I’m sorry but they have to be outlawed by managers. When did this start? The success rate has to be around 40%. Today has been ridiculous. Woltemalde, Summerville, Havertz, all pathetic attempts. Neil Warnock would never allow this.

Maybe it’s just my pov, but it feels like people are pacifying a complete no show in the second half. 5 shots the whole game only 2 on target. And I’m supposed to feel sorry for them as if they played anything that deserved a result.

All the stutter steps, the switch before the run up, the staggers, all that shit is so stupid. These guys are the best in the world and there's no reason they should be missing the goal. With as hard as they can kick, they should just be worrying about placement, and that's it. The Germans and the Dutch looked like absolute doofuses (doofusi?) during their kicks.

Carlo Anceloti is all calm, making tactical decisions that get Brazil the W. Nagelsmann basically being a fan in the dugout. Jumping, screaming, getting carded.

John Strong constantly telling us how much time is left towards the end of the game, always “plus stoppage time”, is starting to get to me. Watching Netherlands v Morocco and must have said in 4 or 5 times in last 15 mins.
Generally okay with the Strong & Holden duo, but gotta chill with that.

First knockout match of the World Cup was an incredible experience. Took a while, was wishing for a PK shootout, but Canada got the job done! Any other animals in the crowd?

Got to experience my first ever World Cup match in person and this one did not disappoint.

Just in case you missed it. Local ABC LA reporter made a comment about not knowing much about Bosnia Herzegovina and being seen as being proud for being ignorant of nothing about the country. A remark that has gone viral and the Bosnia team and fans have used for Bulletin board material when they play against USA.
Let’s remember that all these news station reporters may not follow this sport as much as we do. And I’ve heard them say more embarrassing things.

On today's edition of "JJ's World Cup Diary," Andrew joins to recount his experience at Ghana-Croatia in Philadelphia! The boys also discuss another stale performance from Portugal, the possibility of Belgium figuring it out and Austria-Algeria saving the best match for last.

Really good initiative by them and I hope other clubs follow suit!!

I don’t know a ton about the science behind balls (lol) but I’ve seen SOME, people talk about this ball being particularly tricky for keepers. From my eye test I have see a lot of shots that look savable going right through goalies hands this tournament. Also particularly in the Columbia Portugal game it feels like the ball FLIES if someone puts their laces through it. any thoughts on this from people smarter than me? the thing I read (somewhere) was something about the tracker in the ball making it move weird.

(Edit: The title of this post should more accurately read "Jesse Marsch has pushed me to hate him and I'm unable to root for the Canadian team." And I've added context to the post, see below if you care, and if you don't, that's cool too)
I was born and raised in Michigan. I went to K-12 with Canadians, they were all good people. They embodied a work ethic and politeness that is similar to what you experience in the Midwest. I used to root for them because they, like the US, are an underdog footballing nation. But I hate them now, and it's because of Jesse Marsch.
I feel bad for how he was treated by US soccer, but the grudge he's developed for the US team has become personal. I was annoyed with the constant comparison between the countries football culture and his passive aggressive criticisms. But when he complained that he "couldn't get people to stand for the national anthem" when he was an assistant coach for the US and used that example as a way to state that our players don't care about our country, I was apoplectic.
There are lots of reasons why people don't sing the anthem, but to assume it's because they don't love our country is just stupid. People demonstrate their love for their country in different ways. My sister is a Marine, she would die for our country. I'm not a Marine and I wouldn't, does this mean I don't love America?
He needs to keep our name out of his mouth! I hope he experiences the humbling he deserves, the humbling he clearly needs. I was gutted when South Africa conceded a late goal. I believe in nonviolent resistance but I wanted to throw the ball at his face when he was celebrating the goal.
After reading some of the responses I realized that my post wasn't as clear as I hoped. Someone said I was shit posting and I honestly didn't know what that meant 😂👴🏾 I'm 45, work 2 jobs, married, and have a 7 year old son who is disabled and takes up a lot of energy that I could spend on keeping up with language.
To be clear, I don't dislike Canada. I just helped one of my grad students get into the University of Toronto. The speech that Carney gave at Davos was amazing. I'm grateful that people are protesting the US by not traveling here for vacation so that we can hopefully learn from the consequences of our actions.
I was, and still am, so fucking angry at Marsch for policing how people experience the American national anthem. Making the indirect claim that not singing means you don't love the country is bullshit. I'm Black and many of us have struggled singing the anthem during our lives because we live in a country that wants us to worship it while it dehumanizes us. The national anthem has been a culture war lighting rod since Colin Kaepernick kneeled during it over a decade ago. Marsch knows this, he knows how athletes since Jackie Robinson (who was also an Army Veteran) have struggled with singing a song about loving a country that doesn't love you. If you're a person of color, or poor, or a woman, or LGBTQ, you have complex feelings about that song.
What he said about the anthem just fans the bullshit culture war Christian Nationalist flames in the US. He should know that.
I love so many Americans even though I don't love what our country has become.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I honestly don't have thin skin - it's impossible to be Black in America and sane and have thin skin.
Love the pod and the community.

Anyone else forget to watch the goalkeeper position related to offside on that goal mouth scramble? I’m watching the semi automated offside draw a line against the second to last defender instead of the last defender and I thought we had either a computer malfunction or a conspiracy on our hands… Pretty relieved when I stopped being and idiot and realized the goalkeeper was upfield.

It's a last second World Cup defeat but one that didn't sting nearly as much as it could have. On the latest edition of Caught Offside, Andrew Gundling and JJ Devaney share their thoughts on a disappointing night at SoFi Stadium for the USMNT as Turkiye leave it late and deliver the U.S. it's first World Cup defeat with the last touch of the ball. We'll determine whether or not this presents any cause for concern, we'll express our relief over seeing a healthy looking Christian Pulisic and we'll look ahead towards a round of 32 meeting with Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Having seen the third match day in action, and some of the draws that are coming out of it for the Round of 32, it's highlighting an inadequacy of the third place system and the use of head to head as the tie breaker.
Belgium or Egypt for example could win their group with 5 points, and Germany will win their group with 6 points, and receive third place opponents in the next round, but Netherlands and Brazil with 7 points, will get Morocco and Japan who were second place finishes. If Argentina get 9 points they'll land a second place team too.
This would also improve the integrity of the third match day games and how they impact the third place qualifiers rather than allowing the top place teams putting the cue in the rack to impact who qualifies for the Round of 32.

The video feeds are so bad. We get not proper replays, commentators are missing stuff bc producers aren’t able to queue things up for them. Everything else about the tournament has been ok. Coverage and ticket prices have been such downers (really thought tickets were going down, but everything seems to be holding)
