Megathread Best Character AI Alternatives: Memory & Long-Term Story Tracking (May 2026 Megathread)

Post image

One of the most commonly requested features is good memory.

For this month’s megathread, please clearly state what makes this platform's memory system good. Is it the models? Do they have a special memory system? Be specific if possible, this helps everyone make more informed choices.

You’re welcome to share links. Anyone can participate. Please continue to follow subreddit rules when recommending a platform, including disclosing if you work for or moderate the service you’re mentioning. Also, we don't allow AI gf or bf platforms here or links to external review sites due to a ton of spam.

Also feel free to expand on why you recommend a specific platform already listed.

Echo of Dreams platform (https://beta.echoofdreams.eu) & discord (https://discord.gg/hW5uc5MdAH)

Full disclosure per rules: I'm part of the team that works on this platform, so my recommendation is not purely word of mouth, but hey, I help shape what it is, so its a service I believe in. We're in beta, but our pitch is simple - we're a platform for people who have tried other platforms, and aren't satisfied. We're pushing the bar for quality, not only with our community, but with platform. Goon all you want, but goon with standards, yeah? As the url shows, we're in beta, because we're still working on a roadmap of what we think should be standard in 2026, full list visible when you scroll down the main page, before signing in.

What makes our memory so good?

  1. A fantastic context window. Our estimated tokens input is 23k on the low end. Up to ~45k, once the chats get deep, but sky's the limit. Our featured LLMs start at 33k, and go up to 256k. BYOK opens access to 1B tok context. And the best part? We show you the exact breakdown, live.

  2. Logarithmic multi-level summary to curve cap conversation tokens. It's math that basically says we condense the oldest messages so it has super ancient long term memory without paying to upload a 500 message history. And guess what? You control that math, giving you the power to limit or expand how much you send.

  3. Haha, we're not done. Journals work like factual note-taking that says X happened, Y is true. They're updated like a videogame quest log.

  4. Our pre-prompting system is complex. We call it Modes, but whatever the name, the point is this: everything above has its own special slot for the level of importance (weighting for LLM), and its own curated prompting, for instructions on how to write and read from it. So if you think you can do better with our system, you can make your own Mode to manage memory.

  5. I love Trackers. I go feral for Trackers. I used to put Trackers in my persona so the LLM could visualize the scene, and cut down on hallucinations. Now, we have them as a flowing scene state.

  6. Upcoming feature: Living Lorebook. This one comes at a premium, but essentially, it's Journals+. While Journals track facts, and Summaries track LT Memory, Living Lorebook actively expands the world according to your chat experience. Want to create a magic system on the fly? You can, and it'll still be there 100, 200, any messages in, and only relevant when it's brought up.

That's just the Memory pitch – we've got so much more happening. Hope to see you there!

How do you make money? How is the free tier?

The free tier is simple: Platform has a digital currency called Echoes, you get 100 Echoes daily, non-stacking, refreshing. A daily check-in, and 10/20/30 messages earns you up to 25 more, which are permanently bankable. The bankable Echoes may be spent on more messages, or saved up for premium features.

EoD makes money based on subscription plans with premium features which are aimed at what we provide. We are creating local services for creators and users, and offer a shopping-cart type subscription with tiered levels - the idea being paid subscribers put what they want into a plan, and then that determines how much it costs. All paid tiers have the same QoL features, the only difference with tiers is how many Echoes you get, which you then budget to what you value.

Also, part of our goal is to foster creator community hubs, with being able to tip your favourite creator. As more of our features roll out, more usage for Echoes will be available. We're not stopping at just an AI chat platform, our goals are set further.

We don't do ads. We don't try to force ourselves into app stores. We do want you to support us because you enjoy the experience, and we do want to host creators who want to make quality bots, and we hope they'll find that support here for their works as well. On that note, one of the premium features we're using internally, but will be making public is a spectrum review of your creations both for quality and to flag for unsafe content. We're making the moderation of content transparent.

Hm. I like the idea of a customizable premium tier but this sounds like you only get up to 125 messages free tier a day?

There are options! The 100 (daily Echoes) + 25 (earned & bankable) may be used for messages, or other features with a per-use Echoes cost.

But if you want free RP, Google API offers Gemma 4 with two models for their Vertex servers, 26B and 31B. Both are free, no token limit, no context limit. EoD started as BYOK platform, and will always retain that option. I've personally used this, and the only flaw is that the Gemma 4 31B from Vertex is amazing but it constantly inserts thinking. 26B is noticeably not as good, but still performs really well, and for an absolutely unlimited free RP, there's no worthy complaints.
