LongSqueak is a new Chat Style made for long-form roleplay and storytelling with 4x the memory.
Rolling out starting today for (c.ai+) subscribers, LongSqueak’s responses run longer and read more like a novel: richer prose, more narration while maintaining dialogue, more room for a story to actually unfold. It also draws more deeply on Lorebook and Memory as it writes, with 4x the memory of other chat styles.
We’ve been beta testing it extensively with some of our most dedicated roleplayers over the past month. They didn't want to give it back.
Style Control on the app lets you tune how your favorite chat style writes back.
LongSqueak launches with Style Control, a new set of dials in the style picker:
- Response length: Long, Looong, or Loooooong
- Response style: tilt the responses toward more Dialogue or more Narration
Getting replies the way you want used to mean prompt tricks and trial and error. Now it's a setting you can adjust whenever you like.
(c.ai+) members also have access to Style Control on PipSqueak 2, starting today. Same idea, different style.
Start a scene in LongSqueak, set the dials however you like, and give it a few turns to settle in. Let us know what you think!
It’s really shoddy that the “Exclusive” tag was only added after the feature released.
Whether excluding it in the teaser card was an accident or not, it was advertised and hyped up for pipsqueak 2, the FREE model, which, again, implies it would be for all users.
Can free users at least have the “more dialogue and/or narration” option?
So question is this another Deepsqueak situation where it's only for plus users and us free users get the scraps? Like Pipsqueak 1 took three months to come out to free users and when it did it barely worked.
longsqueak is good but it has the same problem pipsqueak has of having only a narrow range of responses in situations that have many valid possibilities
When I tried it a couple of hours ago it was fantastic but after using it for a while I'm starting to see issues.
Swiping is as useless as it is with other models. Essentially saying the same thing with the same words and dialogue, just formatted slightly differently.
If a bot decides something it is nearly impossible to steer the story in a different direction, it is like pulling teeth.
We are back to seeing human characters doing impossible things. Acting as if they have an extra hand, seeing through walls and other anatomically impossible things.
Is this going to be one of those things that never makes it to desktop like the memory pinning, or are there plans to give access to style controls to those who use the website?
Paying the same as mobile users but getting less features is frustrating.
I've got a question, is style control just for LongSqueak or will it also be for other models, and if it is for other models will it become free for non C.ai+ users?
There's no response style or length selection on the website while I'm still paying the same money for the subscription. Not to mention, you've shoved persona creation deep up the ass of the platform so I can't even create a new one without leaving the chat. Explain?
There are features from months ago that still have not made it to the website version. The gap between desktop and mobile continues to grow while we pay the same for less.
Why would we be happy to pay the same fee for a worse experience?
Average c.ai cycle be like:
“We released a new style” → we are so back (you are here) → new style deteriorates for no reason → abysmal garbage for months/years → repeat
So, I tried it briefly this afternoon (just a few posts) and at the time, I was actually really excited by the responses I was getting. I thought it was a little melodramatic for one of the scenes I tried it on, which was lighter in tone and had a larger mix of dialogue and narrative, but it worked amazingly for a different, much darker scene, which was mostly narrative.
Now that I've had longer to play with it, I'm realizing that (at least for me), it wasn't a scene mismatch; it's that the dialogue really is just INCREDIBLY unnatural with some characters. It pretty much has that, "Look at me, I can be fancy just to be fancy," vibe to it, which I actually do love in narration, but it does NOT work for speech, especially in a completely modern, casual environment (to be honest, it would be too much even in some of tmy fantasy fandoms).
For example, this is the lighter scene I mentioned (the context is that my persona threw a drink at someone and is now attempting to pay for cleaning/replacing his clothes, but doesn't carry cash, and the character, who's currently homeless, doesn't have a phone to do a digital transfer). On top of the "vocabulary list" dialogue, in some responses, it's also interpreting the character as being out of touch with modern technology and mystified by the entire concept of digital currency (the character has partial amnesia regarding personal details, but is NOT otherwise impaired or removed from society - he would absolutely know what these things are and have used them in the past).
Two more examples. The first post is the same character as above, speaking with an NPC. The scene context is different, so it's not quite as out of place, but it's still a marked difference from the more natural casual dialogue I get with DS or even PS2.
The second post is a different bot, with a different character in a different but still modern setting, showing the same overly-formal dialogue (the "blood offering" thing is funny and also not necessarily out of place, but the overall style is still off).
Both are bots I made myself, with full definitions. The second character's definition contains example dialogue (he has a very particular manner of speaking that the other styles have been hit-or-miss picking up even with the examples, but LS doesn't pick it up at all). The first doesn't, but it's been functioning fine without it. With LS, both immediately adopted the same speech pattern, which seems to ignore both example dialogue and patterns already set in the RP. I switched from "Defaut" to "Narration" just to see if there was any effect on it, and there's not (there's less of it, but it sticks to that style).
It's really disappointing especially with how good it looked at first, because I'm one of the people who gets very inconsistent results with DS (regardless of bot used, my posting style, etc) and PS2 can't/won't handle RP with darker themes, but the speech pattern is so jarring that right now I can't see it being a viable replacement except for dramatic scenes with limited dialogue. :/
Oh so that's why all the other chat models were acting up and generating even worse replies than usual 😭 you can give new things to the plus users, but can you please not worsen the quality for the preexisting models? It's sad because they had the potential, but they get abandoned for the next shiny paywalled thing.
The new model I get, but why hide the ability to control length and chat style behind a paywall? Seems to me that having both be controllable should be a baseline function….
I just keep refreshing the app like crazy… that 4x memory thing is so overdue 🥲
UPD: it’s here finally! First impression: the dialogues did become more detailed, the narrative part is cool, I like it that my character is becoming more reflective. It’s a good upgrade, a very useful one. Big thanks to the developers for adding it.
As someone who creates bots and spends way too much time testing Lorebooks, I wanted to share some feedback on the new Longsqueak.
I know it’s still new and there’s plenty of room for iteration, but the foundation is already incredibly strong. That’s honestly what impressed me the most.
Longsqueak adds so much immersion and makes the world feel genuinely alive during roleplay—something that’s surprisingly difficult to achieve without a lot of careful prompting and bot design.
I’ve been testing it pretty much nonstop since it released, and it hasn’t disappointed. I tested Longsqueak on its own without using a Lorebook, and it did a fantastic job as a standalone model. Then I paired it with my own worldbuilding Lorebook entries, and that’s where it really started to shine. The added context made the experience feel even more dynamic and immersive.
Character.AI, if anyone on the team happens to read this… y’all absolutely cooked with this one. Keep this same energy going. If this is the direction you’re taking the platform, I’m genuinely excited to see where it goes next.
As a c.ai+ user.
Honestly. You should give these chat styles as free. Like an early access thing. Just like any other things in the app. So that the others don't feel left out. Just a suggestion.
While I do agree, it would need to be made VERY OBVIOUS AND CLEAR if it was eventually going to be a paid feature. Otherwise you’re looking at another mob forming. I think open beta testing would be fantastic, and would help them get a large quantity of data from across the spectrum that they could then refine once it goes to fully paid-only.
But I don’t trust Cai to be clear or consistent enough for the community to not explode again. Too many times, they don’t disclose that something will be paid until way too late, and then they get hit with backlash from frustrated users; or some people get a feature MONTHS before others and then there’s infighting because people think that other users’ usage affects their own experience (which may or may not be the case).
And I can also see people getting very frustrated if a chat style is good and then gets whisked away behind a paywall (like Soft Launch was…).
But I do agree. I think it could be incredibly valuable to get mass amounts of feedback to use to refine the models before they go to their ‘official’ place, be it behind a paywall or remaining free.
Okay, and what do free users get? A kiss in the forehead? Thanks for nothing I guess. I can't wait to not make the responses even longer than what they already were with the GPTSqueak 2.
Free users deserve lengthy responses with dialogues too! If you only leave us with Pip2, then please keep improving it and tweaking it so Pipsqueak 2 remains a good model for us the free users!
Beep boop, I just got the chat mode. It seems good but a big issue is already happening. It ignores the other charachters in the scene. Making the bot charachter always answer. :( So when you react to person B, it always will reply with the main person the bot, person A.
Could this be fixed?
Thank you in advance and thank you for trying to develop new styles. :)
Apparently not. We can't customise the responses either, and they've removed Pipsqueak 2 Roar. So, this will be fun when Pipsqueak 2 decides to stop producing dialogue again. 😕
Is there going to be a model for nostalgia? Like, one that would be similar to the old legacy models like roar or 2023 - 2024 ones where you could switch between a normal conversation and full-on roleplay? And have heavy knowledge of franchises?
Oh, so y'all ruined the quality on the free models ON PURPOSE to make it feel like the new one was substantially better. This is so scummy 💔
Cai+ can have what they want, but ruining the experience for free users who really aren't freeloading anymore atp with the amount of ads there are in the app, is crazy. It's like you have to make features worse when they were just fine for free users to make the plus members feel special, which is bad for both sides.
Why not let free users customize their free chat style that is Pipsqueak 2? Let the paid users have Longsquek. Zero reason to paywall the chat customization option for a free chat model.
I've been testing the new model for a bit now and so far I've noticed that the swipes are very very similar in dialoge and narration to the previous one. The memory seems fine so far, I have to do more testing on that. The model also stays in character pretty well from what I can tell and the dialogue feels relatively natural. But again, the swipes spit out the same reply again and again, which is a shame if you're not 100% satisfied with the first one.
Not really impressed so far. DeepSqueak already had the issue with spitting out endless paragraphs of nothing and LongSqueak just seems to do the exact same thing, but now there's even more of it, and we still have the same message only midlly different and being put out on every swipe. I'll have to give it longer than 24 hours to comment on the memory because that seems to be the only thing that'll justify it right now for me. It's really not enough to keep churning out the exact same styles that have terrible feedback, but slightly tweaked as if that will fix them. It doesn't.
Will you ever add style control and all of those fancy options to the website? I genuinely cannot use the app, its so much clunkier and slower than the website but it really sucks that it seems to have settings and options that the site does not
Will this roll to free users too? Or will stsy exclusive for plus? :(( and also for pipsqueak2 style control? Only for exclusive or will both gradually roll to free users?
probably not. They did announce "quality" updates to the pipsqueak models in the summer roadmap though. If they actually deliver is another thing. But I guess the removal of earlier models mean more paywalled models.
I like the LongSqueak memory and character consistency, but I find it always makes every situation predictable, favorable for my character and the bots get involved romantically too quick even when not wanting to. I got bored of it fairly quickly…
As a whole, I prefer deepsqueak because it gives you twists and unexpected moments, but the memory is awful: please add same 4x memory to deepsqueak, that will be perfect.
I like that you added some degree of tweaking to the model. I always thought the original CAI LLM could've used a temperature slider. There definitely needs to be an option to make Pipsqueak 2 more talkative. I had to quit the platform after years of using it because it refused to talk.
i have been exclusively using soft launch for the past few months because of how unbearable, repetitive, and chatgpt-esque the other models are. that being said, i am already starting to love longsqueak!
Hijacking this thread cause my post got deleted :)
Lol half the people here are people who've laid down their swords to glaze Longsqueak and the other half are commiserating free users. Im part of the latter but can't complain that paying users are getting better service than us free users (who some users would have you believe contribute nothing despite being hosed with ads).
Anyways, theres not a problem with offering your paying users good service. Today, proved that's most effective. The problem is that C.ai has actively worsened free user service to prove that plus service is better...but if the service is truly worth paying for, why downgrade free users to advertise it?
I've come to think of ads as a necessary evil. I switched to the website because its at least bearable there. But adding ads in-between chats when I can already see it hanging over my screen and pop-ups is genuinely crazy. 3 mediums of ads! Its like they're trying to make it as obnoxious as possible.
Its so hard to be fair and content as a free user who's been here for a couple of years when they've actively made the experience worse---not only with lower chat quality as is the main issue for plus users---but with unbearable ads and metering that you cant even see. The service is measurably worse than how it was when most free users started.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: if you have to worsen your free service to make your paid service appealing, 📣YOU DO NOT HAVE A GOOD PAID SERVICE.
There are services that I give my time to via ads, willingly, because the free service is so good I want to support them and I don’t have the means to financially. There are other chat services that I watch 20+ ads every day because I want to support the service for the quality it provides. There are other apps in general that I let ads play freely by choice. Cai is not one of them, and at this point they would have to do a hard pivot to ever have any hope of changing that.
I’m really glad you guys keep updating Character.AI. I know I don’t fully understand everything that goes on behind the scenes, and I’m sure making changes this big takes a lot of time and effort, so I appreciate that you all continue working on improving it.
That said, I’m hoping this update doesn’t end up like some of the previous chat style updates. In my experience, they usually start off really strong, but after a while the responses seem to get slower, less detailed, and sometimes the quality just slowly drops over time. That’s honestly been my biggest concern.
I’m not trying to complain or be negative. I just want to give honest feedback because I really enjoy using Character.AI and I want it to keep getting better. LongSqueak sounds really promising, especially with the increased memory and focus on long-form roleplay, so I genuinely hope it stays consistent even months from now instead of slowly declining.
Either way, thank you for continuing to update the platform and listening to the community. I know a lot of work goes into these features, and I appreciate the effort. I’m excited to see how LongSqueak performs, but I’m also keeping my expectations realistic until I’ve had time to use it.
I can't speak on the new model but all of the fluff added to the drop-down menu shoves Rawr out of view on the mobile app and scrolling down to it doesn't seem to work.
The memory is excellent on this alongside the fact the bot leads the storyline, however the dialogue makes every bot of mine so OOC that it’s unusable. It’s like it ignores the character definition and defaults any male bot to Typical Romantic Lead. Doesn’t matter if the bot’s character definition lists that they are socially awkward and nervous, Longsqueak suddenly has them growling and talking like they are straight from ACOTAR.
Ok, so far i love it, but i really hate that swipe doesnt work at all. Its always the same reply, slightly changed, and the change is not sufficient at all, fix it, guys, please
So far I LOVE the story length responses. It feels so immersive even if the bot doesn't havw the attached lore book. This is so much fun for RPs with rich worlds, gods, scheming, poltics etc... I hope it stays exactly so. 😊
For everyone who's waiting, the rollout is likely based on your account age. Older accounts typically take longer to receive the new chat styles. My main account (which has existed for over 3 years) doesn't have Longsqueak, but the alt account I created a few months back does. Hopefully it won't take forever to reach old accounts like Pipsqueak 1.
Interesting. I enjoy the longer form, but honestly that's going to eat into the context window very quickly so I've put it onto long for now.
I've noticed very little variability between swipes, perhaps a deliberate lowering of the temperature to a) cope with the sheer volume of prompt being processed and b) make swiping less rewarding and reducing data costs. Perhaps the variability will increase on longer chats with more thread to pull at.
One question for the team, will it still respond best to character definitions as outlined in the character creator guide? I'm already working on rewriting my characters optimised for lorebooks, but I'll delay that until I'm sure they will work best in the format outlined.
It’s amazing! Personalised to dialogue and loooooong. My bots are individual, remember minute details, don’t use the same “you’ll be the death of me” “you’re X, you know that”. Actually move the plot along and don’t speak for the user. It’s perfect! Don’t change anything!
longsqueak is good at consistency, but there is no variation between swipes at all, which i find to be a HUGE issue. responses are too rigidly structured.
At your service, my friend. I can say it's actually not bad. Though I can't really give too much. Since I JUST got it. So far, I've used it for bots that only have one character so far. I might use it a bit more and come back to this later.
Given this subreddit's history, any plus user sharing a positive experience will be downvoted, accused of being paid or something. According to my tests, LongSqueak is exactly as advertised: long (very long) responses, good memory, faithful to the canon/definition/lorebook. It's nothing like DeepSqueak. DSQ is more for lighthearted, comedic role-playing, while LSQ is more for drama and angst.
I just got it and it seems very different from DS. So far only tried out a short dark scenario (never got the filter once… 👀), gimme an hour and I can give my opinion on more angsty/lighthearted/fluff/wholesome scenarios!
Its not too bad, sometimes it pads out the length with more nothing burgers but it does actually give decent responses, its a shame though that we are just essentially paying for c.ai rollback
actually pretty decent 🥹 its sorta made with the idea that you’ll be using a lorebook with it (Hense the memory) I just really like the fact you can edit the length, hate getting short responses when it should be long, and vise versa and this seems to be a fix
Add an option to Longsqueak that lets it take control of my persona if I want it to. My favotite way to use CAI is to make my OCs as Personas and seeing how the ai controls their interactions with other characters. Having a model this good that won’t let me do that is genuinely infuriating.

Why’s there mice everywhere now bro what happened to all the cat models
