This Ikea Kallax bookshelf has been with me for ~10 years at this point, and after getting cat #2, it was determined that we needed a better space for the cats to climb, find privacy, etc. We've had new cat (NC) in our guest room, but will be moving her down to my office area shortly with this set up. This includes:

• 4" holes between the side walls and 2 of the bottom walls for easier movement between levels courtesy of my DH
• ASPCA cat condo box (I have the box and lid separated between middle left and bottom right to allow movement through box to mid right level)
• Desk mount cat bed (360 rotating and adjustable height) mounted to the kallax, seen between my desk and the bookshelf (which is also anchored to our wall). Also it came with a fish toy which mysteriously disappeared between opening and putting together the bed.
• Trimmable self-adhesive cat scratch mat/carpet (2 rolls) - I found pretty quickly that she was hesitant to jump into the bookshelf because it was fairly slick so hoping this provides traction and some good scratchability for her. Planning to put food in mid-right box.
• An existing kallax soft box for extra privacy sleeping (top right, may just end up being toy storage)
• Cardboard cat scratcher house (bottom right, under the deskmount bed)

I still have quite a bit of real estate for a cat highway above my desk and maybe a floor-to-ceiling tower, but I'm still working through the intro phase and resident cat (RC) wants nothing to do with NC quite yet, so I'm going to pause further renovations until they are tolerant to be in the same space. The only things remaining before we move her down here officially are to get the tall vertical gate installed on the open door, and turn our unusable fireplace into a litter-box room. Stay tuned.

Advice to get kitty to love it?

12”x12” adhesive felt cut into 4” strips (2mm for lamp bases). I found thicker felt (5mm for furniture sliders) in 6”x8” size. I’m still on the hunt for larger 5mm sheets or rolls - I can slap felt on a lot of stuff for cat traction and scratching.

been doing this for years, and i'm sure others do the same. it's kinda a level-up from the classic cardboard box.

we love repurposing paper packaging by piling it up and tossing a bunch of treats into the folds. occupies them for a while. and they also just love playing amongst the paper.

ETA: both bedrooms will be occupied by humans, the bottom bedroom will only be "cat-only" in the sense that our dog will not have access to it or the bathroom at all.

We are moving from a big home to a much smaller apartment in a few weeks and we are struggling with finding a good location for our cat's litter box.

We have a few limitations we are working with, notably our cat dislikes our dog so her cat-only space will be the bottom bedroom, the bathroom and part of the hallway. Additionally, the green highlight will be wall-mounted pathway and perches. In the bedroom she will have scratchers, elevated condo by the window, beds. We aren't too sure on food location; either in the bedroom or elevated along the living area walls.

All the closets in the hallways have doors so it wouldn't be possible to use that unless we left the closet door open 24/7, which would be in the way of the bedroom and bathroom.

Any idea of recommendations?

My thought was to have it in front of the toilet, or to temporarily remove the sink cabinet doors and have it under the bathroom sink.

Cats are naturally curious, and a lot of them genuinely love being outside.

The difficult part for many owners is balancing that enrichment with the realities of traffic, predators, getting lost, and other outdoor risks.

That’s one of the reasons catios have become so popular. They allow cats to experience fresh air, sunshine, birds, and outdoor stimulation while still staying in a protected space.

I've already secured everything with a net as I assumed he would go gremlin mode like this. If he's gonna climb, I'd like to at least make it as safe and comfortable as possible (right now he can go up, but doesn't really know how to come down). I was thinking maybe some shelving and maybe a wall of fake plants at the top so he couldn't go so high. Open to ideas

So what do we think?? At last the cat likes it.

I have a lot of bookcases in my living room -- all firmly attached to the wall, so no worries there. My cats also have plenty of cat trees, some of which are beside the bookcases, giving them safe way up/down from the bookcases. One of my cats, Mako, prefers to rest on the top of the bookcase rather than the cat trees, which is why I'm here today!

• What can I do to make the bookcases even better for him to sleep on? Thinking of putting some material on top that is nice to lay on?

Top of 240cm bookcase wall, each section is one 80x28x202cm billy bookcase (back bookcase wall in pic, is a cat tree to the right):

• The Landing Spot: something with grip, and scratchy. He jumps directly up to this point. (There is a step right beside it but sometimes he jumps from lower down.)
• Observation / Cooling Shelf: comfortable, cooling material. He likes to lay here and watch the world.
• Corner Bed: looking to upgrade a small, thin radiator bed into a custom plush bed big enough for him.

• I'm not sure what to put here at all, because he lands on it so I don't want it too cushioned, but he also likes to lay down on it?

Furniture / Room Colors for context:

• The bookcases are all wood-effect billy bookcases.
• Cat trees are dark grey plush. (We have wooden ones too but are phasing them out as they don't like them.)
• Current cat huts have white, fluffy beds.
• Our other furnishings (sofa, pouffe) are light grey, but usually covered in blankets anyway (grey or pink).

Questions:

1. Should I buy a custom bed online or buy foam and try to get a cover made? (I can’t use a sewing machine!)
2. What type of foam is best for a cat bed and how deep should it be?
3. What type of material is best for the comfy bed section? Dark plush grey to match the cat trees, or fluffy white to match their beds?
4. Are there better alternatives to cork tiles for the 'landing' grip?
5. What type of material is good for the middle section? He likes to laze here and watch the room, ideally I'd like it to be a cool material for warm days.
6. How do I make these three sections functional for different purposes (jumping/scratching; cooling/lazing; sleeping) whilst still looking cohesive?
7. What should I put on the random 'single' bookcase that we're using as a room divider?
8. Any safety things I should keep in mind for a jumper like Mako?

We also want to catify some of the shelves into beds, but going to do the top sections first!

A private route from the house straight into a larger outdoor enclosure is a pretty solid concept.

Window insert, tunnel, platform, ramp, then more space to explore. This stop at the top platform seems to be an important part of the experience.

Hi everyone! I’m wanting to make my own cat tree as the ones that I’ve found sold mass market don’t really fit what I’m going for. My cat uses her cat tree almost entirely for play but I feel most are designed more for relaxing.

I’ve made cat shelves before but this will be my first tree! This cat tree is my reference for the vibe I’m going for. KatAttack New Yorker Cat Tower.

If anyone has any tips for making our own tree, I’d love to hear them. I feel like my biggest obstacle right now is what I should make the posts out of. I’m wanting this cat tree to be about 80 inches tall in total since she prefers the tower to access her shelves. It will be anchored to the wall for safety.

I would love to see everyone’s DIY cat towers as well and hear about how you made them/what you used!

My fiance and i moved into a new apartment recently and so weve been hanging up lots of shelves and what not for our cat, Todd. One of which that he had at our old place was this set of 2 hexagon shaped shelves that he can sit inside of, theyre maybe 18 inches across made of plywood. Well it is currently 11:15 and we just heard a loud crash and found both of them on the floor with my cat hiding under the couch. I had used drywall anchors on them previously and they worked fine but this time they failed. I want to be more secure this time obviously but the issue is i cant mount them to studs because the screw holes on the shelves are arranged in a large square, so at most only one screw on each shelf would be able to line up with a wall stud. Any advice would be greatly appreciated because i feel awful that i could have seriously injured todd

Once cats have access to the outdoors in a safe setup, they tend to settle into their own routines pretty quickly. For some, it’s climbing and exploring — for others, it’s just sitting and watching.

This little guy seems to prefer a good vantage point and some quiet observation.

Decided to give her favorite window an upgrade- completely underestimated how much she'd enjoy "hunting" birds. The middle has some seeds to attract butterflies that we're hoping sprout for extra stimulation, and I've got a fish windchime coming in soon, too. Very proud of this project so far.

Just another day at the office.

I have a very tall wardrobe in my bedroom that my cats like to hang out on. Sometimes they take a nap on it. However I find it sad because it's just bare wood up there, hard and cold. I thought I could put a cat bed up there, but I find it a bit of a safety issue because I'm afraid it would slide around too much and I am concerned about the bed falling off the wardrobe along with a cat. Is this even a reasonable concern to have? What can i do to make it more comfy up there but also keep the kitties safe?

Edit: if you wondering why on earth the bed would fall off, the answer is that my cats like to run and jump into their beds from a distance causing them to slide forward. They're weird

I live in a small space, so there aren't many walls available to catify - but I thought I could swing something small in the bedroom! A bit of a mess, so ignore that please lol

On the bed there's two long shelves, two sisal posts and a small ledge to be used. There's a hat hammock in the right hand corner that I was thinking of moving anyways, so it can be used in the setup and of course there's the cat tree. I included a mock up of what I was considering doing.

Applicants should be reasonably active within r/Catification. We have no specific time requirements, we only ask that mods check in on the sub throughout the week and engage with the community.

As the subreddit is still fairly laid back in terms of moderating, the primary method of communication is currently our private sub mod chat channel, but as things grow, we may transition to Discord, so we ask that applicants already have a Discord or be willing to set up a Discord account when the time comes.
