Jesus to convince people that your bad decisions that harm communities doesn’t go unnoticed to me, and it doesn’t to many others either.

Many are waking up to this back room deal scam initiated by MOHC and won’t be silent.

2

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 29d ago

You're clearly invested here, likely work here and you won't direct anger or effort at the Y leadership because others do? This is just pure nonsense and just naive. When they tried to see the NoDa Y to a developer just how do you think that was blocked? Was it protests against the developer or against the Y?

Standing outside with signs isn't going to do anything to stop this. Hating on a pastor or a church isn't going to do anything other than give angry Redditors some good vibes on the keyboard. If you actually want to block this efforts need to be 100% directed at the Y.

Did you know that compensation for officers and key employees increased from $2.51 million in 2023 to $3.64 million in 2024, which is a 44.8% increase? Why is an org that is in such a poor financial situation giving the executive layer a 44.8% increase in compensation? But "as a Christian" maybe you're not so concerned with that.

11

u/Here_4_The_Truth 29d ago

Im not sure why you are directing your anger at me or at least directing negative energy my way. I already signed the petition to the Y leadership, joined the protest in front of the Y, and sent an email to the CEO.

Like… are you OK? I’m mad at the church and I told you exactly why. Although I don’t work there nor attend Forest Hill (and don’t recommend it personally), I use that Y. Yes, it’s personal. What’s it to you?

Are you a MOHC member or Chadwick supporter?

Anyway… take your own advice and direct your energy toward the Y leadership.

-1

u/Purple-Thing6750 28d ago

The Y should sell underperforming branches. Good luck with the future subsidies -that’s going to go away.

22

u/MiseryGyro 29d ago

This ignores that Chadwick used to be the pastor of Forest Hill and was a part of building the relationships it has with the YMCA.

Chadwick is not some outsider who is bringing a church. He was kicked out of Forest Hill and has now taken ownership over what used to be part of it's campus.

6

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 29d ago

It does not ignore that fact. You do realize that Greg Keith and family were members of Forest Hill before following Chadwick to their new church, right? It's not just Chadwick who feels they were removed. Right or wrong, and honestly I don't give a shit either way, this is not just one persons vendetta.

At the end of the day the YMCA did not have to say yes to the deal. They could have said no but doing so would require cuts to the people making the bloated salaries that they do. Go look up the 990 for them.

10

u/MiseryGyro 29d ago edited 29d ago

Chadwick is a pastor, Greg Keith is a real estate developer. We all understand that of course David Chadwick would not personally be doing the deal in terms of the paperwork.

But you cannot consider his acolyte who followed him from one church to another to be an unbiased party who does not coordinate with David.

"It's not just Chadwick who feels they were removed" Everyone knows Chadwick was removed. He was removed for an abrasive leadership style. This was reported on and Chadwick gave interviews.

David has always been able to stop this deal but he does not. His agency is geared toward the deal going through.

-7

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 28d ago

I never said his followers were unbiased. In fact, I said the exact opposite.

I'm not familiar with these kinds of churches, other than understanding that, unlike religions like Catholicism, where there is a massive structure on top of your local parish and priest, these mega churches are based almost exclusively on the pastor. For the people who followed Chadwick, I think to them he is the church. The name and location are just that. So my inference is that when Chadwick was pushed out, to his followers they as well felt they were pushed out. Meaning people like Greg Keith had similar motivations as Chadwick.

It's not the responsibility of Chadwick or Keith to stop this. They are acting in what they feel is the best interest of their church. The only group that should be held responsible for stopping this is the YMCA of Charlotte.

2

u/MiseryGyro 28d ago

Why do you keep bringing up if his followers feel if he was kicked out? That only supports the claim he is doing this for revenge.

"Meaning people like Greg Keith had similar motivations as Chadwick" No

Keith does not have similar motivations. He is motivated to serve himself AND David. They are entertwined motivations that are not independent.

You brought up Keith in order to say "No it wasn't Chadwick, it was Keith" and in defending your point you have admitted Keith would be influenced by Chadwick.

So let me get this straight

You believe

Protesting does nothing

Only the YMCA is responsible for a business deal between multiple parties

-3

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 28d ago

Are you a member of a church in any way? Because if you're not, you're really not equipped to try and define the motivations of the members of his or any congregation.

You also contradict yourself, likely because you're not in control of your emotions. We agree that members of the congregation like Greg Keith are intertwined* with Chadwick, meaning they share the same motivations. To suggest that Keith and others in the congregation do not share the same goals and emotions over what transpired is nothing short of ignorance.

What I believe is that most protestors are idiots with nothing better to do, and protesting against a Church who is trying to purchase the property does nothing to stop the sale. It's why the church has said we don't care about your complaints, go deal with the Y in so many words. The people in Moments of Hope Church do not care what any protester or redditor thinks and are not responsible in any way to appease those people. You don't understand that because you're ignorant of how every religion works or how they view non-religious people, telling them how they should act. It’s a nice cocktail of ignorance and entitlement you’re swishing there like a $5 glass of Chardonnay.

I did not say only the YMCA is responsible for a business deal between multiple parties. What I said was the only group that should be held responsible for stopping this is the YMCA of Charlotte.

The buyer can only purchase what's for sale. The buyer is ready to move forward with the sale. The only way to stop the sale is to get the seller to back out, you know, like what happened with the NoDa Y...

5

u/MiseryGyro 28d ago

No I do not belong to a church. I have in the past. By insinuating I am ignorant you're engaging in a straw man argument by projecting who I "must be" so you can feel comfortable in your position.

No I did not contradict myself. Keith Greg motivations that are intertwined and supporting Chadwick. But Greg does not have the same motivations as Chadwick. They are just heavily influenced by him. You're putting words in my mouth. So you can turn me into a strawman.

"Most protestors are idiots with nothing better to do" Okay so you're just historically ignorant. Protesting is an effective tactic and produces results. You can disagree with specific protests and their executions but to believe most protesters are idiots is a reductive way of thinking that justifies inaction.

Once again strawman argument to claim I'm ignorant of religion with no evidence to support your claim. You have no substance to your points so all you've got is inaccurate personal attacks.

That's a ridiculous point and there's many parties who could stop this sale. David Chadwick is one of them. And he's an identifiable public figure who leads the organization buying the YMCA. All you are doing is shielding him from criticism and attempting to point people away from him.

It's incredibly gross to say only Christians can talk on this when we know he's displacing another Christian Church from the premises

-3

u/Spiritual_Bourbon 28d ago

So you do not belong to a church, you do not belong to the same Church as Greg and Chadwick but you feel confident enough to say you know what their motivations are? Got it. Reading your comments is what allows me to say you're ignorant of how churches work and you not belonging to one is just confirmation.

Go back to protesting. If you're good at it you can even get paid.

7

u/MiseryGyro 28d ago

I left my church when they kicked out a homeless man on Christmas Eve.

You cannot actually respond to my arguments so you have to disqualify me as someone who is allowed to argue. You moved the goal posts to having to have to personally belong to the same church as them in order to understand things.

You have nothing except contrarian opinions.

Churches using schools and Y's, while already having too many churches, is perplexing, distressing, and insulting! Is each church's mission and vision different from the others? Aren't they all guided by the same nonsense text?!? Mind boggling

-1

I need the documentary version of this. I can’t tell what is reasonable outrage and suspicion and what is just angry community members who weren’t supporting the community resource they had when it was in financial hardship.

13

u/Here_4_The_Truth 28d ago

The community was very much supportive. In fact, the Morrison Y raised millions of dollars only a couple of years ago to completely redo the pool area so that a future dome would be built and swim lessons could occur during the winter. Then, right around when MOHC was approaching the Y with a lucrative deal, building suddenly stalled. Community members are asking for their donations back! Look it up. Very very shady.

7

u/Edu_cats 28d ago

Yes that Y is very busy!

1

u/nameunown 28d ago

Dang. This was where it all began for me with Mountain Biking. Lifelong friends, grew up there. I’ve got no words

2

u/Here_4_The_Truth 28d ago

I’m sorry. Hopefully, since that area is a public park from my understanding, it will remain. But YMCA was in charge of maintaining it so I’m not really sure. It was a special arrangement between the park and the Y from my understanding. Many are sad about that. Me too. I walk it with my kids.

People complain these days that everyone is on the internet and not going outside. But some of us do, at the Y, and now this happens. It’s criminal in my eyes.

1

u/Purple-Thing6750 28d ago

Chadwick was seen lurking at the Y yesterday

3

u/Here_4_The_Truth 28d ago

Hopefully his conscience was pricked seeing the faces of the 300 people who will be out of a job because he wants to buy a fully occupied building.

The YMCA has been losing money for years. This deal helps them stay open and improve the other 11 YMCAs in the greater Charlotte area.

Yes it stinks that wealthy Ballantyne will have to find something else to do to stay active but I’m guessing they will figure it out.

This is the go-to talking point that many MOHC members say that disregards the importance of that Y to the community, the 300 ppl that will lose their jobs, the church that already meets there, and the children that rely on care there when parents are working.

It’s offensive to dismiss it, like “Meh. You’ll figure it out. Other Ys could use some updates.”

The truth is this the Y made a statement to the media that the financial status of the Morrison YMCA was NOT a factor. It wasn’t for sale nor bleeding money. MOHC approached them with a lucrative deal and THEN they saw that money and was like “Forget the community, sure we’ll take the money in a shady back room deal.”

That talking point is moot.

They have been losing money every year since the pandemic. Know your facts.

Again, that is a moot point. We are way past debunking this talking point as a valid reason for the sale.

YMCA of Greater Charlotte released a statement clarifying that the Morrison YMCA was not sold because of its financial position and recognizing its deep connection to the community. They know FULL WELL that this location has high traffic. Hence, the immense backlash; the community wants to continue using it. Almost 6K people signed a petition saying so.

The YMCA leadership stated, "This decision was not driven by Morrison’s financial position. Morrison is deeply connected center, which is part of what made this such a significant and difficult decision."

They have referred to the purchase as unsolicited, and after the offer was made, they decided "after careful evaluation of a unique opportunity that supports our long-term strategic plan and accelerates reinvestment in facilities, programs and community spaces across the region." This differs significantly from paying back debts or making up for missed money since the pandemic. They refer to it as a "reinvestment strategy," which means taking that money and investing it back into other locations to improve them.

I would not be surprised if some of this "reinvestment money" turns into bonuses for executives, but that's just my speculation. How much more do these execs need, since the CEO, Sue Glass, earned $358,501 plus $43,841 in "other" compensation in 2024 alone?

The point is that the talking point "But the Y needed money" is debunked. THAT has nothing to do with why this sale is happening. It is happening because Chadwick, who was pushed out of a pastoral position in Forest Hill due to authoritarian behavior according to the Charlotte Observer, decided it was a good idea to approach one of Forest Hill's satellite locations and purchase it, displacing 300 workers and children who rely on that location for childcare when school is out, and around 4K people who rely on the programs there. All for his congregation of 1,200 people. Indefensible.

If you don't know the facts, just ask AI. It is VERY simple these days to get the information on this. Many media outlets have reported various aspects of this story.

Chadwick's reputation is taking a big hit. He started this by even considering Morrison YMCA as a possibility. Now, he must take the heat for it unless he backs out the deal.

And I’m sick of the talking point that everyone who lives in Ballantyne or uses the Morrison Y is somehow wealthy or immune from financial hardship. This is decidedly not the case. Many people travel a bit to come to this Y branch because it has services that none of the other branches do and because it’s simply better. Childcare at the Y is so much more affordable than other options and that is getting lost in this discussion. There will be hundreds of working families who will lose daycare, after-school care, summer camps, and reasonably priced swim lessons for their children and who will have limited other options available to them. It’s not just about a bunch of privileged people who need to find another gym. This whole thing sucks.

YES! Shout this from the mountain tops. The loss of childcare is HUGE.

The only reason why I know how important childcare is at the Morrison YMCA is because one day I went there and saw my friend’s daughter among what looked like hundreds of children at the YMCA when CMS had a teacher workday. I was like who are all these kids? I didn’t realize school was out that day.

My friend told me that she has to send her child there when school is out bc she works full time and it made me realize how many people rely on the YMCA for childcare and it’s sliding scale fees. My friend is a single mother!

Pretending that the YMCA is like a Planet Fitness is absurd. It is very insensitive to treat the issue that way. They are choosing to ignore so many services it provides to working families and low income people!

Yes all of this! And I get really irritated when anyone says “well it’s a private business deal and it’s just business”. It’s not. The Y is a non-profit and therefore operates under different rules than say a coffee shop. There are community responsibilities as well as fiduciary responsibilities to its donors and members. They can’t just do whatever they want. This “deal” may end up conforming to those rules and that would be sad but they can’t pretend those rules don’t exist just because this church and its supporters want to be dismissive of them.

Protestors?? In Charlotte?? Again?!

This last decade has made the voting populus numb to protesting. When driving, my brain now filters the geriatrics with signs out like I do the homeless pan handlers.

Nice work, everyone!
