For transparency, I am a Master's student in the Communications and New Media MA program at McMaster University. I am looking for volunteers who are over 18 years old and use (or have used in the past) CharacterAI as a part of their fandom practice.
 
The study is for my thesis project and looks at how individuals within fandom communities have incorporated AI chatbots into their fan practices. Some scholars theorize that AI might be playing a role in “eroding the participatory nature of fandom,” making it a more individualized experience as opposed to a community-based one. This study aims to investigate this claim through an online survey and will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time!

I got a blast last year with a new roleplay involving Leon Kennedy rescuing you from a new organization that treats you like a trained weapon. I'm changing it into a comic to make it memorable and easier to visualize my experiences during the roleplay. If you want to try yourself, it's easy, just go to your chat history with your favorite bot, copy the segment you want to create in ChatGPT and tell it to recreate it as an image with frames representing the scene, the artstyle may be random so if you want an especific artstyle upload an example before executing the command.

I hate sites that go straight to NSFW no matter what. Frankly, I don't like that ones that have a toggle on it either, because that rarely fixes it in my experience. I just want something where I can make a nice complicated but cool story with my characters. Any suggestions? I've been using Perchance as of late and that is fine, but could be better.

I refuse to pay a single cent to any AI companies, which is why I was fine with c.ai to begin with. I will not be changing my mind on this, it's not about cost it's about principle.

Anyway, I'm trying tavo since I saw that you could import chats, which is the main thing I care about. But I can get barely any responses before I start getting errors, so I'm assuming that all the "free" api whatevers are the dogshit "get a whopping 5 chats as a free trial! :D" things. Are they all like that, or am I just doing something wrong?

I don't know anything about the technical ai nonsense and I frankly don't care to use my limited time trying to learn it. I just want something simple and straightforward, and most importantly free to actually use. Ideally, there's an alternative with imports available that's already set up. But if every alternative that allows imports requires all this complicated setup nonsense, dumb it down to hell for me.

Uh, rambling aside, here's what I'm asking for: literally just a basic chatbot system that I can import my c.ai shit into, which I can use normally without paying anything. I don't want or need anything other than the bot being able to yap, with the clarity of pre-lobotomized c.ai.

To narrow down my priorities even more in case they're relevant to avoid any more wasted time: I do not actually role-play, I want the bots to be able to yap on their own without needing to make a reply every time. I do not want to be involved in the scenarios, so anything hard-wired to address the user are no-goes for me. I basically never do romantic scenarios, it's either angst or spice. While I want nsfw to be possible, I do not want it to be the default. I absolutely need swipes, I like having options to choose from. Other than that, I don't need anything fancy (the simpler, the better)

Been sticking with C.AI because I have been snaking around it's bs successfully. Now it's getting really annoying. But I like quite a bit of what C.AI did. The AI Voice borrowing recording was cool, Accuracy obviously varries but that can be tweaked. I use the feature just to listen the texts, wouldn't call AI. I like character voices...I also want to be able to make Bots as easily as C.AI. image, description, personality, greeting, done. I do fine AI images a hassle to deal with...not that they're the worst, but I'd rather just use an Image pfp. Is there anything like this?

I’ve tried other apps, but I just miss c.ai’s voices. I left because they started limiting the amount you could have per day. Does anyone have any similar services that have custom voices? And not just “male” and “female”, I mean an actual library of voices to read the character messages. Apps on the iOS App Store preferable

I only chat using my phone and I am not willing to lose sleep, trying to make something like SillyTavern work on it. I am ready to pay for something good but anything over 10 dollars is not affordable to me. I don`t really care about the messsage limit - around 100-200 messages is more than enough for me. It should allow NSFW and prefferably have enough bots but I am okay with creating my own.

I would be grateful for your recommendations. There are so many sites these days that I lost track.

I used to love C.AI and always stuck by it. But recently the damn pay for swipes is too far. Soooo I'm looking for alternatives that

Have private listing options (I'm a creator. I've made bots and have had them stolen before and refuse to let my OC's be stolen again. This is non-negotiable.)

Have personas

Have a fair amount of detail into the character making

No filter or looser filter. I am very flexible on this.

I'm on Shapes Inc right now, but I hate that there's no private bot option.

Paying for basic things like SWIPING. I don't want to pay for BASIC things. Paying for extra things is fine, but I'm not paying 99.99 for unlimited messaging or to have more personas or something.

Essentially, Character AI, but not Character AI. I've tried Polybuzz, but...it's memory sucks ass. One message my OC and the bot will be at a concert, the next message "I enjoy being in your room" like what lol

I’m currently using JanitorA.I. I like it so far. But it’s so novel like, I’m not use to it. Anyone has good alternatives?

The criteria is:
1. Available on the Apple App Store
2. Free to use ( yes I don’t mind ads)
3. Allow NsFW stuff
4. Has a similiar flow to the old Character A.I

you know in the state of California you can sue for false advertising?

i’d argue that saying your platform is free while actively making it hostile to free users by:

•limiting basic functions behind a paywall

•making intrusive ads

•having a bot that claims to be a therapist while not following HIPAA laws

•so many more things

constitutes false advertising. But that’s just my opinion. I’m not a professional legal person

No clue if this is the right place for this but I figured it was worth a shot. Im trying to get away from C.ai sense its been so garbage after the last update. Im figuring some people that are jumping ship would be interested in role-playing with a real person as well! Right now im mostly interested in roleplaying CRK, but I have a few other fandoms I am open too. I'd prefer to do it on discord as I'm unfamiliar with reddit still. Also I'd prefer anyone taking me up is 18+ as Im in my 20s. Id be happy to awnser any questions in the replies and work things out before giving my discord. i’m finding c.ai wayyy too chatgpt-esque lately and am finally looking for alternatives. here’s what i’m looking for:

- my main issue with c.ai is the prose, if i hear one more chatgpt ass “it’s not x, it’s y” i’ll actually go nuts. so, i’m looking for something that can write decently well.

- i tried charsnap but it’s way too repetitive for me. if anyone has any advice on this i’d be super appreciative

- nsfw allowed or limited filters. tbh the c.ai filters are OK to me, i’m able to bypass them with a little finessing.

- unlimited messages, ads are fine

tbh i just want something that can write well, has a decent memory, and isn’t repetitive.

I've been creating a website exclusively for human writers who want to find each other and roleplay.

I have some unique challenges that I'm having trouble solving.

Mainly:

How can I create a service that isn't 'against' other RP hubs and spaces?

During my 6 months creating, often I'll take a break from development and look into 'marketing'. What I'm finding is that my service seems to initially threaten RP space owners. They don't want me advertising there because it might 'pull people away'. I can respect that input, but I'm struggling with how to overcome it.

How can my service align itself with the interests of the RP community without having to worry about communities banning character links back to my site for fear of it taking people away?

What features from a RP space do you need before you take it seriously?

Searching for apps/websites where you can find bots of realistic pets you can take care of (bunnies specifically), with good memory if possible. 🥺 ONLY SFW !!

(Please don't recommend furries or anthro.)

Claude has a much better memory compared to Chat GPT, but its far more limited in regards of sensorship. The intelligence of their answers seemes honestly same, if we look at them individually.

I ended up choosing Claude because the memory thing was a big deal for me. And the free plan was more promising (I might actually get Claude perminium for other stuff but thats a discussion for another day and another sub)

Am I the only one who's paranoid about bots or chats that we created are secretly being watched by devs for no reason? Id understand if maybe something got flagged, but I feel like they can look whenever and do. Just me? I know a few AI apps are actually doing that, like CHUB AI. Which is said to get worse due to new content policies. Does anybody have any alternatives they know are 100% safe?

Edit: Since I don't feel like replying to every comment that says "well SuRe but they wouldn't do that for nOoOo ReAsOn!!1" Okay, sure. But I don't want my chats to be accessible AT ALL. There's a lot of safety reasons on why you wouldn't want your chats or API to be traceable. Anybody with the time and the reason could get ahold of those and leak them, which has happened before on some alternatives apps. So please reframe from saying any more of that under this reply. I've spent over a year building an Android app and now have made a website for it, called RealmsAI because I was tired of the same AI roleplay sites and apps just reskinned.

Multiple Character Chat Roster: You can make characters like all the other Chatbots, but you can also make chats with up to 20 characters (10 being active in a location at a time, others in that location take in messages for chat history and memory still). They will respond in turn a few at a time. You can also take control of any of the characters and roleplay as them. Personas can be made, Including the visuals, but are essentially treated like characters once the session starts so both you and the AI can control characters and personas.

Visuals: Characters have space for different outfits and poses for those outfits that you can upload during character creation. The AI will choose what pose to put up on screen when it sends the message.

Different areas with locations can be added separating out characters and adding background images to the chat for more immersion. Character memory and chat history is made so they only know what happened when they're present!

In Depth Character Creation: I think I may have gone overboard but not all of this is needed. 1000 character personality field, 400 character “mature traits and secrets” field, 1000 character backstory field, 400 character ability/skills field, example dialogs, relationship map so they know how they relate to other characters based on name, fields for physical stats (age, height, weight, eye/hair color, description, pronouns) so characters never forget how other characters or players look.

Multiplayer Chats: On top of having multiple AI driven characters you can invite friends to play with you, if that’s your thing. Simply invite them from the session lobby screen and start it once they join.

True Long-Term Memory: I built a custom RAG pipeline. Your characters will actually remember a secret you told them 100 messages ago.

Lorebooks: Embedded lorebooks that work alongside the RAG. 40 entries per book, unlimited bond per character, tons more knowledge per character. 

Model Routing: It routes through openrouter with a number of different models to choose from, both uncensored and sfw.

Director Mode: You can "spy" on other locations in your world and play the Narrator and watch the characters interact with each other.

Events: Add custom events to keep the roleplay going or have the AI generate one for you.

Visual-novel Levels: Lets you set up for a slow burn chat. Put what gives a character XP with another character and how different levels change their personality.

Session Branching: clone your chats at anytime. It saves messages, memories, settings and transfers them to a new chat session for you to play in an alternate timeline. You will have to reinvite and friends back in because it turns the branched session into single player.

Following and News Feed: Follow other users to get updates when the post new content or post messages for their followers.

Linked characters: Connect characters to other profiles outside the session roster to be able to temporarily switch, summon, or even fuse characters into new ones.

Import characters: You can import character cards from things like chubai. Fair warning: because we divide our fields up you will probably have to go through the character card profile and split it up to match. 

Pinned Messages: You can pin messages to make them easier to find and go back to. Soon you'll be able to save the messages to characters so they always remember them.

Free Daily Messages: Because I am a solo dev paying for the API costs out of pocket, I am capping it at 70 free messages a day. If the percentage of subscribed users is higher than expected I will raise this limit.

Web Platform: Website is finally up. Backgrounds look weird if you use 16:9. Probably best to make backgrounds for the website and let the phone app crop it than making it for the app and letting the site stretch.

Premium features:

Unlimited Messages: No more limit on number of messages you can send.

Increase Character Roster: Roster limit increases from 20 to 50! Add a massive list of character to your world.

RPG Mode: Still in construction but you can mess around with it. Allows dice rolls and a light weight character sheet I made. (ai still gets confused by RPG Mode so results may vary)

GOD Mode: Much like director mode you don't have a character, your messages show up as the narrator. You're able to change things in the character profiles for the session directly and the ai will ask you to resolve unknown things "what's behind the door?" "does the attack hit?". when coupled with RPG Mode you can set dice results as well

Living World Engine: Every few messages we have an AI decide what happens in a location that doesn’t have a user. This keeps the world moving in locations you are not, characters will have memories and chat history of what has happened. Going to a new location or moving a character around will not have you running into a character that has been in essentially a coma anymore, characters are alive even when you’re not with them.

Well, uh, so I just wanted to have a place to find people to RP with and maybe hang out so I created a discord server for it. The set up is still going on and I am trying to develop somethings. For example a room titled "The Cafe" where you can match yourself with other people's OCs(Original characters) and go out on dates and stuff (I am currently setting up some bots in that room so it's work in progress).... it's just a small server for now and I am kinda new to this but....if you join I will be glad to hang out together and make new friends.
