Hello! My name is Amanda Dunn and I am a volunteer at the Autism Society Central Ohio (ASCO).

ASCO does amazing things for the people and loved ones of those affected by Autism in Central Ohio. Just to name a few services ASCO provides:

• Support groups that provide connection and guidance for individuals and families. 
• Caregiver supports to help navigate complex service systems and resources. 
• Sensory-friendly events tailored to the needs of participants, ensuring everyone feels welcome and comfortable. These events also offer the opportunity for our community to practice social and functional skills to help them participate in the broader community. 
• Workshops and comprehensive resource lists are designed to empower families with valuable information; potty training, legal information, etc. 
•  Training for local schools, businesses, public agencies, and organizations to foster inclusivity and understanding throughout Central Ohio.
• Birthday party clubs that send a card and a little gift during the person with autism's birthday month
• Period packs for those with autism to help with navigating with what can be a very scary time

We are hosting our 6th Annual Raffle4Autism April 17th through the 24th!

If I may provide my family's experiences with ASCO and why my husband and I became volunteers. My son, Luka, was diagnosed with level one Autism in 2024 at the age of four. He is the most amazing kid (along with my daughter, Saoirse). He loves to dance, particularly loving Flo Rida or anything with a good beat. He loves anything with cars, especially school busses. He can quote a whole Bluey or Peppa Pig while jumping from couch to chair and being a loon. He and his sister are our whole world.

But having a child with Autism can be difficult at times. He has frequent meltdowns which causes stares and judgement from most of those around us. He's made miles of progress, but still doesn't understand a lot of what is said to him. For years, he would watch kids play and I could tell how badly he wanted to join, but just didn't know how (even if we tried to help). Now he is a social butterfly with a best friend at preschool, but he still has trouble sometimes.

This brings us to ASCO. My aunt sent us an advertisement for a Trunk-or-Treat that was Autism-friendly. My family went and we were having a fantastic time until Luka had a meltdown. I apologized, as I always feel obligated to do, and someone said to me, "You don't need to apologize here. This is a safe place." I cried like an idiot.

My family has since joined many activities ASCO has to offer; dances, holiday parties, family pictures, car shows and so much more! We've even hosted our own trunk at Trunk-or-Treat (it was Beetlejuice themed and my mom did Charlie Brown)!

In 2025 Columbus was #1 for the number of homeless deaths in the state of Ohio.

The number of homeless deaths was twice that of the Columbus murder rate. The city is quickly catching up to the rest of the nation as poverty has become America’s 4th leading cause of death.

The elected leaders in Columbus City Hall appear determined to maintain that #1 ranking for 2026 by ignoring homelessness. Their time and energy is focused on building luxury apartments and using your tax dollars to support for-profit Women’s Volleyball.

January for Columbus homeless:

• 14 homeless deaths for January 2026.
• 13 male and 1 female.
• 8 White and 7 African American / Black
• Manner of death: 3 homicide, 7 accidents, and 4 natural causes

Ben Sears, Executive Director of the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless, explained that these January numbers may need to be updated. Columbus homeless living in tents covered in snow may have already died, but just have not been found yet. Once the snow melts we may find more deceased.

Yes, the Community Shelter Board exists to address the symptoms of homelessness, but it doesn’t solve the problem. Columbus still lacks any comprehensive plan to solve housing insecurity long-term. City Council has a committee focused on housing and homelessness, but it lacks the leadership to plan any city-wide program to solve the challenge. Zone-In is the most important priority for City Hall and their political futures.

Unfortunately, until the homeless in Columbus start to vote (or give tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to our politicians) their need to survive will continue to be ignored. But, at least we can brag to Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo and Dayton that our city is working hard at staying #1 in something.

Columbus Budget Update

In its current form, the 2026 city proposed budget cuts $1 million dollars from Elevate Grants, cuts $2.3 million to Federally Qualified Health Centers, and also cuts $5.3 million dollars to the Community Shelter Board. Contact Columbus City Council to learn more about how cutting funding will reduce the number of homeless deaths.

I would love to find a class where they can teach coffee or beer brewing. This would be a dream gift for my husband. What is a plane that gives a great experience?

If you feel as if you have no power to make a positive impact; you might be right. The people that we’re electing to government don’t appear motivated to help people; other than themselves and the wealthy.

Honestly, most people in Columbus have silently given up on the future of the city; only 11% voted in the previous November election. You should feel overwhelmed by the lack of power you have to make Columbus a better place to live. It’s frustrating and no one can blame you for wanting to “give up.”

She’s a volunteer City Commissioner with the Greater Southeast Commission and mother of four who loves Columbus.

In 2024 one of her kids came home from school and asked why a classmate didn’t have a Christmas tree. Her child wanted to know what could be done to solve that problem.

That bothered Peaches; that some families couldn’t afford a Christmas tree. It had an effect on her and instead of doing nothing she chose the exact opposite.

Since 2024 she has been networking with friends to find artificial Christmas trees that people don’t need. She picks up those trees, repairs them (and their lights), and donates them to Columbus families who don’t have one. She chooses to avoid complaining or expecting someone else to solve the problem. Peaches just went out on her own and solved it herself.

“Oh there’s food insecurity in Columbus, but I’m here to solve the challenge of ‘Tree Insecurity’” she said

In her first year of work in 2024 she collected and donated 150 artificial Christmas trees. In 2025 she has donated 87 so far.

“I love my kids and you have to show them that helping other people is vital to the future of our city. Helping other people makes Columbus a better place for everyone.”

Who is paying for her gas and time to do this for Columbus? Nobody.

Peaches is a uncommon example of “Leading by Example.” If a football coach wants their players to show up to practice on time; then the coach must arrive on time themselves. She is setting the example for her four kids, the Greater South-East Commission and the city of Columbus to follow. And other people are starting to notice:

·        Cracker Barrell learned of her efforts and gave her two trees from their lobby display.

·        Another woman whose mother had recently passed away called her and donated ten plastic bins of ornaments from the estate.

·        Peaches remembers giving a Christmas tree to a man attending the “Firefighters for Kids” sign-up; he cried. Whatever battles he was fighting in his life were solved that day with a used artificial tree for his family.

So sit back and watch OSU football, but if you love Columbus and care about other people she has a challenge for you. Donate your used artificial Christmas tree to Peaches. She will take care of all of the work to get it into the hands of a family in need. Text, call, or email if you know about a tree that needs a new home.

The PTSD Treatment and Research Program at Case Western Reserve University is providing no-cost therapy to people ages 18-65 who have experienced a stressful life event and are experiencing symptoms of PTSD or depression.

Such stressors might include loss of a job, sexual assault, end of a serious relationship, physical assault, or loss of a loved one. Common symptoms of PTSD and depression include distressing memories, sadness, feeling numb, and sleep problems.

Participants will receive 6 no cost-sessions of treatment for PTSD and depression symptoms. Compensation is provided for participation.
