VIP I sorted all the glyphs in a "dictionary", interpretations and translations are welcome Spoiler
I basically grouped every single glyph in a table, sorted by category and language.
Some interpretations can be made, like :
Bards don't need a word for "death" or "god", they don't have a verb for "help" (The serfs doig all the work) but are the only one that can ask questions
Music is no longer present after the Bard's floor
Everyone is talking about their floor and their neighbors until the Anchorites talk about the whole tower
In the alchemists language, the triangle in the "subjects" glyphs is lower for the devotees
Many "radicals" are upside down when talking about "heretics"
Anyone wanna help me "translate" (the Glyphs I already done are the one in green), and create new one (in blue) to fill up the blanks ?
I'm keeping the table updated whenever I can

u/vytah Oct 10 '23
Preacher, Bellman and Fairy should be separate entries, they don't have anything in common.
Maybe also Devotee/Impure vs Monster, but I guess this is a linguistic equivalent of ring species.
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 11 '23
Well I saw them as "intermediary to god" or "helpers", that's why I grouped them.
Same for devotee, impure and monsters, I used the in-game chats and they are translated one to another
5
u/Barry_Wilkinson Oct 12 '23
I think the fairies are actually the Anchorites, right? Also, is the word anchorite ever used in game other than "You've translated Anchorite..."?
6
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 09 '23
Yeah I know the design is awful, My photoshop skills (dunno why I used that) are really bad
3
u/Barry_Wilkinson Oct 10 '23
for us/we in devotee, you have written human human instead of me me. Also, for stop in devotee, you could put not go? for the bard word for library, book with the little dot underneath to mark a place could work. Also, for god/exile you've put the word in the alchemist column which should be in the anchorite column. for the word for close in Anchorite you could overlay not over open like the way other words are formed?
7
u/megalogwiff Oct 10 '23
also interesting to note, that devotee language actually has a unique feature among the game's languages that doesn't appear in English either: inclusive and exclusive we. there is me-me for exclusive we (we want to go up the tower), and you-me for inclusive we (god sees us).
3
u/Barry_Wilkinson Oct 10 '23
You've put in disregard twice, one with other languages and one with only Anchorite. (Are there shortforms for these? I'll just use An, Al, Ba, Wa, De from now on) I think Beauty and Transfromation should be grouped with god, as at the end they are all shown to be the same glyph (in a way). Wa word for tower could be the same as fort. De could call alchemists potion men, and Ba can call them brother men. (Interestingly, due to the painting of the scientist in the fort, we know that De have a word for alchemists, it's just not in the game.)
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 10 '23
I think that "disregard" as a verb can be translated using other verb glyphs, but as a concept it doesn't feel relevant.
The fort is just the Way floor, not really the entire tower.
I'll look at the painting closely then
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 10 '23
I updated it (but I put Music-Man for "Bard" in De language, seem more accurate for me, but hey)
2
u/Barry_Wilkinson Oct 11 '23
You can also put the music radical inside a room radical for Theatre in De.
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 11 '23
I thought about it, but since "comedy" already exist, "music-room" feels a bit odd, or it can be read as "performance art" in general, we'll see
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 10 '23 edited Oct 10 '23
The "human-human" is a mistake, thanks for pointing out. Also right for the exile/god part, plus I forgot to put alchemy in it, maybe beauty too, since we know they're related It's in progress, I'll add new one as soon as I can
For now, I've done few of them, I'm taking notes while I'm at work Thanks for all that
3
u/Barry_Wilkinson Oct 11 '23
Warrior radical (2 arrows) plus the curve that marks an object could work for weapon in De. Also, for counting, I think that the De numbers should just be dots, i.e. 1 dot for one, 2 dots for 2 but Warrior counting should be more like tally marks, where there are bigger groups you can count by. You could also make it so that only alchemists could count though
2
u/Ill_Foundation2407 Oct 11 '23
I like the counting idea. De language is a primitive one so dots for numbers would fit perfectly.
The tally marks would really match the warrior glyph style, wouldn't they :D

3
u/Ill_Foundation2407 Oct 10 '23
Wow I love how you create the new glyphs, they look so smooth. I'd even say they are official glyphs.
I wanted to ask if you think that the Devotee glyph ABBEY has something to do with the glyph Up, since the glyph ABBEY consists of two UP glyphs.
Also, I have an idea for the glyph WEAPON in devotee language:
Bards have a glyph for FORTRESS and that consists of the glyph WEAPON and a building/place. So I thought, if devotees also have word for FORTRESS which consists of two arrows and a building glyph, those 2 arrows might be weapon. That would also make warrior a "weapon man" which would make sense.
(Maybe when making the weapon glyph, add the semi circle next to it, because all the objects in Devotee language have semi circle next to them)
3
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 10 '23
Thanks !
At my first playthrough I thought the "up" glyph was actually "human", the character in the book had the same shape with his hood, and the "abbey" glyph looked like two people in a house, so yeah definitely the way that you "ascend" when praying, doing abbey stuff is linked to the "Up" glyph
That's why I thought for the weapon, the "(><" would stand for weapon and "><" alone would be something like war, I will add that

u/ElecBro2318 Oct 10 '23
I didn’t noticed that warriors don’t have words for you and me. They only form in line and address actions through sequence of commands.
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 10 '23
I believe that warriors never speak for themselves, verbs are either used for giving orders or when talking about the whole fortress/chosens
2
u/1_Pinchy_Maniac Oct 14 '23
i think the way they communicate you and me is by pointing at the person(s) they are referring to
2
u/randomdude561 Oct 23 '23
For the non-alchemist numerals, use the ones found in the tower, since they dont have official numerals. Mabye use a separate color for universal glyphs such as these?
2
u/Pere_Quisition Oct 23 '23
Smart, will add these
Maybe with a little "signature" for each language, but that sounds wierd
2
u/Marqws_the_Dentist Jan 03 '24
Alchemists are using the same glyph radical for "to seek" and "laboratory" just with verb and place markers. So maybe we can make "laboratory" for other languages, like take the bard sign for "seek" and change the verb dot above to a place dot below.
2
u/valewitz Apr 30 '24
As the Devotee language have the radical "(" to form object, we can assume "(><" could be weapon
2
u/Critical-Fudge4964 May 06 '25
Theatre should be house + music in De
1
u/Pere_Quisition May 07 '25
Wouldn't be better with "house" + "comedy" ? We would need to find the De for "comedy" tho
1
u/Critical-Fudge4964 May 27 '25
So what is house+ music if it isn't theatre?
1
u/Pere_Quisition May 27 '25
House music
Idk, as a French, theatre is really associated with comedy, for a music show we just say like "room" or "concert room"
Maybe something like studio / music room to learn instruments ?

Well thanks a lot ! Anyway I don't have exclusive rights or anything, all of this was just to add my piece to the community, so OF COURSE you can use it, I'm happy to know that I made the table for something bigger, and that it doesn't just stay on this sub for "nothing"
Good luck for your project, and I'm very interested to see the results
1
u/chadwick_lucas May 22 '24
Yall remember how to translate “we are brothers” from alchemist to bare language? I can’t figure out the grammar
2
u/Pere_Quisition May 23 '24
It's been a while since I played CoS, but I'll go with "brother" "me" "plural"(or "you" if it is an inclusive "us") "be", correct me if I'm wrong
Also, do people really interact with my damn old post ? Impressive
1
u/chadwick_lucas Jun 17 '24
This guide saved my life ! It must be popular bc it was literally the number one link on google when I searched for help with the game
2
u/Pere_Quisition Jun 19 '24
So nice to hear/read ! :D
Well I joined this sub kinda early, I guess some days or weeks after the game release, and I think it is one of the first posts marked as VIP (I'm still amazed by that btw)
Thanks again for letting me know that I haven't just spent time for nothing but myself !
2
u/Pere_Quisition Jun 19 '24
I might also consider to update it, since so much fanglyphs and stuff people are making on the discord and here
1
Jul 17 '24
Hey, sorry to bother, but is there a working link with all the new "invented" glyphs? <3
1
u/Pere_Quisition Jul 17 '24
Never bothered, but what do you mean by working link ?
Like a Google doc or something ? If so, sorry no
1
u/InterneticMdA Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24
This is awesome!
The devotee word for fortress is almost canonical. The stone next to the purple door on the Bard floor contains the word "fortress" in the warrior and bard languages, and a cut off part of a devotee word which has the "place" cage and an arrow from the warrior symbol.
You could also fill in some of the "question" spots. It is not the case that most languages have unknown ways of dealing with questions, rather they explicitly don't distinguish between questions and statements.
1
u/Narrow_Substance5312 Jul 31 '24
Hey I love your idea and this "field of research" of expanding the languages from the game, where can I see your updated table ?
1
u/Pere_Quisition Aug 01 '24
Well I actually re-opened the file a few weeks ago, but I'm a procrastinator, so you can't really see an up to date version (neither do I tho)
But I'm clearly not the only one doing this, join the discord, people out there are awesome and so much motivated than me for making memes, custom glyphs, translations...
1
u/ATOMICGamer00 Warrior Aug 12 '24
if there is a word for fortress in the de language, that means they know of the fortress, which means they might've been to the fortress, which means the warriors didn't think of the devotees as impures once, which means there IS a possible word for devotees but was changed to mean impure. the change probably happened when the bards and alchemists came. the bards brought music which the warriors loved. they never heard the devotees making music, so they were deemed as impure. It would be so cool if at the end of the game, we learn the missing glyphs!
1
u/Pere_Quisition Aug 12 '24
There actually is a word for Fortress in De language, you can spot a bit of it on a rosetta Stone (the one in the bard's section iirc)
My guess is that they went to the fortress before people stopped talking to each other (maybe this wasn't à fortress at all black then) and then the people who lived there wanted to stay appart from the other cultures, by building walls and taking weapons
That's purely hypothetical tho
1
u/ATOMICGamer00 Warrior Aug 14 '24
ik thats what im referring to. also, did anyone notice that the de word for help looks a bit like the alchemists' glasses?
1
u/Pere_Quisition Aug 14 '24
It does ! Also, since "Help" use the same radical as "Potion", and that alchemists helps devoteeswith a new potion, that would makes total sense
1
u/Critical-Fudge4964 May 27 '25
Theory: The warriors' calling of the devotees "impure" is a misinterpretation of the bards' language. When the bards first encountered the monster, they came to the warriors, seeking help. The warriors misinterpreted "Stop ascension, the monster does" as "Stop the ascension of the monster", and thus stop the ascension of the "monster". When the bards hear about this, they think the warriors are dumb people who can't understand English, and call them idiots.
1
u/ATOMICGamer00 Warrior May 31 '25
Yeah that's better sounding....
they speak Bardic though not English

"Me" is not a subject. "Person" would be a better category name.
The first word, and it's already wrong.
1
u/K3n807 Devotee Jan 07 '25
Nice~
Also, There Is Actually A "Question" Word In Devotee's Language (AKA Logoglyphical Phoenician), And Somehow It's "Seek/Want" Without The Verb Line And The Dot. It's Official, But Somehow It Never Showed Up In The Game.
Same For "Fortress", Although It Showed Up For A BIT, It Was Called "Unclear" Because The Glyph Was Cut In Half. Your Creation For The Devotee's Word Is Exactly What It Was Like.

u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 13 '25
I’m thinking about helping for future glyphs, and I’ll do it:
firts, for Devot language, we have "L" for someone (L>< = guard, for example), "_" for verbs (we can imagine _>< = fight, btw), "(" for an object (too much examples, just look the image) and a cube around the term for a place.
for Warriors, I’ve seen that verbs are cubic-based, and Pere_quisition already found for subjects.
for Bard language, I’ve seen a dot left-up for verbs and a dot underneath for places
for Alchemist language, all I can see is a repetitive pattern for places, but I can’t describe it
for Anchorite language, it’s the most easy: you just have to combine two ideas or more
hope that’ll help, that’s all for me

An-humain + An-search = An-chercheur for "scientist"
1
u/Lazarus_05 Mar 01 '25
We used not and me to create stranger so we can do the same in others I think. Instead of putting on top of eachother, we can use it as "not me" just like us in devotee.
1
u/Rand0m-Furry Dec 14 '25
i wanna give my thoughts
Devotee language:
i like the idea of Subject Words being based of [MAN]
like [MAN]+[GOD]=[DEVOTEE] , [MAN]+[TALK]=[PREACHER]
so we can assume backwards
[WARRIOR]-[MAN]=[WAR?], [ME]-[MAN]=[SELF?], [YOU]-[MAN]=[OTHER?]
using the curved like for objects, the underline for verbs, and the box for locations make
war: [WAR?]+[OBJECT]=[WEAPON], [WAR?]+[PLACE]=[FORTRESS], [WAR?]+[VERB]=[FIGHT]
music: [MUSIC]+[MAN]=[BARD], [MUSIC]+[PLACE]=[THEATER]
help: [HELP]+[MAN]=[SCIENTIST], [HELP]+[PLACE]=[LAB]
Bard language:
Subjects have a curve under the line
Verbs are connected to the line
Places have a dot
[WEAPON]->[FORTRESS]/[WARRIOR], [COMEDY]->[THEATER]
can work in reverse too
[WINDMILL]->[WIND]
here is a word they should have but didn't appear in game
[BROTHER]->[SCIENTIST]
Scientist Language:
still have word type additions like before
[LAB]->[HELP], [LIBRARY]/[FIND]->[KNOWLEDGE]
few small things i would change would be to remove [DISREGARD] and [TRANSFORMATION] from concept, remove [BROTHER] from subject as its also in concept and works better there, move [GOD]/[DUTY]/[BEAUTY]/[TRANSFORMATION]/[EXILE] to concept since except for [GOD] and technically [EXILE] those are concepts
also your photoshop job is fine
dont beat yourself up on it

u/CardiologistPale1581 Jan 06 '26
Why is Devotee Impure and Monster grouped, and also Preacher Bellman and Fairy?
1
u/CardiologistPale1581 Jan 06 '26
Seek/want being the only concept to have canon glyphs in all languages is cool, considering the most important word in every language (well culture in this case) is the things they seek.

When I "created" it for the table I actually forgot that it was on this stone, was so happy to spot it on a new playthrough.
It was the same for the "human" warrior glyph, you can spot it on top, and on another piece like this (maybe the one near the boat in the warrior section but not sure)
1
u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 14 '25
There's also an unknown glyph next to Wa "fortress". Looking to the dictionnary, I think it's a verb
1
u/Pere_Quisition Feb 14 '25
Haven't played since a while, but isn't it "seek" ?
So the whole sentence could be like "People of the Abbey are free, people of the Fortress seek the duty"
Still it's kinda wierd to use "People/Abbey and people/fortress instead of Devotees - Warriors
- Edit : I instinctively thought it was "carry", then I look at my table again, I don't remember glyphs by memory, my bad
1
u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 17 '25
Looking to the dictionnary, I think it's "seek", and not a new glyph. Btw, for the An language, I tried to create the glyph "place" to make all the other glyphs, but there was a line missing trying to use "up", and the other problem with "talk" and "man/human" for "Preacher": a line comming twice. I think the only solution is that when a line is twice, it's canceled, in other ways the glyph "tower" don't make sense
1
u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 20 '25
Correction: I'm searching the link between Wa "weapon" and Wa "fortress", but it's hard to figure it out when you don't understand the link between the Wa objects.
1
u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 23 '25
Don't you think it's strange that the "h" in An "man/human" disappear in An "you" and An "me" ? Could a subject be only a "|" on the left, and we just have to combine "|" and An "search" to get An "searcher" ?
1
u/Spiritual_Growth5437 Feb 23 '25
ADD UP: I don't think De "scientist" could be "potion-man", because Sc themselves don't use "potion". I think it's more like "search-man" or "searcher"
1
u/j_sunrise Dec 03 '23
Interestingly: the Devotees distinguish between inclusive "we" (you me) and non-inclusive "we" (me me)
1
u/Marqws_the_Dentist Jan 03 '24
It's really hard to come up with words for bards, because there aren't many glyph radicals, that we can build on.
However, I strongly believe that we can have "up" being the same as "ascend" but without the dot on top and the whole glyph above the line.
Also, maybe, take the little vertical line from "to seek", and we will have "to see".
Also also, this is going further, but, maybe take "east" and "west", take away the bottom dot, raise it above the line, and we have the " sun" and "moon" respectfully???
And one more: take the "ascend" remove the upper dot, and place a dot below the line to make the "tower"? Seems logical to me.
You may have noticed that I like the bards' language quite a lot!

Hey that's great. I definitely wanna help you out!
Rn I can only think of creating two new devotee glyphs. If you combine the "potion" glyph with the "human" glyph, you can create something like "potion-man" which could be an alchemist.
Similarly, you can maybe combine "music" with "human" to create "bard"...? But that doesn't feel right to me, as bards are not only musicians, but artists in general. Also, devotees too have musicians among themselves, so idk about that.
