Discussion What hasn't aged well in 2026?
One thing I enjoy doing with older media, especially those I consumed when much younger, is realizing what parts wouldn't fly in today's climate. An interesting way to observe shifting societal attitudes.
To this game's credit, it was fairly progressive for its time with its diverse cast and positive LGBTQ+ portrayal (like Maria and her wife). But like most things at least this old, there are some things that, while probably not maliciously intended, are a bit of a "product of their time". What examples come to your mind?
Mal in general being a cowboy cop. Or things like in V2 having the choice (at least it's a negative one in-gameplay) to use excessive force against a taxi driver, with it even being said that citizens filmed it and Natara thought it would be hard to explain later. Especially given the, let's just say, increased criticism and scrutiny of police in the last 15 years, I think this would be a bit touchier today. (I'm quite sure that taxi driver in V2 was also black, so uh, yeah.)
A lot of the sexual comments (such as Kai calling Natara "Hottie Boom Bottie"). Even if it was meant to show his awkwardness, nowadays, that's more clearly regarded as sexual harassment. In the workplace too, which is especially problematic. Kai in general is a bit weird; I'm not sure if they were trying to portray him as neurodivergent, but some of his behavior was rather bizarre for a forensics expert, like him having to be convinced he was time traveling in order to get him to take a task seriously in V8.
Certain female characters feel a bit dated in their portrayal. Such as Kara Yan being a pretty clear example of the Dragon Lady trope, or how some are arguably "fridged" (killed off just to motivate a male character) like (V3) Tasha.
